If you've been following Baldur's Gate 3 since its original announcement — and you had somehow always planned on a PlayStation release — then this day has been a long time coming. Larian Studios' celebrated RPG is out now on PS5, bringing one of the highest rated games... well, pretty much ever, to Sony's current-gen console. And as always, we want to know if you're playing it.
You've seen the reviews. The title sits at a frankly mind-blowing 97 on Metacritic (96 on PC), and we ourselves awarded it an incredibly rare, 'outstanding' 10/10 in our Baldur's Gate 3 PS5 review. "Baldur's Gate 3 is the new reigning RPG monarch, demanding your homage with its insane level of depth and detail. Even if its gameplay might move too slowly for some, it's hard not to be astounded by the sheer scope of this adventure. An epic in the true sense of the word, Larian's latest is a game that can utterly consume your life for days, weeks, months, even years, should you embrace its brilliance," we concluded. You can't ask for much more than that!
But again, will you be playing this landmark RPG? Vote in our polls, and then gush about your character's deeds in the comments section below.

Wavering over purchasing, just not sure if I have enough time at the moment to invest in it properly.
I think I'll leave it for Christmas as it looks perfect to play on the PlayStation Portal.
I'm also over 120hrs into the platinum grind for Everspace 2 so in need of some short games for a while too.
BG3 is my first Baldur’s gate but I did play Divinity 2
Been playing early access once I realized those evil geniuses did the offer on Labor Day Weekend and I'm in love 😍 At first it comes across as just a really good CRPG game but once you get used to the mechanics, the world truly is your oyster. I already have alternate builds and playthroughs going through my head. Absolutely my GOTY (Unless Dragons Dogma 2 comes out this year, can't remember 😂)
If it gets a physical edition i’ll buy it
I'm waiting for a sale. Not because I don't think it's worth it. There has just been a ridiculous amount of good games this year.
Is it weird to change your mind on playing a game in the brief seconds between voting and typing a comment?
Too much Red Bull today I think.
I never played a Baldur's Gate game before. I may pick it up on PC when it's on sale in the future. Looks like a fun game but I don't have the time nowadays to sink into a game this size.
@Anke I can’t stop playing it but it is making me miss the Portal I don’t have yet, if that makes sense. It’s fantastic.
Bought it the moment early access came out on PC. I love the old games and the Forgotten Realms. BG2 is my cozy game, where I play it every year during xmas holidays. BG3 quickly became on of my favorite games of all time.
I didn't buy the PS5 version but may double-dib if a physical version is ever released.
i didnt like divinity original sin so i don't think this is for me
This is probably one I play on PC somewhere down the line when its in the under $10 bin. Way too many other games right now for me to pick up this one at full price when I tried hard and failed to get into the first 2 games.
@Marquez it wasn't until the Portal popped into my head that I realised this would be great as a pick-up-and-play game between all the others.
Glad you think so too and glad you're enjoying it, I'm looking forward to it at Christmas now.
This game is a miracle and 100% must-play for all RPG fans and lovers. Forget about other games (for a while at least) and give Larian's new masterpiece a try even you don't like cRPGs / turn-based combat / D&D / previous games. Years have passed since I've experienced this strange and magical feeling of enjoying something digital so much.
Haven't started yet, waiting to jump into a co-op campaign with my friend. I've never played a BG game before but she has, and we played Original Sin 1 and 2 in co-op.
For me I have so many games I don't have the time I will get it but it's digital only so there is no hurry for me.
@Anke A game all about decision making with turn based combat is the sweet spot for Portal for sure.
Not fan of turn-based games so no (just my opinion don’t cancel me lol)
I'll likely get BG3 once I've completed Sea of Stars.
Will dip into it next year when it goes on sale. CRPGs and most fantasy games I've tried haven't really been my thing. So I'll give it a try when the risk is far lower.
I'll get the chance to try it with a friend who wants to do coop so I'm not picking it up, at least not yet. At a glance it really doesn't look up my alley but perhaps it will change my mind when I try it.
Plus I still need need to start Trails into Reverie and by the time I finish that Persona 3 will be out so I'm pretty booked on RPGs at the moment. 😅
I preordered the digital deluxe but haven’t had a chance to start it yet.
Would have if not for Starfield releasing the same day....want to play both and I know if I start playing both at the same time ...I won't be able to appreciate both games properly...will buy it though eventually
Its painful, but I'm going to await the inevitable physical release. I would've preordered day 1 if there had been a physical release
Been very tempted especially after reading the reviews!I'm just unsure of its my kind of game.
Hoping it gets a Trial on Plus.
I'm not sure this is a game for me, but I want to give it a try, so il be waiting 6-12months and picking it up in a sale. Hope everyone enjoys it
Just finished FF16 and am downloading this as we speak. I want to play Starfield, but I think I’ll wait as I’m an enormous fan of Larian Studios and there will be some fun mods down the road for Bethesda’s big game. Tough choice… but I’m ready to get sucked into Baldur’s Gate 3 the next while
Not yet.but i will definitely will buy Baldur's gate 3.my backlog of games is huge.larian studio games are amazing.so i will definitely supported them.word up son
@Hobbesyall yeah same, I’ll be skipping this one unless they release a physical version
Waiting for sale. To see what the fuss is about. I don't like the style if combat, but for 15 bucks, I'll give it another go.
amazing stats for Larian showing that niche games, if well done, can draw an audience outside of hardcore.
the majority of players have never played a game in the series but the word of mouth is too strong to avoid it!
Oh yeah! Baldurs gate on PS2! Those where the days. Rent from the video store and play all night with a friend. What a time for gaming that was
Why do this game look and run better than Starfield lol. IF I was Sony I will probably try to buy theses guy.
I'll probably buy it at some point in the near future (very interested), just too many games already on my plate to justify a full price purchase right now.
Ironically can’t play BG3 tonight as I’m playing irl D&D, but I’m super excited for tomorrow! Downloading now.
Game is more expensive for some reason (93 +tax canadian for standard version) and there is no physical copy of the game. I just don't like spending that kind of money on digital games, so I decided to pass on it and wait for a sale.
I'll wait for a physical copy or significant sale before buying it
@Futureshark same here. It looks great but it looks like a title that’ll take over my life for a while… not ready for the atm haha
I've been enjoying the game, but it is so overwhelming. They really don't explain anything and they assume you know D&D combat already
@StylesT that’s what happened to me. I started Starfield early access but once BG 3 early access unlocked for me I haven’t been back. I already wasn’t feeling Starfield which is frankly outdated In unbelievable ways but after playing BG 3 it feels a generation behind
I'd be playing it now if there was a physical edition. I absolutely refuse to buy a full price digital copy, though. Once it hits $20 maybe I'll consider it.
Digital only needs to die.
@ztpayne7 Same.
I'm probably not going to buy the game if I didn't like Divinity 2 so much, let alone the Deluxe version. I think Larian Studios really deserve all the support.
I’m very excited to play Baldur’s Gate III someday, but I have too many other games I want to play first (such as finally getting around to playing Baldur’s Gate I & II!)
No but based on the overwhelming positive responses for this BG3, I'm glad that a full-priced game is actually delivering
The poll doesn't have a "I won't buy it unless there is a physical version" ...
I have both previous games, but never played them...
No disc no buy.
I have had it since the weekend as I bought the deluxe version and I am loving it, haven't been able to devote a huge amount of time to it but had a good couple of hours tonight.
Looking forward to a quiet weekend to get a decent run at it.
I have a feeling it's going to be one of those games that leaves me feeling like nothing can match it for a while afterwards. Much like when I completed The Witcher 3, took a while for anything to hit the spot after that.
Heard it's great but not into to turn based RPG combat
Too many games to play. I’ll buy next summer when I’m on summer break from teaching. Looks amazing though!
Had starfield pre ordered, cancelled it and bought baldur’s gate 3 instead.
Nope, still bad game from 1st for me.
Normally, a game with this much praise would be a no brainer, but some of the things I’ve been hearing and seeing from this game have really been turning me away from it. As a result, if I do play it, it won’t be for some time, and probably not till a deep sale, which is a shame, but *shrugs * it is what it is.
I'm kind of interested in this game, but I still don't fully understand what exactly is this game, all I know from some reviews it's an RPG that has a great story telling, but what's confusing me, is it a turn based, tactical RPG, semi-Realtime RPG, or something else.
I’ve been playing divinity original sin 2 to see whether this is something I would enjoy but I’m too undecided to pay full price. I’ve put about 25 hours into divinity and still don’t really know what I’m doing or how anything works.
Trying to get my head around 4 different characters and what to level them up and equip them with is pretty overwhelming.
I will almost certainly buy BG3 but am most likely going to wait for a sale. Unless I bite the bullet on the Portal in which case I’ll get it then. Seems like a perfect game for handheld.
Can't stand turn-based combat so have absolutely NO interest in this. If you can't build a game with real-time combat in this day and age, something is wrong. Its has to be the lightest/easiest way to do combat - hence games like Pokemon could run on a Gameboy.
Each to their own of course, but I would rather play games with 'real time' combat. I don't care about the 'story' if the game-play is dull/boring/tedious (as I find turn-based Combat) - Why I never had interest in Marvel Sons of Midnight either.
Turn based games just never clicked with me. From Final Fantasy 6 to Chrono Trigger to Pokemon to Ni No Kuni to Mario Vs Rabbids ... I want to love them but I just dont find the concept of WAITING AND LETTING enemies attack you very compelling. Only one ive really cared for is Steamworld Heist which I adored. Looking at the Baldur's Gate 3 screenshots/trailers really turns me off. I know I wouldnt enjoy it and it looks overwhelming and probably impenetrable for someone like me.
@ExtremeBlue90 A real time rpg, that you can pause, with strategic, turn-based, combat.
It starts quite simply, although can be a bit overwhelming, as you need to know or read up on how DnD works (like which characters or classes can use what weapons effectively, etc.), but once you get a few levels into it, it just feels really fun to play and explore!
@J2theEzzo Hi, thank u for taking the time to reply, I'm considering getting this game after the "Games Tsunami" coming in these few months, your words are very helpful.
@Hobbesyall Same here. There's a Japanese physical version coming out soon but I'm wondering if it'll be censored. Hopefully they release a GOTY physical edition over here (if you can wait that long!?!).
I'm on a D&D podcast and have re-created the character I play as, in the game. If you loved Divinity: Original Sin 1&2, then you will love this even more. It's more of the same but so much more and with the D&D license of Baulders Gate, elevates it even more. GOTY for me and I've only put a few hours in.
Waiting for the inevitable slew of bug fixes first.
@BAMozzy What a weird take. It’s not that they couldn’t/didn’t want to build a game with real time combat it’s because it’s based on the real life rules of D&D which is a turn based game. Making it real time combat would be like building a game based on Monopoly and then everyone just takes their turn whenever they want. Also to assume anything about the Baldurs Gate combat lacks complexity really shows a gross misunderstanding of what this game is all about.
Turn based combat is interesting because it forces you to think and make strategic decisions but it’s so much more than that in this game because of the interactions between the characters and environment. It’s honestly hard to describe why it’s so special but it really is the closest anyone has got to a true RPG. Fair enough if these type of games aren’t for you but if you assume anything turn based is automatically boring and is a design choice due to a lack of talent from the dev team you are missing out on plenty of gems. Not everything has to fit the mould of “continuously press R2 to punch/swing sword/fire gun” to be a good game.
Waiting for a physical version too. I only really buy digital if it's deeply discounted. It's a game that really appeals to me, but I'm going down with the physical ship.
Would consider getting it if there’s a physical release sometime. Otherwise I’ll just wait for PS+. Won’t be buying digital that’s for sure
@GeeEssEff Not at all - I don't play D&D or really enjoy 'board' games as to me they are games to play when totally 'bored'. I hate the 'random' nature of TBC - the fact that its like D&D and the 'randomness' of a dice throw bugs the hell out of me. Its NOT tactical or strategic to go for a Hit or Block move only for some randomness to say you 'failed'. It becomes more 'luck' than any 'strategy/skill'.
To me, Real Time Combat has more 'skill' and 'Strategy'. You aren't waiting for your turn to 'react', not leaving it to chance to parry/block attacks, have to rely on Strategy/skill to not only attack but also avoid in-coming attacks in 'real-time'. Its not like Conkers or board games, its much more immersive than that. I wouldn't stand there and 'wait' whilst I'm being attacked until its my 'turn'.
It was originally a way to bring some form of 'combat' to massive RPG's when resources were extremely limited and used a 'board' game format to achieve that - doesn't mean to say that they 'need' to do that today - therefore its now a 'design' choice when before they had 'no' choice - call it a 'legacy' mechanic. Of course that doesn't mean that BG3 for example should have updated their Combat, and may well have 'chosen' to do that - either because its what 'fans' expect or because 'they' prefer to do combat the 'easier' way - but that doesn't change the fact that I find it incredibly tedious, boring, immersion-breaking and unnecessary for a 'modern' game on 'modern' hardware.
If you enjoy it, that's your personal choice too but doesn't mean I have to like it or feel the same way. I hate the mechanic and it 'spoils' games for ME. I will NEVER waste money on game-play elements I can't stand and find incredibly tedious.
I buy it once there is a psvr2 mode
il start this once ive finished starfield
@BAMozzy yeh I wasn’t disagreeing with your opinion, you’re very well entitled to it (although not sure how you can have an informed opinion on something you haven’t played). I was disagreeing with your suggestion that making the game turn based is some sort of cop out “in this day and age” and suggesting there is even a comparison to be made between Baldurs Gate 3 and the 90s Pokemon games. Believe me there is nothing easy about the development of these games nor the playing of them. You clearly just see the term “turn based” and assume that they haven’t evolved in the last 20 years.
Opinion about a genre is one thing. Suggesting the developers of a game you have never played took the easy route is another. Play it, don’t play it, it doesn’t matter but if you don’t play these type of games I don’t know how you can know exactly how much skill is involved or how hard they are to develop. I have no interest in Historical RTS and have never played them. I can say that I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t like Rome Total War but I wouldn’t dream of suggesting those games are any simpler or more complex then anything else until I’ve tried it.
Still on the fence to be honest.
All the videos I've watched have helped encourage my interest, but the question remains...
Do I wanna take a £57 non-refundable punt on a genre I've never been overly keen on and may still not get into?
Don't really care about the cost so much, as bought many a coffee coaster over the last 40+ years of gaming, but as purchase decisions go for me, this is a toughy.
If ya have bought it, I hope its as good as you hope so far..
I'm just gonna carry on sitting here and getting a few more splinters!
I'm not a huge fan of turn based games. But I think I recall liking Divinty original sin. Is that the one!? So I'll give this a go at some point. Playing Diablo at the mo which is taking up all my time. But so many others to try too!
I didnt as I imagined playing Starfield for months.
But Starfield makes me ill and nauseous (im afraid Im not the only one), so despite how much I enjoyed what I played, Im not going to be able to play that again without significant changes.
So once Im able to look at a screen again, which might take till the weekend, Im going to buy this and enjoy gaming without the nausea!
Maybe I'll go back to Sea of stars and get the platinum.... theres a game that makes me smile 😀
No, not at all. Have watched a few hours of streams and can say for sure it's definitely not my type of game. I'm glad so many are enjoying it though!
Still absolutely loving Starfield but I can't wait to absolutely love Baldur's Gate 3 after it.
Nah I tried DOS2 and I don't have anywhere near the amount of time and patience to even begin a game of this style.
Busy playing Starfield tight now, then Cyberpunk expansion, then FFXVI final 3rd of the story, and then I'll buy Baldur's Gate, but ONLY if it gets a physical release. Really not fond of digital only titles...
Nope, why buy full price now when the game still have many bugs (the last patch fix about 1000+ bugs I heard) rather than later when the game is discounted and their bugs fixed? I still have a lot of games that I can play, like elden ring, many switch games, and many classic console games with my analogue pocket.
I have it on PC.
But waiting to finish Armored Core and StarField to really dive in.
It is hard to keep up with all the great games on my PS5/PC list. A really great "problem" to have.
Not interested in this one at all. The gameplay videos look so boring and I'd never get used to the high camera angle. Playing Starfield for the coming months anyway, so I won't have time for other games.
I am now really interested to try it out. But from what I heard it consumes your life and is kind of long, which is not bad, but just recently having beaten TOTK and P5R , I am now getting into shorter games at least for some time, like Metroid Dread, Humanity, Uncharted Lost Legacy and Miles Morales. Maybe this will be my next 'long' game when I have the energy and time to invest again.
Every year i am fooled by hype and buy a day one major game. And every time, the game is either buggy or has some major improvement & content just a couple month later. I swear, EVERY TIME.
Not gonna happen this time. I will let it mature.
Picked it, up. And started a. Couch Co op campaign with my. Partner Believe the hype it's amazing. Split screen ran fine and seamless for the 4-5 hrs we were shocked had gone by.
Takes a couple hrs of trial and error and reading the explanations that pop when you hover over anything in the menu, and then your off and you realize It's Not nearly as intimidating in terms of complexity as it may seem. The controller translation actually works quite well.
I Love it but know That you have to be open to turn based crpg party mgmt/ tactical battles.
If you were OK with it in something like dragon age, dragons dogma, pillars or divinity, you will be fine. Even if you could still love Witcher if it were turned based, you are already a step ahead, because that's absolutely the crpg type of inventory menu. Don't get intimidated by the dice rolls. They are literally nothing more than skill checks that you would see in older bgs rpgs implemented through bonuses to your probability of meeting a number (the skill check) via a dice roll that is buffed based on your stats.
Yet if you can't get immersed in those style of games, it's likely just not your thing and that's cool too. That being said, make no mistake, this is a great game that oozes passion for the source material and respect for gamers and gaming in general, in every aspect of its design.
I’m playing it. I’m a couple hours in, and genuinely enjoying it, but at the moment it is OVERWHELMING! I’m going to stick with it, as I’m sure I’ll get used to the systems, but I REALLY wish some of the things were explained a lot better. Low key hoping they’ll release a patch with better tutorials.
@ExtremeBlue90 You're welcome! It's worth just maybe reading up on (or watching some videos) to get an explanation of how armour class and advantage works- essentially, the higher an enemies defence, the higher your respective stat needs to be to hit them!
It's been a good last few months for games though, for sure! Enjoy!
As Starfield for me has become 'the vomit inducer' Ive now purchased this.
Unbeknown to me I had several reward points on ps that I could trade in for £30 credit, so the game cost me £27, total bargain!
Maybe this game can take away the dissapointment I have not being able to play starfield....
Huge fan of RPGs and turn based, but I saw someone playing it and it doesn't interest me in the slightest. In order for me to even consider getting it, I'll purchase it once it's 20 dollars or below.
i bought it and started it but then i bought Starfield yesterday and i'm really hooked on that already. I'm going to read some beginner's guides or tutorials so i know a little more and restart it later this year when i'm done w starfield
@Diowine Man well done on finishing both. I do plan on finishing zelda. Persona 5 is another story. I got to the ship dream world and just had enough
actually waiting for a disc release
@Reptilio don't worry happened to me too. TOTK was a blast from start to finish.
P5R on the other hand is an amazing game too, but everything after the Casino felt eternal. Most relationships were already maxed out and Palaces just felt more of the same.
I know it is not clever to criticize such a popular game, which again I really liked in general, but the last couple of months felt like a chore. That's why I need shorter to the point games before the next big one.
I feel bad for the 21% people in the poll.
Not yet, but will at some point most likely.
Bought it on Steam a few years ago (early access) and had it as preorder on the PS5. Play it where ever my 75 y/o back feels comfortable that day
I've been playing since early access on PS5 and have nearly 50 hours under my belt in Act 1. The game is everything I've ever wanted from a CRPG. I loved Dragons Age Origins but we're put off by the sequels. I've dipped in for Disco Elysium because it was doing something completely different but this has me sold so will definitely be going back to the Divinity Series and during the hype I tried Wastelands 3 as it was on sale for £10 and I'm back in love with the genre.
Larian are one of the few developers out there that deserve a day one purchase. Most don't especially for £70. They're showing constant support even past release and a willingness to listen to what fans want. In the nearly 50 hours of play I have there has only been one glitch when an enemy clipped through a wall. Other than that the game is extremely polished.
For people nervous about later Act 3 performance Digital Foundry has already released their video about it and I'm hoping it gets patched by the time I get there but at this rate it's going to take me a while so will have to wait and see as I'm not rushing through this one.
