The first quarter of 2024 has been crazy, especially if you're a fan of Japanese games. The release schedule has been pretty much non-stop since January, and so earlier in the week, we asked the Push Square community to vote on their favourite titles of the last four months.
Over 1,000 votes were cast, and users had to choose just one game from a rather stacked list. You can read that article below, which includes our editorial team's own picks.
Now then, without further ado, here are the Push Square community's ten favourite games of the 2024 so far...
10. Persona 3 Reload - 24 votes (2%)
9. Unicorn Overlord - 25 votes (2%)
8. Balatro - 27 votes (3%)
7. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown - 33 votes (3%)
6. Rise of the Ronin - 41 votes (4%)
5. The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered - 52 votes (5%)

People tend to know what they like and they like what they know, and so it's no huge surprise to see The last of Us Part 2 Remastered show up in the top five. This enhanced re-release of Naughty Dog's most divisive game still tells one of the most brutal stories in modern gaming, and its gripping gameplay remains top tier.
4. Dragon's Dogma 2 - 85 votes (8%)

12 years later, and Capcom has finally delivered on a sequel to Dragon's Dogma. Although unlike its predecessor, Dragon's Dogma 2 hasn't had to wait years for its greatness to be recognised. Racking up more than 2.5 million sales on release and garnering so many positive reviews, the open world action RPG is shaping up to be yet another success story for the Japanese publisher.
3. Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth - 101 votes (10%)

It's clear that developer RGG Studio put everything that it possibly could into Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth. The result is one of the most robust and emotional games in the entire franchise — and that's saying a lot! Both Ichiban Kasuga and Kazuma Kiryu play leading roles this time around, and with a much improved turn-based battle system, the general consensus is that this is an incredible sequel.
2. Helldivers 2 - 247 votes (24%)

Imagine going back in time and telling people that Helldivers 2 would be as massive as it currently is. You'd be laughed at, but the truth is that developer Arrowhead Studios has gone above and beyond with this live service, co-op shooter. The game just seems to go from strength to strength, and so it's more than deserving of second place on this list — and by some distance!
1. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth - 276 votes (27%)

And in first place, pulling ahead of even the mighty Helldivers 2, we have Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth — the Push Square community's most popular PS5 pick of 2024 so far. Nostalgia is an immensely powerful thing, and this second instalment in the Remake trilogy is absolutely dripping with it. But even if you're new to this whole saga, there's still an ambitious, often crazy RPG here, stuffed with bombastic boss fights and enough mini games to make a Yakuza title blush. We're left wondering whether Rebirth will top our readers' Game of the Year poll...
What do you think of the community's top ten? Did you favourite PS5 game make the cut? Be sure to correct your fellow readers in the comments section below.

Rebirth being number 1 doesn't surprise me. That game has no right being so fun and so big at the same time.
What a year, too many good games to play really.
And what a game ReBirth is and quite possibly (imo) Squares best game to date, I expect it to be in the same place come the end of the year votes/poll.
So uh, is anything going to shift by December?
Even though Helldivers didnt get top spot or end up not winning any game of the year awards, at years end. This was and will remain the surprise hit of 2024! No one predicted how big it would blow up, not even the developers (as shown by the server cap issues). It is a great underdog tale, a great addition to show how live service should be done. and I hope it gets all the accolades it deserves by years end. For Democracy.
Easily Final Fantasy VII Rebirth so far for me, but considering how much I loved the demo, I have a sneaking suspicion that Stellar Blade will push it all the way. Well, here’s hoping!
Also, considering it’s somewhat niche, I’m really happy to see Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown feature so highly. Such a fantastic Metroidvania.
Top 3 games are so well deserved. What an absolute banger year. Hoping there aren't too many more releases (Hellblade 2 and Trails to Day break all I can think of now). Plan to get to Balatro soon, and will pick Unicorn Overlord up maybe by the summer.
Rebirth at #1 was a given. Glad to see my vote Unicorn Overlord make it into the top 10.
I've enjoyed Final Fantasy Rebirth but personally I think Like A Dragon is the best game I've played on PS5 this year so far, with Tekken 8 in 2nd place and FFVII 3rd
Glad my 2 favorite games of the year so far made it into the top 5. Dragons dogma 2 is just an awesome rpg and it's amazing just how much there is to do in the game. Helldivers 2 is just in a class of its own and I just love the fact you can spend all day on it or just a few hours and it never gets boring. Life has taken me and my family down a dark path recently so it's great that I've have these games and the guys I've teamed up with through pushsquare to take my mind of things and allow me to escape and smile and swear an awful lot at helldivers 2. I can't thank them enough.
Does Final Fantasy VII Rebirth deserve to be number 1? Yes.
Should it be selling more copies? Yes.
Do I get why some fans might be disappointed in it? Yes.
Do I think that backlash is a little overblown? Yes.
Who performed the song Owner of a Lonely Heart? Yes.
I really need to get over my hang-up about the impossible Balatro trophies and grab it. It's perfect for my new PS Portal.
Unicorn Overlord, too. That's a must at some point this spring.
I feel like most people enjoyed Rebirth, but the people that didn't are just really loud online.
Well deserved no.1. I got to ch.12 and the game opened up with tons of new quests and side content to do. And I just couldn't help but smile cause this is what I love about jrpgs. I don't care if I'm supposed to stop sephiroth. Let me run around and do errands for strangers, play cards games, and just explore this gorgeous world
I only played Persona 3 Reload out of everything on that list and I didn't like it at all.. Was planning on buying FF7Rebirth after playing through Remake, but alas. That's not going to happen anymore.
Weak start of 2024 for me - for the Playstation anyway.
A lot of amazing video games.my backlog of games is getting bigger.word up son
Tekken 8 deserves at least honorable mention imo
I've played 2 games on that list and one of them was remastered. I feel like I would've played a few more if not for Helldivers 2.
What a game. I adore it. This is from someone that hasn't played a multiplayer game since the original Modern Warfare 3. My friends, who rarely play games, even got in to it. We meet up on there for at least one game a night. I never thought I'd be this much in to a live service game.
I cancelled playstation plus after they put the price up. It finishes in May. I'm going to have to renew at the essential rate to carry on playing.
"Nostalgia is an immensely powerful thing"
I feel like you're trying to downplay this result somewhat, Robert. 😄
It's also the highest rated release so far this year on both metacritic and opencritic of all games across all platforms.
Rebirth is a deserved number 1 for me. It's still early but I'll be surprised if I enjoy my playthrough of anything else as much.
Hope that the Ffvii rebirth game sell as well as it is praised..
@JonnyAces it gets repetitive really quickly
Not a lot of votes, which says to me, not everyone is either bothered to vote or haven't bought any games this year.
The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered doesnt belong on the list
@TrickyDicky99 What PS4 games lol the top 5 are current gen only and no way would have ran on the PS4.
Just got the plat on FF7 Rebirth yesterday.. what a journey it was, from amazing moments, fun, nostalgia, up to some frustration as well due to the difficulty of few minigames hard modes and specially the legendary / brutal VR challenges..
They kinda overdid it in the amount of minigames and difficulty of those challenges..
Being of one of my favourites games of all time, glad it's topping up!
Prince of Persia is the best game so far this year. 2D games are so under appreciated.
Get TLOU part 2 outta here. It’s a great game, but it released in 2020. It’s a barely noticeable remaster at that. Without it, I’d bet we’d have Tekken in there, which is a much better top 10 for 2024 game. The past five years have gotten really weird with old games being GotY nominees on some platforms. I remember Persona 5 being a contender with some mags when it came to Switch and Xbox. Great games are great and deserve praise, but they deserve GotY discussions the year they release initially unless it’s a ground-up remake.
Rebirth belongs in #1. Glad to see the community vote for the best game. Glad to see Balatro and Prince of Persia in the list as well. Loved all three of them immensely and made 2024 start off like a continuation of the incredible 2023 lineup.
I didn't know Helldivers 2 was going to be the success it is today but I knew it was going to be as fun as it is. All my trust was with ArrowHead and they delivered big time.
Cool for number 1. If I could change anything I would put Unicorn Overlord on 3rd and send Persona 3 home. I'm sure SEGA deal to treat every Atlus game as an xbox exclusive is so good they are asking you $100 to get the full experience lol.
We are trully spoilt this year already. Agree with all the titles... Im close to finishing rebirth and its hard to imagine a game topping it for me this year, but theres plenty that might!
Looking forward to Rebirth, I’ve got two weeks off in a couple of weeks, so I’m saving it. I’m actually enjoying FFXVI at the moment (more than I thought I would), after finishing FFX remake. Total FF fest at the moment!
Don’t play online HD2 and last of us part 2 I don’t count as of course done on PS4 pro.
So far for me Rise of the Ronin.
That’s not just on PS5 but across all three consoles for me.
Would have thought there'd been more than a 1000ish votes 😮
I still haven't finished Infinite Wealth. It's still fantastically zany but i honestly preferred the first game up to yet.
When the top 4 should actually be the top 4
@GMaster7 Some absolute degenerate has the platinum in that game. It really is amazing on the portal.
I didnt vote but I agree with number 1. My GotY.
@ShogunRok Out of curiosity do your poll results capture the region of the votes? I.E. do you have the ability to see/share the results by UK, NA, EU, rest of world separately? I'd be really curious to see what the NA only, UK only, everywhere else lists might look like.
@NEStalgia Nah, our polls don't track any data like that, but it's an interesting thought! If we wanted to get a bit more in-depth with polls, that's the kind of thing we could look into if people wanted it.
@Cloud39472 @Intr1n5ic
Amazing results for HD2. If 6 months ago you said it would be within 3% or FF7 as most popular game of the year, 90% of people would probably have asked what Helldivers is.
@ShogunRok Don't you dare bring the special one in to this!
TLOU2 - I don't get it
I voted for TLOU2. I never played the original so I only know this remastered version. It’s probably my favorite game ever surpassing part 1 which I played last year. The No Return mode is new, right? I had so much fun with that, too. Lots of replayability.
I’m about 30 hours into Dragon’s Dogma 2 which may overtake TLOU2 for my GOTY
Top 5 are top 5. I'd switch rise with part 2 but otherwise excellent job my friends across the pond
Yakuza in top 3! I m really happy now.
@Maubari Weak start for playstation? They've had Granblue Fantasy Relink, HellDivers 2, Rise of the Ronin, Final Fantasy 7 ReBirth, TLOU 2 Remastered and soon to be Stellar Blade and that's just the first 4 months of the year. Compared to what Nintendo and Xbox have released this year Playstation is killing it so far.
Dragon's Dogma II stands tall above anything else I've played this year. Second best game is Like a Dragon 8, and that doesn't even come close.
Absolute deserved top 3!
Rebirth on #1 is well deserved, this will likely be GOTY too, i'd be surprised if it wasn't. Infinite wealth also was greatly fun and nice to see a Yakuza game in the top 3! Helldivers 2, i played it and surprisingly (i'm not a shooter guy) had lots and lots of fun coop playing this with some friends too.
Rest of the top 10 are good too i think, haven't played Dragon's Dogma yet, but from what i hear it's very fun too. P3 Reload, Balatro and TLOU2 Remaster are still on my to-play list, and i might have to look at the Ronin game now too.
I'm not gonna say these are bad games but... for nearly the first half of the year in mid-gen this is the weakest I've ever seen. Honestly, this gen, other than a handful of gems here and there, has been hugely dissapointing and it sucks that the only game I look forward to with a release date is black myth wukong.
Didn't vote in the poll because I just finished BG3 a couple weeks ago so hadn't played anything from 2024 yet. Started Solasta: Crown of the Magister a few days ago, & so far (much too early to give a proper opinion yet) it's the perfect palette cleanser after living with BG3 so long (started it in Nov.)! 👍🏼
Unicorn Overlord at 9 is criminal, that game should be higher up, in my opinion. Rebirth, Unicorn Overlord, and Helldivers 2 would top my list. Either way though, it’s only mid-April and this year has already been incredible!
Interesting, I will have to try Balatro and Unicorn Overlord at some point. My favourite game so far is HD2 and I didn't even think I was going to pick it up, previewed great so I pre-ordered it and haven't played much else since since - truly brilliant!
@Mostik Try Balatro at your own peril. I don’t know how something that addictive can be legal.
On pure hours played my top 3 would be Tekken 8, Balatro and Infinite Wealth. I want to complete Infinite Wealth before diving into another big RPG, it will be a toss up between Unicorn overlord and FF Rebirth.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is definitely deserving, but of the games on the list, I'd have Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth at the top. Awesome game. RGG Studio doesn't seem to miss.
@UltimateOtaku91
Yeah, it's probably just a ''me'' thing. Looking at your list, I suppose it's not a weak year at all haha. I'm losing faith in Sony - alot - as the franchises that I grew up with are left to rot while newer ones keep popping up. I can't keep up and that's probably why I think it was a weak year so far when that's not the case at all. Playstation is just not my preferred gaming platform anymore, that's all
