Forspoken is here, and it's safe to say that the game has divided opinion up until this point. Back when it was first announced, the Square Enix action RPG was billed as a PS5 showpiece, but initial reviews have been all over the spectrum. It's difficult to tell just how commercially successful Forspoken will end up being.
We've played a good chunk of the game so far (our full review will be coming soon), and while the title's certainly flawed, we can see that it has potential in places.
But that's enough about what we think — we want to know if you've snagged a copy of Forspoken. So as always, vote in our polls, and then explain your decision in the comments section below.

"How well do you think Forspoken will sell?"
Even if it would somehow manage to sell well Square Enix would still say "It sold below expectations"
Had it pre-ordered. Liked the demo and I’m liking the full game so far.
I lost interest in it after a while, and I'd rather put that $70 towards Hogwarts or Like a Dragon: Ishin.
As for how well I think it will sell, I think it will sell alright. But as @mariomaster96 aptly stated, Square Enix will still label it a commercial disappointment.
This has psplus extra written all over it
I’ve brought it but haven’t played it yet. Busy playing the excellent Yakuza 6. I should have that wrapped up before the weekend, so I’ll be playing forspoken then.
Still waiting for my review copy
I got the game today and enjoying it so far, its got its flaws but definitely not as near as bad as some of the reviews I've seen. A solid 7.5 from me so far, loving the isekai genre right now. Only negatives are the constant chatter and the combat configuration, but other than that it's not a bad game and looks great.
$15 game at best.
Despite what I have read, I will likely buy it once its on a decent physical sale. The cringy sit-com humor that some reviewers have criticized is actually right down my alley, if I'm in the right mood. But given the performance issues, I'll likely wait until there are a ton of patches and for a Black Friday sale.
As for how it will sell... I think it will be a disaster and will push Sqaure-Enix in some sort of emergency mode. I want to see who they blame now, they can no longer claim it's the fault of poor performance by western studios they will then sell off, or of a third party (Platinum) doing a poor job. This is all in-house, by the FF15 team.
@mariomaster96 LOL, Push should send this survey with different options to their Square PR handler:
"How well do you think Forespoken will sell?"
@UltimateOtaku91 I think I can no longer trust your taste in games, lol.
Aside from the fact that the demo was disappointing, and many reviews point to a mediocre title, the full game costs 80 Euros in Europe, for the basic edition! Yeah, they can keep it!
I'll think about buying it when it reaches 10-15 Euros at the most.
@NEStalgia Hey if it's a JRPG you can bet il be playing it 😜 good or not. I've seen valkyrie elysium and babylons fall through til the end, this is nothing in comparison.
I'll be surprised if it surpasses 1 million copies.
It's definitely not going to become a household name.
@UltimateOtaku91 @Bentleyma
Will echo these comments.
I had it pre-ordered and I've been playing it all day. It's a shame the internet made it's mind up about this one last year based on a few incomplete cutscenes from the first hour of the game. It's a legit riot to play through.
Narratively it's nothing we haven't seen before, and compared to the writing and dialogue from SIE titles over the past 10+ years it will of course fall short.
Still, it has charm and it's pulled me in.
7/10 from me. It's nothing special, but it's damn fun to play.
I'll sit it alongside Valkyrie Elysium on my shelf.
For me, the writing was on the wall with this one. This title's commercial failure will have a major impact on Square and as a result I suspect we'll be hearing big news from them in the not too distant future. Just my prediction..
@Bentleyma me too. Enjoying it very much. Its a good Story and the Action is good too.
@mariomaster96 I knew I wouldn't be the first to say that 😂
It may be something I pick up one day in a sale but even if it had reviewed well its not the type of game that excites me
I don’t see how this doesn’t end in disaster. Publishers/developers biggest fear should be the dreaded social dogpile and that’s all I’ve seen for the past 24 hours.
The best they can hope for is the discourse dies down and people forget about it so the game can find an audience at some point.
Nooooope. Watch a bit of other people playing it and will probably laugh a lot. So it's worth them having made it 😅
If it's on PS Plus I will play it when highly intoxicated though 😁
I just watched digital foundry's review and it seems like a disaster. To be fair, on the technical side. Not sure about story since I managed to stay spoilers free for the most part, but technically speaking it just looks the way I thought it will look. Flat and reminiscing of PS3 era type of games.
Betting it all on Dead Space
I'm waiting for the mother of all price drops which at this rate should be in about 2-3 months. I can't wait to get my hands on Dead Space though, I think it will be the first great game of the year 🤞
It will sell poorly. Which by Square-Enix's numbers will be a disaster and they will have to focus even more on NFTs /s
No. I’ll wait for a hefty sale
Really hate mentioning backlog all the time but it really needs to be said. There is over the next few months some super must have games putting the never ending backlog even further behind. With Dead Space remake and Powerwash Simulator at the end of January it was highly unlikely I'm going to purchase Forspoken too. So on release Forspoken had to super impress to stand any chance of a purchase but it has completely failed to impress on nearly all reviews. I do think Forspoken looks a million times better than Babylons Fall tho
@themightyant I'm not sure you need the /s at the end there!
Forspoken is a wait for a sale game.too many good games coming soon.and my backlog of games is a lot.and having fun with my backlog of games.and theres always a sale on psn to buy games and dlcs.word up son
@KaijuKaiser " I actually prefer it over FFXV so far. "
Wow....if you prefer this to XV, and you're optimistic about XVI....I'm now even MORE worried about XVI!
@UltimateOtaku91 gagging sounds... I sat through the Super Mario Bros live action film twice. But even I have standards....
I kind of have to grin at @toypop comment of "copium", I can't help but feel there's a lot of people that think it's good because they wanted really hard for it to be good. Like High on Life but without the rick & morty audience built in. Though you just have bad taste apparently
I'd ask if it's wildly better than the demo suggested, but, you liked the demo, too, which....I don't think I've experienced a worse 30 minutes of gameplay, ever. Even High on Life pulled me in more than this and it has at least as many f-bombs.
Not sure what the total investment/costs to produce the game are. But how does the developer make any money out of this, if it sells poor.
Don’t they like go bust or close down.
Once it comes to PS+ I'll gladly play it, but I'm absolutely not paying money for that game haha
If you buy this at anywhere above 30% of full price you are crazy. Game costs nearly double that of what Elden Ring cost on Steam at release. ***** that.
I didn't end up buying it since I guess it really never grabbed my attention. Plus, I know I'm gonna be busy with other new games coming out.
@ShogunRok Sadly true
Yeah, I bought it but for PC. I was going to buy it for PS5 if the PC port turned out to be garbage. But to my surprise the demo was actually stutter free (yes, really). With that said, you still need a beast of a rig to enjoy 4K60FPS RT/Ultra…
Dead Space, Ishin, Atomic Heart and Hogwarts Legacy seem like better bets over the next month (and that's without factoring Resi 4 Remake in March!), and personally, my pre orders for those four games were locked in a long time ago. Though I predict if Atomic Heart misses it's mark even slightly, that could very well end up a worst game of the year contender in the eyes of many and completely overshadow the reception Forspoken has got. Forspoken though was an absolute avoid since it was unveiled as Project Athia, and for me was a rare example of a game that looked progressively worse with each successive trailer it got. Never been interested in Forspoken in the slightest.
I’m an outlier: I have no idea what Forspoken is and I haven’t bothered looking up what kind of game it even is or what it is (I see in this article though it’s from Squenix and is an action RPG.)
I just started seeing the name pop up like 2-3 weeks ago and I come to this site multiple times daily. I have no connection or reference to it so as of now I have no plans to buy it.
God no. £60 for this cringefest. 🤣
I'll definitely consider this when it dips below $20 on a sale. Mute the voices, turn my brain off, run around and blast stuff.
Sony cancelled my preorder when it was delayed and I'm glad they did. It looks awful.
My $70 will be going towards Dead Space this Friday and I got the day off, can’t wait to dive into space horror over the weekend
@KaijuKaiser I know, but YOU are optimistic, and if you like forspoken more than the good but rough xv I'm concerned by what you'd think a good xvi is
It came out the same month as a new Fire Emblem and I didn't enjoy the demo much at all so the chances of me picking it up were pretty much nonexistent.
Still. Happy to see some folks seem to at least kind of like it.
@Shepherd_Tallon And I’ll echo yours. I preordered it as part of a shameful year end splurge and have enjoyed what little I’ve played of it so far. And since I don’t do physical games, I’ll put it next to my copy of Valkyrie Elysium on the shelf in my mind.
I’ve had it preordered for ages. It’s installed and ready to be played
@Shepherd_Tallon You do you man but I'm definitely not gonna sit through "I JUZT DID DAT?" dialogue for more than 10 hours. Literally had to turn off the dialogue volume in the menu for the demo cause of how bad it was.
I will eventually but I don't like doing open world games back to back I need a break and I waiting for HP first.
You’ll know if it doesn’t sell well depending how early it goes on sale. It doesn’t look “bad” but certainly isn’t worth $70.
Think Iam waiting for a possible sell. Although Im a bit temped to buy it now.
@Shepherd_Tallon @JudgeDredd I’ve got to play it first, but I think you’re right. It’ll probably appeal to certain gamers whereas the majority of people bash it. I know someone who’s a hardcore fan of Days Gone, and doesn’t understand how others don’t see anything in it. For me, it’s a 7/10. In the demo, Forspoken reminded me of Sonic Frontiers mixed with FFXV, and that’s sort of what I was hoping it’d be like. For me, FFXV is a 10/10, despite having objectively big flaws. Man, did people bash that game though! For me though, it hit that right spot in a lot of ways. I’m sort of expecting Forspoken to hit me in a similar way, but I don’t know if I’ll like it or not. I’m excited to find out though. I’m glad I’m not the only one here that’s on the hate train. It was sort of brave of Square to make a big budget game like this as their first big PS5 game too.
I had it pre-ordered but then cancelled it. Tried the demo a second time after the update and I just wasn't feeling the game. Seemed too high of a price for something I wasn't feeling and I need to cut down on my spending. Don't have the time for it anyway after buying a new Switch game and have a few PS5s to play before Hogwarts Legacy
If you have to keep reminding yourself that a game is actually not cross-gen then I think you best not buy the game. I only realised today that the game is PS5-only
No purchase here. The multiple delays were a concern, thankfully they released the demo and that didn't feel great to play. Now the reviews by players on this site are confirming how bad it is.
Perhaps they should have taken another 6 months instead of rushing it to beat Hogwarts, I can't remember which final release date was confirmed first after both experienced delays but given time and money this was never going to win me over an established, solid and frankly more interesting IP that has had an excellent game showcase to boot.
@somnambulance "For me, FFXV is a 10/10, despite having objectively big flaws. "
0w0
What kind of review is that, Forbes? "Objectively big flaws - 10/10!!1"
Also it doesn't take much bravery to make a big budget PS5 game with a team that doesn't have a project in an engine that's basically dead, when Sony's paying you a 2 year exclusivity contract to do it.
I've decided I'm going to hold out for the Game of the Year Edition 🙏
Nope. If it comes to Extra eventually I'll give it a go, but I wouldn't spend money on it.
Not a chance, Spongebob is out next week!
Played for a few hours. So far it’s like a solid B movie in form of a game, that’s enough for me. But yeah not exactly worth the price.
So far this year, I’ve already bought two games full priced albeit one of them being Persona 4 Golden. I haven’t even started One Piece Odyssey yet despite a Day 1 purchase and loving its demo. I don’t have the time nor money for it currently. It’ll eventually be on PS+ so I’ll be patient. I hope everyone who bought it enjoys and finds something they love about it. For me, P4G has stolen my heart right now.
Have fun Forspoken players!
had it pre-ordered, but will be swapping it for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor when it comes out. Played the first one so the second should be great!
I pre-ordered it awhile back; the teasers intrigued me. After all of the reviews and analysis though I don't expect it to win any awards or be on any top ten lists; but I suspect that its more enjoyable than the click bait headlines make it out to be.
Does it use the hardware well yes. Is it fast, fun and got a better intro for another world/isekai story than most anime that are cheap and quick to do that and be like an Alice/Narnia yes. Is the combat fun. Yes. Is the story intro part for the New York/beginning of Athia a bit long but still enjoyable yes.
I have wanted another game of this sort for years. Sunset Overdrive, Darksiders 2, Gravity Rush. Spiderman/Infamous this could also be like if you wanted to but the earlier 3 are my favourites and I hate open worlds. I've wanted an open world complex combat, run around like crazy game for years but any AA like game I like always happens to not appeal to people and while that's fine it does get annoying to see when it does happen. XD
I just can sense when people won't like it, critics want oldschool games that are 8bit but modernised with Indies or Souls games and otherwise cinematic Sony games also are casual appealing so whatever they can have tons of awards on the box for people that can't tell whats good or not or what the term RPG means they can happily pick the game up. At least that's the vibe I get I'm just rambling thoughts that's all.
Forspoken is not perfect but it's still the only game this year besides Bayonetta Origins that I actually cared about I couldn't care less about most this year.
I mean what I do usually is 'try' to find maybe 1-3 games that are modern gen and most from retro eras I find more than that every time because I barely find anything I want to play that's modern anymore really. I mean I played Grid Legends (GT7 will never purchase, it's direction isn't for me), Bayonetta 3 and Kao 2022 last year, a weird combination of games but that's all I had interest in. Same with prior years I'm lucky if I find more than 3, 5 even 1 game I care about that's modern at all. I mean I enjoyed Balan it was my Rayman 3 successor no matter the state I had fun like Tank Tank Tank with 1 button and how it ended up I'm fair with games regardless I didn't care who made it like most people. I didn't care for the Chao like Garden that much.
Starfield maybe just to see how some AAA procedural generation of planets are because we haven't gotten any planet scale coolness of AAA in a while (but I care for the tech I don't play Bethesda games really, I'm not picking the game up though just looking/watching someone else play it) since Haven Call of the King or Star Wars Battlefront 3 being cancelled and reworked into Elite Squadron and No Mans Sky is awesome but Indie, maybe Triple i, Triple A Indie? I guess kind of Shovel Knight like big but, eh who cares there good games regardless as the quality shows.
Some Veterans like Nightingale kind of I guess (ex Bioware devs making a survival game because why not, can't not have that planned Mass Effect Andromeda procedural generation attempt they maybe wanted to do and finally make a game they want to then follow EA and have issues making the game and why not approach a genre that has potential that most critics don't give any care for but has a large audience willing to accept their cool ideas).
I played the demo and it was pretty bad. Felt very unpolished, I think this will tank.
Uh did I just buy forspoken with my credit card?!
Did that just happen?!
No, getting neptune and SpongeBob though.
@NEStalgia Lol. FFXV is like reviewing a U2 album, essentially. It’s a U2/10. If you like what it does, it’s absolutely perfect for that. You just need to focus on what you like about it and… sort of ignore the fluff. It’s a subjective 10/10. A very subjective 10/10. I can’t be objective about the game. Perhaps it’s a 7/10 that feels like a 10/10 to me. It’s certainly a game I like more than a couple other games I’d rate a 10/10. I liked it just a little bit more than the Witcher 3, for instance, which is an objective 10/10.
Dead Space on Friday! Oh yeah!!
What? This is about Forspoken? Oh sorry……
Dead Space on Friday! Oh yeah!!
Well, I'm playing it now and I'm enjoying it, as it is usual these days, it does need some updates as any brand new game and it'll be brilliant. I'm playing it in ray tracing mode and 120Hz display mode which makes the game shine, of course, haters care more about other things as "fun combat", 120 fps, etc., but I haven't read comments with regards of the quality of visuals, perhaps they haven't got a 120Hz capable telly, and I'm taking about PS5 exclusively, mind you, I don't care about PC or similar.
And with regards the $70 price tag, do you live in 2002?, most of AAA are around 60-80 and you don't have to wait 2 years for a price drop, Midnight suns was on sale, Callisto protocol is on sale... just wait 1 month or so and they will be on sale. Gotham knights was also on sale, all recent games. I also pre-ordered Hogwarts Legacy but because of the special DLC one PS5 but Jedi is on $70 and perhaps in 1 or 3 months on the $50, after some updates and ironing. At the end of the day, if you do not like it, do not play it... I hate Fortnite, COD and any Battle Royale sort of game, so I do not play it or buy it... life is easy.
I was never interested since i first saw it.
I did not like FFXV very much. I knew something else from that team would likely not be to my liking. I would go so far as to say "I hold the button for: not-buy". 😆
@cassiel that’s a long wall of coping you got there
@nomither6 Of course you didn't, can you cope? I'm fine.
I got it. Only £40 odd and it's fairly short so I'll get pretty much all the money back when selling
I’ll probably pick it up when it’s on sale at some point (or play it if it ends upon PS+) since it seems very much like a 7/10 kind of game (both from what I’ve seen/heard, and from the demo), but with so much other stuff coming out this year, I don’t think I can really justify getting it at full price.
No interest at all after playing the demo. I just ran from one point to another without doing anything else whatsoever, fought two extremely easy bosses, and it was over.
I feel like your enjoyment of the game will mostly depend upon how much you wind up liking the protagonist.
I'm due to get my rental copy today so I at least get to give it ago. Games that I have an interest in, I make sure to not look at gameplay etc, I make my own conclusions and if it hits, it hits. If not then oh well I'll just send it back.
@kyleforrester87
Hah!
got a chuckle out of me
I don’t think there is room this calendar year for missing the mark, and this game missed it by quite the margin. When potentially great titles are essentially rolling out every couple of weeks, there is no room for mediocrity.
Just look at the next 2 months. Deadspace, Hogwarts, Wild Hearts, Like a Dragon, Atomic Heart, Horizon DLC, Destiny: Lightfall, Jedi: Survivor, RE4.
No way I’ll be playing it. Not now, near or distant future. I’ll have forgotten about it by fall.
I don't see what the big deal is. I remember being excited for Biomutant but when I saw more of it and when it released, I realized I wouldn't enjoy it, so I didn't buy it. Same goes for Forspoken as well. Tried the demo, didn't like it. I don't understand why this game gets so much press. Surely everybody knows late review-codes is a huge red flag. Also, competition is really stiff this quarter with lots of excellent games being released on both PS5 and Switch. Maybe Xbox as well, we will know by tomorrow.
Yes, and I am quite enjoying it. I feel the hate for it is way overblown.
Reviews came out and I decided to either wait for a deep sale or use trade-in credit to not pay a dime.
Using some Amazon credit, I ended up pulling the trigger on it for around $25 US. Hoping it's worth at least that much. I'll know tonight.
@somnambulance
This is how I felt about Ghostwire: Tokyo. I know in my brain that the game was a 7/10, but my heart made it 10/10. Other games like this for me are Watchdogs: Legion, AC: Oddysey, Days Gone, Ni No Kuni 2, FarCry 6, and the list goes on.
I just may pick Forspoken up after all. I did not hate the Demo, in fact, I kind of enjoyed it. I feel that this is your typical internet pile-on. Sure the game may be weak and definitely not a game GOTY contender but there are people out there genuinely enjoying it. Sometimes dislike for something becomes so infectious and "cool" that everyone just tries to turn the Hate into Likes.
On the other hand, why do I feel I need to defend this game anyway. It's just a AA game that is not "Like a Dragon: Ishin"
I find it weird that when there is a game people hate without playing reviews really well, in the public mind, all the review sites are paid off (ie: The Last of Us PT 2). Then when another game gets bad reviews we trust them again.
@grapetrap Hey, you never know, it could be a GoTY tier title for someone. Lol. I didn’t get a chance to play Forspoken yet, but I’m not making an opinion til I play it. Pokémon Violet and Sonic Frontiers were above HFW and GoW: Ragnarok last year for me, and I know that’s not a trendy opinion. Lol. I think a lot of times people forget that gaming is absolutely subjective. Elden Ring was my GotY last year, but if someone hates how it makes them feel, that’s fine for them. Death Stranding is my favorite game of all time. If someone thinks it’s boring, that’s their feeling and that’s great and I’m happy to debate with them. I love how subjective gaming is. Because you actually control a character’s actions, you get a deep connection with their actions… if you want to, you know? It’s awesome.
@somnambulance
AHHH...I see you are a person of reason. There are very few like you in gaming forums...lol.
If Hogwarts wasnt just a couple of weeks away, I might have jumped in. I dont feel the hate for this title that others seem to celebrate, although its undoubtably got some big flaws. Even with them I think im going to enjoy it, but not more than Hogwarts. Meanwhile im still thougroughly enjoying Judgement, so no need to jump in yet. Looks like I'll pick it up in a sale after all.
I hope it does ok and the team fix some of the tech issues.
I originally had planned on pre-ordering Forspoken.
Now my new plan is to wait until it's on sale for $20 New or cheaper in 2-3 years.
I pre-ordered it a long time ago from Best Buy, just to get the steelbook with it.
I went to pick it up and there was no steelbook with it, so I told them to refund my money.
I will just wait for it to go on sale now
