A successor to Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 in all but name... Did you ever truly believe that this day would come? It's a great time to be a Dragon Ball fan, because Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero is a roaring return to that classic arena fighter formula, where an absolutely massive character roster is the main selling point.
It helps, of course, that the game itself is damn good fun. We awarded it a 'great' 8/10 in our Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero PS5 review, bigging up its punchy combat system despite initial frustrations. "It's just about as bombastic as arena fighters get, and while the game could do a much better job of teaching players the ropes, there's a technical depth to combat that makes the learning curve feel incredibly rewarding," we wrote.
But are you playing Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero? Vote in our polls, and then feed us some peak Dragon Ball nostalgia in the comments section below.

I don't know if I played any of the Budokai Tenkaichi, but I still have a couple of the older Budokai games for PS2. I really enjoyed these, but goodness, how many times can you possibly retread the same story beats? This game does look cool, but it'll be one I watch on Twitch.
Where is the poll option for "No, because my next quarter of gaming will be consumed my Metaphor instead."? 🤣
I wonder if it’s any better than FighterZ 🤔
@guardianoftime They're two different things. It's like comparing Dynasty Warriors to DMC - not that I'm saying either game is the same as those two, just that FighterZ is a traditional fighting game and Sparking/Budokai Tenkaichi is like a DBZ sim.
@IntrepidWombat "how many times can you possibly retread the same story beats"
The story isn't really the focus, to be fair. They just always have a story mode because people expect it, and the story is already established. This isn't aimed at you, just a general observation, but it's funny how Zelda, Pokémon and Mario never get accused of this despite being original stories that could do anything and aren't being based on a pre-existing story in another medium. Like if every FF was about trying to stop Sephiroth summoning Meteor.
I'm tempted to get it but I bought Metaphor and don't like the idea of spending another 80 quid. Maybe next month though. Tons of games out this month.
Absolutely I'm playing it, the game is everything I wanted and more. I haven't had this much fun with a Dragon Ball game since probably Budokai 3 & Tenkaichi 3!
I played a little of one of the Budokai games way back, but I don't know, I just never liked how they played. I think if you have a history of playing "traditional" fighting games it can sometimes be hard to get into games like these.
I actually had a lot of fun with Super Dragon Ball Z back on the PS2. I know it was not all that popular compared to Budokai. It was much less flashy but it controlled like a Street Fighter game and was made by an SF2 designer.
No, i don't have any plan to play Sparking and i probably never play it.
And i think i played a bit of Budokai Tenkaichi 1 on PS2 but i also played the "predecessor" Super Butoden 1-3 on SNES, Buyu Retsuden on Sega Genesis, and GT Final Bout on PS1. Heck, i played the turn based RPG (forgot the title) on NES eons ago.
I enjoyed Dragon Ball; from reading / collecting the 42 volume manga, gacha cards, action figures, played the games, watched the movies etc. But i'm just done with the series. I salute anyone who still follow and enjoyed the series though.
Best Buy messed up my order, no clue when the game is actually coming. Guess I’ll be playing metaphor this weekend.
I've played all the BT games but I have never really enjoyed them much compared to the original Budokai games. Budokai 3 is probably my second most favorite dragonball game with FighterZ being first. Man I wish we got another Burst Limit game though, that was the one game that got me wanting an XBOX 360 a long time ago.
I will bit probably on a deep sale since on couch coop you can apparently only use one stage, which is BS
I’m on holidays, but my copy is waiting for me at home. My friends can’t wait for me to come home for us to start playing this gem.
This could have been a day one for me, but based on the reviews, and as mentioned in a previous post, the Local Multiplayer/Split-Screen being only available in one map is a huge letdown for me considering that Local Multiplayer is the only reason I would buy this one.
There is a mod for that already in PC, but this is better in a console I think. If they add a patch for it down the line while it is on sale then count me in. Until then sorry but no.
DBFZ is the only DBZ game i’ll play
Shocked at all the nos
Been playing since early access began, but I'm still so bad at it. Having a blast though lol
Yeah played abit ..lowered difficulty for vegeta ape fight to beat it lol...might have do some training to learn more of the stuff as opposed to mostly mashing buttons
Really liking it so far. It lands the Dragon Ball feel perfectly and it’s such a thick title for content. I’ve not yet even touched the Metaphor demo or Silent Hill yet because I’ve been stuck on Sparking Zero. All in all, it’s one of my favorite games this year, even if I am terrible at it.
Just got home with a copy so im a little late but I'm excited to play. I spent a ton of hours in BT3 as a kid, so this should be a nostalgic but also fresh experienc
To me this is mainly a game where you try to figure out how to stop being blasted around backwards. I swear to Kami-sama, I spend most of my time being combo'd around like a volleyball. I was pretty good at the previous BT.games but now I always feel like I'm Yamcha fighting a Saibaman.
@Matroska I trash talk Zelda about its story and one sided conversations with Zelda from Link not talking. How am I supposed to care about their relationship if Link has as much personality as a brick wall? Nintendo games seem to get away with way too much and aren't scrutinized as much as they should be many times.
@PuppetMaster you didn't play DBZ Hyper Dimension on the SNES? The best Z fighting game. It even had a solid online community through emulation.
why no review of the Diablo expansion?
@JohntheRaptor As far as i remember, i never played Hyper Dimension. Back then, when comes to Dragon Ball, me and my friends only played Super Butoden, Buyu Retsuden, and that turn based RPG.
Wasn't able to get Sparking Zero as yet but I cant wait to play it! It looks exactly like what I was hoping for.
Later down the line, and loved the PS2 Budokai Tenkaichi series
I played Tenkaichi 3 religiously when I was a kid. I think nostalgia and just pure love for DBZ make this a favourite game of mine now.
I have one gripe with it and that's the online. It's hard not to find a match that is'nt someone using UI goku. Plus side is it feels great when you beat them using Yamcha.
Hell yeah and I'm so happy to say it's good I do have some issues it's not perfect the story mode is pretty awful with it's slideshow presentation and given the games that this is a sequel to it's soundtrack is woefully underwhelming Sparking Neo and Meteor had legendary OSTs I hope we get a classic Sparking OST pack at some point. Also there could be a few more stages some classics like the Glacier area and Kami's lookout are noticeable omissions also that cool Frieza's spaceship stage from Meteor. Again overall very happy with the game it feels good to have a Dragon Ball game I really like again it's been over 10 yearsðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ (FighterZ whilst good just wasn't my thing)
