A batch of hands-on previews have arrived for the hotly anticipated DOOM: The Dark Ages, and it sounds like it'll be worth the wait. This prequel to the modern DOOM series is set for launch on 15th May, 2025, and while that's not very long to wait, these previews have us counting down the days.
Overall, sentiment is very positive for id Software's upcoming FPS. Basically all the previews we've seen agree that it's another uncompromising shooter that plays excellently, with gameplay changes that sound like a departure from the previous two titles.
Many outlets highlight the shield as a fundamental difference in The Dark Ages, providing you with a versatile tool/weapon that makes your approach a little more defensive and deliberate. It can block, parry, and deflect certain attacks, you can throw it around an arena, you can rush down enemies — it sounds like it's core to the action in the new game.
The shield seemingly doesn't mean you'll be standing still, though — this is DOOM, after all, and it sounds like you'll still be on the move most of the time.
Its utility apparently extends to solving simple environmental puzzles and platforming, with some outlets comparing it to Kratos' Leviathan axe in God of War.
Impressing less consistently are the sections featuring a giant mech and a dragon; these sequences seem to be included to change up the pace, but there are concerns that they aren't as fleshed out as the core action.
Still, there are plenty of reasons for fans to be excited, from the large open maps to the new gameplay tweaks to the heavier emphasis on story. It sounds like another rip-roaring FPS, and we're looking forward to jumping in.
VGC - "Everything that I'd hope and expect from a DOOM game"
While I may not be instantly convinced by some of the game’s more gimmicky elements, the gameplay of Doom: The Dark Ages is unimpeachable. The changes made to movement and weapons make for a game that sits comfortably between 2016 and Eternal, and I think it’s set to outshine both of them.
IGN - "Might well represent the peak of the series’s modern era"
From its satisfying shield-based combat shake-up and enticing sandbox level structures, to its Pacific Rim-rocking skyscraper-sized beatdowns and its dazzling dragon-riding dogfights, the team behind Doom: The Dark Ages is seemingly throwing everything but Hell’s kitchen sink into making this the biggest and best campaign seen to date in the seminal shooter series.
Eurogamer - "Another reinvention, but one that feels less cleanly defined"
Actually, it's id Software's expertise that I keep coming back to, and how nice it is that it not only successfully resurrected Doom in 2016, much to many people's surprise - mine included - but how it's been given time and resources to develop it, to reimagine it, since. This is a bold reimagining, a brave departure, and even though I have reservations about some things in The Dark Ages, I do not have reservations about id.
GameSpot - "Might be the most comprehensive Doom game to date"
Id Software is bringing a lot of new mechanics and ideas to the series, while maintaining its hypnotic flow state. It’s hard to say if they’ll be able to keep that momentum as new ideas and mechanics are introduced, but it’s made an excellent first impression.
GamesRadar+ - "Every addition to the core loop feels like an amazing idea"
Doom: The Dark Ages is, I'm told before my demo, built around the concept of 'stand and fight', and every moment I'm directly in control of the Doom Slayer lives up to that. Taking hits and dealing them back twofold is the most aggressive Doom has ever felt.

Doom 2016 is in my view as near a perfect game as they come.
I found Eternal fiddly by comparison and while I still had a good time, by the time I reached the DLC I was done.
My worry with Dark Ages was that it would stray too far from the simplicity and fun of the first into too many systems and ideas that ultimately force your hand in combat and take away a lot of the fun.
I'm glad I have gamepass to give it a try without a purchase but I'm keeping my fingers firmly crossed that it sweeps all my fears away...
They are changing up the formula a bit, which is both exciting and a bit worrying. Will have to wait and see on release how it feels. But I don't think larger more open areas and more story are necessarily a good thing for Doom. But it depends if they execute well. I have hope.
I'll try it out on gamepass once I'm done with Clair Obscur.
With Mick Gordon not doing the OST, my hype level has dropped by about 30%, but will still porbably give it a go.
Edit: @Dalamar I'm in the same boat, I've got the week off to play Expedition 33!
Not sure that I like the emphasis on melee in a shooter, especially Doom.
@Dalamar gamepass is pretty amazing I hope playstation get gamepass in the future better than the awful ps plus extra ps plus essential is brilliant though. anyway doom eternal is one of my favourite games ever so I expect this game to be amazing I can't wait.
I’m really curious as to how the new tweaks and mechanics to the combat enhance the gameplay, and stay in touch with DOOM’s roots with fast and kinetic shooting. I’m beyond hyped for this game.
I don't like how this series seems to have shifted away from the iconic sci-fi/hell theme into a bland generic dark fantasy aesthetic.
The gameplay also seems like a radical departure from the previous games; now centred around open world checklist completion over a focused, well-paced linear experience.
Loved 2016 but came to hate Eternal. The Eternal levels could be broken down into either ‘traversal area” or “battle” and the dlc made that so painfully obvious. I’m hopeful Dark Ages will be more 16 and without the air traversal parts
I love the 2016 reboot and I enjoyed the classic style deathmatch as it was a real hoot. Eternal is an excellent game as well especially the enhanced ps5 version but the multiplayer was awful..I mean really awful.
Purchased doom eternal deluxe edition recently on ps store for £15 lost interest not that far in the campaign, not that keen on 2016 title, doom 3 still my favourite.
I’ll be trying it out on GP before I decide if I want to buy it or not. I am sure it will be good. But i don’t like games that have flying in them. Not sure why. Not like it’s a bad thing, it just don’t suite my play style. Every thing else looks amazing. I almost got a 5080 GPU this weekend. I am sure this game on a high end PC would look stunning. I.D always scales their games near perfectly for the hardware it’s running on.
I love Doom series (except 2016), right now I bought Heretic, Hexen and Blood series on GOG just to finaly have these games and I love their simplicity. I also had good time with Eternal even if those weapon mods were bit annoying (I just put something there and it somehow worked).
So.... I'm bit worried about Dark Ages. Doom immediately brings me memory of rotating chain-gun as my primary weapon and anything else isn't necessary. Shield, sword, flying... that is rather Space Marine 1... I don't know... We'll see. One way or another, Dark Ages is not so appealing to be day one.
This seems like it might actually be more of a controller game than kb/m. I’m all for it if it is. I’ve tried to play Doom 2016 and Eternal with a controller on PlayStation. I just can’t enjoy those without using kb/m. I’d love to play on my PS5 pro in the living room with a controller instead of being forced to play on PC at my desk. Yeah I know I could move my PC to the living room, but I don’t wanna.
The difficulty curve and settings are the things that will be of most interest to me. I've no doubt I'll love the gameplay, as I did with the first two, but I didn't ever finish either due to becoming frustrated. Even on the easiest setting I found them both to be a bit overwhelming as I progressed. Hoping for a slightly less hectic easy mode this time.
Another for loved 2016, but didnt really like eternal.
Im not really into first person shooters im general, but 2016s story, good level design (ie they made it feel like you were making your way through a real place), and quality kept me hooked for at least 2 playthroughs.
Eternal didnt feel like your were moving through a real place - just a lot of staged battle arenas, didnt get close to hooking me with its story, and felt slightly off on its mechanics. I think I finished it but didnt really enjoy the game.
Both doom 2016 and doom eternal are 2 of the best video games ever made Word up son
This and Expedition 33 are my two most anticipated games right now. I’ve been on complete media blackout on both, I’ve been sold since they were announced.
2016 is one of my favourite games of that decade, but Eternal turned out to be one of my all-time biggest disappointments. It was more akin to a cool-down management sim with some of the worst 3D platforming welded onto it for good measure.
Doom is my favorite series, and I'm very excited for this. It's so ridiculously over the top and self-indulgent. Perfect metal game.
This definitely looks like it leans heavily on contextual actions, for me.
The feeling I get is a lot of journos don't really know what they want. I remember the discussion at the time being a lot were iffy on Eternal being too different to 2016. Whether that be the actual design elements, the platforming mechanics, a lot (also players) despised the new ammo system etc.
But now... We are complaining that it's NOT Eternal? Like... What? I don't know. All I can say is I can't wait, personally. Id have my trust and ill be there day one because honestly... I just want a game to be fun and that's what they've always focused on.
Am glad it’s slower was bloody frenetic. A chance to see the sights too doom 2025 is looking rich man you always think the previous instalments looked just as good yeh well they did “at the time”.. that’s the funny thing about the game industry and that stays with you, and you need a reminder and the initial reboot is almost looking like OG doom in comparison to this lol. That wasn’t even a decade ago?!
