With Sony now more or less completely withdrawn from the handheld gaming market, it’s perhaps easy to forget that the PSP was a huge success. While it was pretty much always in the Nintendo DS’ shadow, the system sold a staggering 80 million units throughout its lifespan, and served as a precursor to pocketable multimedia devices like smartphones.
This author was still at the tail-end of high school when the PSP launched, and has fond memories watching Spider-Man 2 in class and loading up the Memory Stick Duo with Motion City Soundtrack songs. The games were also great, of course – and there were loads of them, as third-party developers really bought into the prospect of a portable PlayStation at the time.
As has been the case with our recent Best PS Vita Games and Best PS3 Games, we want to compile a definitive list of the absolute cream of the PSP crop, and we want it to be determined by your ratings. That means we need you to think back to the mid-noughties, and rate some of the games you played on Sony’s cutting-edge handheld console.
We have some really powerful tools that should help make this as entertaining as possible for you. Using the widget below, you can search for specific games, and then score them appropriately out of 10. We’ll then compile all of this data and use it to present a final, overall list of Best PSP Games, which we’ll publish on the site.
The cool thing about these lists is they’re determined by you, not necessarily our editorial staff, and they’re able to grow and evolve over time. That means if you take umbrage with the results, you can actually do something about it. As you may have guessed, we’ll gradually be applying these same principles to other PlayStation consoles, but for now let’s focus on the PSP.
It’s worth noting that if there’s a particular game missing, we’ll try to add it in – just let us know in the comments section below. Also, because the PSP pre-dates Push Square somewhat, there may be some scruffiness in our game database. Please excuse the mess, and let us know about any glaring issues – we’ll try to fix them.
What’s your favourite PSP game? Take some time to rate your favourites using the widget above, and then let us know in the comments section below.

As mentioned in the article, PSP is definitely a little scruffy when it comes to our games database, so we want to use this opportunity to tidy some of that up.
Do copy me in if a particular game is missing, or you notice any weird issues, like incorrect developer/publisher and so on.
Thanks for helping us to rate these!
Obvious answers are the GTA games, Kingdom Hearts etc but the PSP has the most hidden gems of any console I’ve played. Lots of impressive ports of other games. Sid Meier’s Pirates is a fantastic conversion to play on PSP.
This list will come in handy now that my PSVITA has a big library of PSP games to browse
My favourites (that I actually owned) were Peace Walker, PES and Chinatown Wars! I think I had some more but I don't actually remember them lol
On god if Persona 3 ain’t in the top 5 bro
Growlanser IV: Wayfarer of Time my personal favorite.
Finally, a good Playstation handheld being talked about. The only thing missing from this incredible device was the second analog stick. Everything else was great... including the fantastic library.
The games I played the most on it are as followed:
Jack and Daxter the Lost Fromtier 8
Daxter 7.5
Bust A Move Ghost 9.5
Sonic Ruvals 1 and 2 8.5
Loco Roco 1 and 2 9.5
Ratchet and Clank Size Matters 8.5
Secret Agent Clank 7
God of War Chains of Olympus 7.5
God of War Ghost of Sparta 8
Killzone Mercernary 9.5
I did play many more but these are the ones I like the most.
My PSP was my JRPG machine prior to the Vita and Switch. P3 Portable (a.k.a the reason why I wanted a PSP back then), Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII, Radiant Mythology, Dissidia 012, Kingdom Hearts BBS, Disgaea 2 and some other games that I may have forgotten to list (plus the PS1 jrpgs)
Some notable non-jrpg, MGS Peacewalker, MGS Portable OPS, GoW Chains of Olympus, Ghost of Sparta, Pangya, Silent Hill Shattered Memories, Castlevania Dracula X Chronicle, the portable Armored Core games and God Eater.
Great times, it was at the time when the PSP was my only console and where I spent hundreds of hours playing games, watching videos and playing music. Overall, one of the best handhelds I've ever owned
PSP had the best god of war of all time (GoS) and the portable version of the best Midnight Club of all time .
it had a midnight club game by the way , what’s that anymore ?😢
Man there are a TON of PSP games. I never realized how many released on the handheld.
@Deoxyr1bose If only there was a definitive version of Persona 3. I can’t say I prefer Portable to FES in all honesty despite the improvements. I miss the free roam world, cutscenes and overall presentation too much.
I loved the VITA, but never had a PSP. And as no PSP games had trophy challenges, I never played any PSP games on the VITA either. They were generally just innately lesser experiences for this reason than all the other games I had still to play. There’s a few games I always meant to get to despite this, but I just always had too many full games to play. Shame, really, that these games were never remade for PS4 or VITA.
Shout out to Lunar on PSP! But man are there a lot of bad games on this system
Slowly building my PSP collection on my Vita and this will help me find some gems. Personal favorite right now is Final Fantasy 4 The Complete Collection. I think it’s the best version of FF4 and it’s only on PSP.
I rarely play my PSP games and I only have 8 PSP games so far.
1. Pop'n Music Portable
2. Secret Agent Clank
3. Hannah Montana Rock Out the Show
4. Minna no Tennis Portable
5. Minna no Golf 2
6. MonHun Poka Poka Airu Mura G
7. Airu de Puzzle
8. Street Fighter Alpha 3 MAX
I remember finally caving and buying a psp a week before the vita was announced (which had backwards compat with it). So I didn't really spend much time with it, and most of the games I did play from it I played on vita.
Persona 3 portable, both God of wars and peace walker are my favourites (obvious answers I know)
I'm more of a Vita guy but the PSP is also a nice little handheld that has some hidden gems such as LocoRoco, Patapon and Persona 1-3. I miss Sony handhelds but I don't think it'd be the same if they done one again.
My favourites Crisis Core, Dissidia, Birth By Sleep, Tekken 5 DR, Bleach Heat Of The Soul 7 and Tenchu Time Of Assassins
I played quite a fair bit of Yugioh GX Tag Force 3, used to play this game daily with a friend before, during and after school, even on the bus, both of us practically 100% the game in just a couple months... kinda makes me wish Konami would remaster Yugioh GX Tag Force 1, 2 & 3 for PS & Switch, they were surprisingly good games with a lot of fun minigames.
Loved all the Lego games for the PSP (the early ones at least before TT decided that the lame DS versions should get ported) They were pretty much just like the PS2 versions - still remember being blown away by Lego Star Wars - The Original Trilogy (why did this never appear on the PS Store for Vita?)
Other games of note were Dungeon Siege: ToA (worked a LOT better on series 2000 onwards models) and Untold Legends for top down hack & slash and others such as the lovely conversions of Everybody's Golf and Ratchet & Clank (this is better on Vita due to stick #2)
Oooh, and I almost forgot 2 of the best possible Worms games: Open Warfare and Open Warfare 2 - ANOTHER couple of games than never graced the PS Store. So many UMDs to play and nowhere to put them any more!
Also, as an aside, the PSP seemed to have been made in a more fun Sony era, with custom chips named Spock & Kirk, amongst others.
@nessisonett
Agreed if there is one game out there that needs a "Definitive Edition" release it is Persona 3. Portable plays better and has the female protagonist story but FES has the better presentation and exploration as well as the epilogue.
I remember I unintentionally confused the heck out of my buddy when he asked which one I recommended him to play!
@get2sammyb Warriors - The movie tie in by rockstar
Missing - and is my fave.
@get2sammyb the remakes of final fantasy 1 and 2 are missing.
Grand theft auto vice city stories.grand theft auto liberty city stories.god of war chains of olympus. God of war ghost of sparta.daxter.resistance retribution.dead head fred. Metal gear peacewalker.pursuit force.silent hills origins.capcom classics collection reloaded.etc etc.so many amazing games on the iconic psp.word up son
@get2sammyb Lumines is missing. It’s #1 in most best of PSP lists. 😂
Jean d'Arc was just as good as War of the Lions imo, Patapon and Crisis Core stand out as well. The GoWs are nice too. Especially chains of Olympus
Burnout Legends, Daxter and Dead 2 Rights are some of my favorite PSP games.
@get2sammyb you missed all 3 Hatsune Miku games, which only came to Japan.
They are awesome.
Lumines 10
Star Soldier 8
Darius Burst 9
Taiko no Tatsujin Portable 8
Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA 7
Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA 2nd 7
Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA Extend 8
My two favourite PSP games are pretty rogue, I'm not sure why, can't say my favourite games are that obscure on any other PlayStation platform.
1. Metal Gear Acid 2
2. Everybody's Golf/Hot Shots Open Tee
Monster Hunter Freedom Unite
The Legend of Heroes
Patapon 1-3
Ys 7 - Ys Oath of Felghana
Tactics Ogre Let us Cling Together
Little Big Planet
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
Dissidia
Persona 1-3
Power Stone Collection
Lunar Silver Star Harmony
Peace Walker
Syphon Filter
Breath of Fire 3
Corpse Party
Final Fantasy 1-4
PSP was 🔥
My favorite exclusive game for PSP is Crisis Core, really a hiden gem. Final Fantasy type zero is also awesome though I can not find it in the list.
Castlevania The Dracula X Chronicles must be on top!
Crisis core for me, the ending still sticks with me to this day, so well done.
All three of the Patapon games hold a very special place in my heart. Bought both of the remasters when they released on ps4, and I am still hopeful for a remaster of the third game as well.
Pata Pata Pata PON!
Definitely Metal Gear Acid/2 for me. A different approach with the card based system but the strategic gameplay grew on me.
Another underated game was Death Jr.
The first time I saw WipEout Pure running on that screen my jaw hit the floor. The post-game support via the DLC system (something entirely new for console games at that point) was outstanding, particularly the Omega pack we got in the UK as an apology for the late launch.
Greatest racing game of all time.
We need Syphon Filter remakes, especially from the 1st 3 games.
I only ever played Metal Gear Portable Ops and it wasn't the best way to play Metal Gear at the time and personality doesn't hold up for me.
Even the PS Vita didn't improve controls that much. I only ever use mine for playing PS1 classics.
@amenohi Added!
@Nintendo4Sonic Not adding imports at this stage, focused on EU/US releases. But thanks for the heads up!
@NielsNL Added!
@RogerRoger Fixed!
@darkswabber Final Fantasy 1 & 2 added!
@Stocksy The Warriors has been added!
What timing for this poll article to pop up! I got my PSP out of the attic yesterday!
Sadly I traded in most of my PSP games back in the day when i was around 14yrs old to help buy a PS3 (back when it was £425)
Thankfully still have a few of my faves:
Daxter
KH: Birth By Sleep
Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters
and the demo UMD with the Spidey 2 trailer and Natasha Bedingfield's "These Words" music vid xD.
Loved playing Tomb Raider Legend and Anniversary and Pursuit Force on the old handheld too.
I just bought myself a PSP off eBay yesterday and it's got 14 games with it too!!! Plus I got 3 other games already waiting for the console to arrive. The results of this poll will be very handy.
Basically I got it just to play FF7: Crisis Core, which I've never played before.
Best of the best:
Persona 3
FF7: Crisis Core
Also Virtua Tennis (and VIta Virtua Tennis) are still the best tennis games on Portable unless ur a big Mario fan
Lumines, Chains of Olympus and Burnout Legends were my favorites.
@Zuljaras good shout. I forgot about that one.
@AFCC I loaded all my games from my psp 3000 to my vita with quite ease and a "convenient" memory card, I don't play my psp or vita often mind you tho
@mattb2020 What games did you get with it?
@get2sammyb I bought lumines, gran turismo and crisis core. The 14 I got with the console are:
PES 2010
PES6
PES 5 (2 copies)
WIPEOUT PULSE
TIGER WOODS 08
FIFA 06
VIRTUA TENNIS 3
BURNOUT LEGENDS
LOCOROCO
MIDNIGHT CLUB L.A REMIX
NEED FOR SPEED UNCOVERED
CHAMPIONSHIP MANAGER
WORLD RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP (WRC)
@get2sammyb Not seeing the original Corpse Party in your list.
Anything by Nintendo.
@huyi I didn't play on my VITA for like 5 years or more! But now that I discovered mods, I am downloading some classics there
My main two reasons for owning a PSP were MGS Peace Walker and Valkyria Chronicles 2.
@AFCC same but as soon as I modded my vita and put my psp collection on there I was golden, plus as you mentioned you can mod games and have fun with it 💖💖👍👍
Awesome system, in my top 3 mobile platforms of all-time with Switch and GBA. Particularly love the Syphon Filter games and Resistance Retribution. Bend Studio was stellar on the PSP.
@get2sammyb No Velocity? No Coconut Dodge? Shocking!
@Theaussiegamer92
One of the few Final Fantasy games I really enjoyed. Hopefully it'll be part of the lineup of games headed to the new PS Plus.
I loved playing on my PSP back in the day. Some of my personal favorite PSP games were:
Of course, I also really loved being able to play PSone classics on the PSP as well. Especially Spyro and The Legend of Dragoon.
I still have my PSP, and it still works. However, the battery kind of warped over time (which I found out just in time was a common issue), so I removed the warped battery before it caused any damage. Thankfully, I can still play it just fine as long as it is plugged in with its charger. That's a really cool thing about the PSP; it can run just fine and play games while plugged in, even if you don't have a battery inside of it. Since we're STILL waiting on Square Enix to port Star Ocean: Second Evolution on to modern platforms outside of Japan, I'm thankful I at least still have my PSP and my copy of Star Ocean: Second Evolution for it.
