Okay we'll admit, we came very close to typing '2023' in that headline. But no, your eyes aren't deceiving you — it's time to pass judgment on a whole new year of monthly PS Plus games! And to get us started, January's lineup is made up of three intriguing PS5 and PS4 titles.
The headline act has to be the highly rated A Plague Tale: Requiem, while we'd recommend Evil West to anyone who's on the market for an especially pulpy excursion. Add Nobody Saves the World to the mix, with its quirky action RPG elements, and you've got a decent amount of variety for the first month of 2024.
But as always, we want to know what you think of the newly announced PS Plus Essential selection. Vote in our poll, and then explain your stance in the comments section below.
Are you happy with your PS Plus Essential games for January 2024? (6,038 votes)
- Yes, very happy
- Yeah, mostly happy
- Meh, they're okay
- Nah, they could be better
- No, it's a crap selection
- I don't have PS Plus
Which January 2024 PS Plus Essential game are you most looking forward to? (5,012 votes)
- A Plague Tale: Requiem
- Evil West
- Nobody Saves the World
- None of them, to be honest
- I don't have PS Plus

I havnt seem plague tale requiem below £25 yet so yes good month
Fab line up and start to the year - delighted about the second plague tale game but also looking forward to a bit of a blast with evil west. 😀😀😃
One of the best month ever
I’m happy with them, aside from the fact that I purchased Evil West one day before these games were announced. No biggie, I don’t mind supporting Flying Wild Hogs! They are a talented studio and I would like to see what’s next for them.
My country gets a game called Lost Epic instead of Evil West. I wanted to try Evil West so that’s a little disappointing, but really happy with the other two
@Kyushutrail lost epic is superb. If you like metroidvanias this is one of the best in the genre and it has a really nice art design too. Evil west is a good laugh but lost epic will last you for a long time. Even better month for you 👍
@Northern_munkey Good to know! Thanks!
Already have Nobody Saves the World, which is a fun game. Super pumped for Plague Tale though, had been waiting for a deep discount.
I really do recommend that people play A Plague Tale: Requiem. Some of the set pieces are crazy.
I’m looking forward to playing Evil West. Me and my brother have been waiting for a price drop because it looks like a good co-op game.
Looking at the result of the poll, it really does feel like people judge the quality of PS+ based on if there’s a cinematic 3rd person action adventure game in the lineup.
Im extremely happy.i say this is one of the best months ever for ps plus essential.im very happy im especially going to play the excellent evil west.word up son
Really thrilled, especially about A Plague Tale. I’ve had it on my wishlist since release. Just kept waiting for a steep sale and some time on my schedule to open up.
I'm neither happy nor unhappy, Ive never heard of any of them before so no instant excitement, however happy to give them a try
Playing all 3. Excellent month.
Really couldn’t care less for Plague but I wanted to give Evil West a go, glad I waited.
Cheers.
@Deoxyr1bose Exactly
Looking forward to Plague Tale 2 & Evil West a lot, but perfectly happy to try the other game too. They’ll both make a nice change after BG3
Yeah, I'd been hoping for Requiem on either Essential or Extra for a while. At least they're starting off the year on the right note.
@Deoxyr1bose The much more logical conclusion would be that people judge the quality of PS+ on the quality of the games on offer. Usually the simplest explanation is the right one.
Best month in while. I've had Plague Tell and Nobody Saves in my wish-list for a longtime. Many times recently I've almost bought them. Can't wait to pick them up for "free" now. Evil West looks okay not something I would buy but it's included so I'll give it a go.
Banger month. Plague Tale obviously the big news but Don’t sleep on Nobody Saves the World, it’s made by the Guacamelee devs and it’s fantastic.
One of the best months ever!!! Amazing lineup!!
Got Plague tale requiem on disk in the black Friday sale for like £13. So will be selling that in Jan.
This is a great line up. Personally, Evil West looks like some solid PS3 era fun. I already played Requiem on GP, but happy to own it, its a great game. I have Nobody on switch and will probably stick to playing portable.
Plague Tale and Evil West aren't really my total style but I know they're both quality and I have been somewhat interested in Nobody Saves the World so not the craziest month for me personally, but I am willing to check these out
First time to say Very Happy!
I think Requiem is still one of the best looking games this gen. Cracking game.
@Ainu20 Last month had Sable and PowerWash simulator, both very quality games but in niche genres, and people hated that month
My requirements for a good month of Plus Essential:
So, very good month for me. Especially looking forward to Evil West. The epitome of a PS3-era 6/10 game that I’ll love like an 8/10 game. Perfect for PS+ because I’d be waiting a long time for it to go down to price I’d be willing to pay for that kind of game.
It's rare that I'm interested in all 3 games for the month, and I haven't bought any of them, so I think this is a great month for Plus games. I enjoyed the first Plague Tale game but I hope they've toned down the violence against animals in this sequel.
@NinjaNicky out of curiosity what 3 games would you choose if you had the choice
@Deoxyr1bose Fair enough, the reaction to last month was not warranted. I suspect people were setting unrealistic expectations for the last month of the year.
On another note, I struggle to call Sable a quality title on Playstation. It's by far the worst performing game I've played on the PS5 so far, despite its modest visuals (from a technical point of view). For me personally, it was a potentially brilliant game so utterly ruined by its framerate that I actually had to drop it. I appreciate that it was made by a very small team, but the fact that they haven't bothered to fix this is unacceptable in my opinion.
I totally get people who own these games not being happy about this month but I don’t know what you would expect to be better. If every month was like this I would expect most people would be happy.
Started plague tale awhile back, but wasn't in the mood for the stealthy game to finish it at the time. Does anyone know if you need to play the first to enjoy the second?
Already bought Plagues Tale Requiem and am currently playing. But not disappointed one bit, and stoked for everyone who gets it at a tremendous value.
@Elodin its heavily story-driven and continues from the first. The controls aren’t all that difficult so warming up on the first isn’t all that necessary. You could watch a summary on YouTube. It can be pretty intense though so you won’t get that experience or relate as strongly to what the characters have already been through, which has been very traumatic. So if you want to fully experience how the gameplay synergizes with the feelings the story evokes then playing the first is definitely worthwhile.
Plague Tale is surprisingly the game that I care the least about from this list! Evil West and Nobody Saves... in that order, I've been keen to play, but never had the time or funds to try. Generally prefer to play with friends, and they're both coop, as I understand, so my mate and I are in for a good month of gaming!
@Deoxyr1bose I think they were just a little too niche? I mean, I like niche, but there's no way I want to sit down and play a game about washing dirty things; I've done that for a job already. That said, apparently a lot of people love it, so I guess it's not that niche, and is quite divisive. Actually, I like a strong 3rd person action adventure game. So this is a way better month for me!
Bought evil West a month ago and really enjoyed it but happy with the other 2 so decent start to the year
Really good month although I've already played both Plague Tales and am unlikely to get around to the other two games.
@Deoxyr1bose I rated last month a bit lower at the time but have had a good time with Sable and am currently addicted to Power Wash Simulator. Both months are wins imo.
I’m not into stealth games cos they wind me up. But I played the trial of Requiem and for me it actually set a benchmark for ps5 graphics. Jesus does that world look alive and inviting!
It’s a really solid month. But it just sucks that I bought & platinum’ed it recently. Can’t win them all they say!
I'm surprised at how many people pay for ps+ essential here.
Then again, maybe not everyone is being honest.
@kcarnes9051 thank you. I think I will go back and start the first again.
I was forced to let my PS+ subscription lapse as it seems they will never give the knack 2 fans their just deserts.
I honestly cant remember a month that was better than this for a long time.
I've read a lot of the comments. You must ALL be new to PS plus. A PLAGUES TALE has been free for plus members in the past. So basically they are recycling a headliner game sony already gave plus members free in the past. Anytime sony wants to recycle content and pretend or ignore the fact it was free already as a PS+ title is obviously a poor choice. Where is God of War ragnarok, marvel midnight suns, sonic frontiers, or elden ring?? Eldin ring has DLC coming soon so maybe build hype on that and give the 2022 game of the year out for free. Midnight suns has LOTS of DLC so the main game free with potential DLC sales is also a good choice. Sony could do better, they have surprised me with good months before! But this month the indie nobody saves the world is probably the diamond in the rough.
Good month, but I let my sub lapse after the price hike.
Does anyone play these games anymore?
The games are brilliant. Only issue for me is I bought plague tale on PSN in January 2023 and beat Evil West just before I bought plague tale. As I traded Evil West in I'd give that another play through and I'll definitely try Nobody saves the world
@Yeayeah No, they are different games - Plague Tale 1 was given away on ps plus previously, this month is Plague Tale 2. They have never repeated ps plus games that I’m aware of.
Great month for me, been keeping an eye out for Plagues Tail, got the plat on the 1st and really enjoyed it.
Evil West is a great game, some real punchy weapons and good old B Movie dialogue, good fun all round, it reminds me of Shadow of the Damned on PS3!!!
A Plague Tale: Requiem is very similar to the first title but with better graphics. Looking forward to playing Evil West I hope its good. Well done Sony some AA games which is actually what people want from PS Plus.
A month where I'll download and try all of them! Most interested in Nobody.
@Yeayeah I guess we're not so new to PS Plus that we can't even tell the difference between A Plague Tale: Innocence and A Plague Tale: Requiem. Oopsie!
Also, you going on about God of War: Ragnarok, Elden Ring and Midnight Suns tells me you don't even know what tiers we're talking about here.
I had to vote Very Happy since I plan on claiming all 3 of the games, which is a rare thing for me. 19% saying Crap Selection either already own the games or just come in here every month and vote that.
I hope the gameplay is a bit lest clunky than the first one but for gamepass I'm happy to try it. Evil West is one I'm going to try to but don't have high expectations.
After many years of being a plus member I let the sub lapse. The price is way too high and I only paid for cloud saves anyway.
I'm happy for everyone, but of course I didn't renew because icouldn't find a better PS Plus deal .......and I've wanted all three games 🤦
It’s a great selection for single platform owners and a bit weak if you’re multiplat. I played Nobody what must be a year or two ago on Xbox. Plague Tale is great but I played that on GamePass on release. Evil West is mid at best.
We need some JRPG love!
Like last month, three games I don't own, probably wasn't going to play, but might be motivated to try now, so sounds good enough to me.
Not a great month for me — two games I haven't heard of, and one that I can't play as I can't justify the high cost of buying a PS5.
Everyone on PushSquare seems to be happy as long as it's a third person action game with modern day graphics. You lunatics were happy with Gotham Knights. I don't understand
An absolutely super month! A Plague Tale justifies Plus for me for a good 3 months or so, really delighted
Wow very nice. Both plague tale and evil west are on my wishlist. I hope they fixed the performance issues of plague tale though. Heard it wasnt great at launch
