It's only a couple of weeks old, but Zenless Zone Zero can already be classed as yet another slam dunk for HoYoverse. The free-to-play action RPG is the third game that the Chinese developer has released on PlayStation, alongside Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail — and both of those titles are still attracting a huge number of players day in, day out. But how do you feel about this latest HoYoverse outing?
"In some ways this is a strange beast: artistically it’s all over the place, pulling from a litany of different sources and somehow stringing them all together into a cohesive, compelling whole," is what we wrote in our Zenless Zone Zero PS5 review. "But at its heart it’s a character action game with a massive emphasis on team-building, and it’s a bloody good one at that," we concluded, awarding the title a 'great' 8/10.
So, what score would you give Zenless Zone Zero? Make sure to rate it in our poll, and then explain yourself in the comments section below.

7 feels the most fair. It’s no Dynasty Warriors but I really love the world and setting so it gets brownie points for that. Plus some of my favorite character designs.
Edit: for some reason I didn’t notice the subheadline when typing the comment, now got caught offgaurd and bursted out in laughter.
I'm floating between a 7 and an 8. I love the world, the aesthetic, the characters and the combat, but trying to shoehorn a Genshin style RPG grind feels like the wrong move. The appeal to this game is it's stylish combat, and that gets severely diminished once you have to worry about levels, stats, DPS and team comps. I'll definitely keep up with the story, but I just don't have the drive min/max the same way I do in Genshin.
I played Genshin for about a minute, so 1/10 seems fair.
@EfYI that's fair.
I originally was going to give it a 6 but then I remembered it was free and I’ve been having fun for most of my 20 hours so bumped it up to a 7.
After a very great start with interesting characters, story and the potential for world building I’m now 87% done w/ chapter 1 and the past few days have just felt like a pointless grind where I’m having to actively try to seek out stuff to do. I have the 3 Hares maxed out to 20, more than half the coins, and I’ve done Soldier 11 and all available missions and VR missions. Wise just asked me to go look into finding new tapes from the namecards we got so I turned it off, wasn’t interested.
The fighting is great, I like the maze path mini game in the hollows, and I don’t even mind walking around a little bit, but I really am interested in the overarching story involving Fairy and what’s up with that, and it’s basically been forgotten. Hoping things change when I get to chapter 2.
I should say it’s my first MiHoYo game so there is way too much minutiae going on for me that hasn’t been explained. I have way too many W-engines, not sure what I need more Bangboo for and not enough Agents. I understand this is just a time waster but I don’t even know what the batteries are for, been at 400/240 for days, a million Dennie’s I rarely use, and 5,000 color forms. I think they spent too much time creating all these things that they forgot to explain what to do with them.🤷🏻♂️
7 but maybe a 6. I'm loving the different characters and factions. The character designs are top notch. Im actually kinda sad some of them are stuck in this game instead of any other better game. Combat is fairly simple but fun. The TV puzzles can be kinda repetitive but never really overly long. It's a fun game to play in short bursts
Not going to give a score. Adored setting and visual design since the reveal, but tv gameplay absolutely killed the game for me. Thankfully Reynatis is looking like everything and more I hoped ZZZ would be.
7 for what's in the game now. It left a bad impression the first time I played it, but after the prologue everything clicked for me and I've been obsessed with it.
Solid combat with a bunch of cool characters, the world and story are surprisingly intriguing in how the fantasy elements take a backseat to more grounded plots that fit the urban setting.
The game looks and sounds great, everyone agrees on that.
The biggest issue is basically just the resource grind that comes with F2P games. I seriously think this game could be an 8 as it is now if it came as a full priced release with no daily limits or gacha included.
I'd give it a 7. It has plently going for it, but the UI is a hassle to navigate, the TV mode absolutely kills the pacing and not being able to control characters you've pulled for outside of combat is a massive shame.
However, the art design is great, the voice acting is enjoyable and combat is pretty fun overall.
I'll give the game an eight mostly because you kill the same bosses and enemies and the stages are constantly being recycled ad nauseum for side quests and whatever. The characters are fun and great to use but once you've got a solid team built up you can really just mash square most of the time and get through everything fairly easily. Like, I'm level 40 now and the combat hasn't evolved much besides maybe the enemies attacking a bit quicker and having more health/resistance.
With everything being said, the world is truly a fun one. The music is great and the overall presentation is just superb. It feels like a believable world. Even the grind isn't too terrible. What annoys me is what always annoys me in Hoyo games, the relic grind...or disc drives in this game. I hate the utter RNG that makes it take days if not weeks to achieve your desired build and really reach your character's full potential.
9 for now (I don't know how/what the end game will be). The game is my favorite out of all of the famous 3 Hoyoverse games that I've tried.
I love the quirky and unique characters, satisfying combat and interesting story. My only gripe so far it's the unfriendly and distracting UI.
It's a very lacking game, even without thinking about the monetisation.
The lack of a proper world map to explore, the repetitive environments - there's just not a lot of things to do.
The things that are there are copying Persona without copying any of the things that make Persona work - choosing to interact with particular characters, managing time because you have a strict deadline etc.
The combat is fun, but compare it to any other action game - God of War, Devil May Cry, Warframe, even Dynasty Warriors - it's like they've preserved the combat and stripped out every other element of that game.
Yes it's free. But it's bogs down the action with all this F2P stats and grinding that don't make sense, and at the end of the day there are better things to do with your time. I kept waiting for it to click, and it didn't.
If you ignore monetisation, Genshin has 10x more to it than ZZZ, as does Honkai Star Rail
It gets better as it goes on. A solid 8 now for me. For the first 20 hours I would have given it a 7.
@Judal27 "Im actually kinda sad some of them are stuck in this game"
Spot on! The design of the whole thing (graphics, menus, characters, world, animations) is so much up my alley that I almost can't handle it.
Imagine SEGA would do the new Jet Set Radio like this …..
@TheAmbienWalrus
Honestly it's not too bad. You can even set the game to an easier difficulty to get through the story. On top of that the story chapters will usually let you play with pre-leveled "trial characters" which give you a nice taste of how the 5 star gacha characters play. Now if you want to do every bit of content that the game has at the moment then THAT'S when the grind will really start to hit and you'll notice just how often you're replaying stages and fighting the same enemies. If you just want to get through all the chapters out now it won't take you long but remember that these games are in it for the long haul so you probably won't get the satisfaction of an ending because they want to keep pumping out story over months if not years.
@TheAmbienWalrus you can play at your own pace, and if you wanna upgrade, it's easy and you do a little each day..it's the slice of life that gives it life..
I gave it a 10, because for me , it's literally perfect, I love everything about it, and I adore living in the world as Belle.. the art dire lion is a delight, the stories get better and better, and the combat seems simple, but hides complexity for when I want it.. truly hoyos magnum opus..
I give it an 8 but I'm likely playing it "wrong", I'm playing it more like a traditional SP game. I like the starting 3 characters personalities and a few of the characters I got from the free pulls are interesting enough. The story interests me more than than needing a specific character. The few NPCs I've met are also have some nice quests/personalities so that cool. The combat is simple yet engaging. The music is pretty good as is the overall design of the game. The Waifu/Husbando "need" to get a character aspect is also lost on me, so no FOMO there. I guess I just view it as a F2P/Grindy Persona 5 knock off.
I really see this as a filler game to play when short on time or in between big single player games.
Combat and animation wise it's a solid 8. Really enjoyable when fighting but the overworld is as dull as dishwater. That entire TV thing is abysmal, awful pacing and that music in there is ear cancer. 6/10 overall.
Decent 7, gets annoying after level 30, consistenly hitting " get to this level to continue"
@TheAmbienWalrus It's a mobile game at core regardless of how many platforms it appears on; all HYV games are designed/meant to be played in snippets.
I have it a 6. I thought my time with it was okay, but nothing truly breath taking. The gameplay feels disconnected between the real world, abyss (or whatever it is), and the board game movement mechanics between zones. I ended up uninstalling relatively quickly because it took too long to become enjoyable.
1, just the title alone.
P2w trash I would buy buy a 4090 then spend 3k just to get a single character hell I can get entire top of the range PC with that money much bette then wasting it on this gacha nonsense
I'd give it a 5/10. Not horrible, but the gotcha grinding mechanics really drag it down.
