The Star Ocean: The Divine Force review embargo lifted earlier today, and we do not have our own PS5 verdict to share with you. That's because we received access two days ago, which is quite clearly nowhere near long enough to finish a JRPG and then finalise some thoughts for a review. As such, we will share our verdict either at the very end of this week, or next week.
Some scored reviews have been posted online, though, so below is a round up to give you a better idea of what other people think ahead of the game's release on Friday. Let us know if you are buying the JRPG in the comments below.
NoisyPixel - 8/10
Star Ocean The Divine Force is a strongly crafted action JRPG that returns the franchise to form, boasting involved upgrading and customization systems alongside a well-thought-out narrative that may not satisfy or intrigue everyone but will compel those entranced by its cutting edges of notion. Moreover, its excellent English voice cast intensifies the emotional weight of several story-heavy scenes and character-bonding moments. Unfortunately, performance and graphical presentation faults and more minor issues damage the overall experience. Although, if you can look past those stumbles, Star Ocean The Divine Force is a must-play entry for all fans of the genre, whether they already are fans of the franchise or not.
Wccftech - 8/10
Even with some issues here and there, Star Ocean: The Divine Force is undoubtedly a return to form for the series by tri-Ace. The game delivers a solid JRPG experience that both fans of the series and newcomers will enjoy thanks to the best battle system in the series to date, likable characters, and an engaging but a little slow and not particularly surprising story. Some technical issues and by-the-books game design do take something away from the experience, but for those looking for a traditional Japanese role-playing game with plenty of heart, Star Ocean: The Divine Force is the game to get.
IGN - 7/10
The Divine Force isn’t necessarily a standout in this long-running series, but it is a much more successful effort to bring Star Ocean into the modern age than its predecessor. The revamped battle mechanics do wonders for its previously limited combat system, offering more freedom and flexibility than ever before. The main cast of characters is also charming, even if the world they are exploring and the animations that accompany them are far less captivating. I wish its interface issues were less obnoxious, but even so, The Divine Force at least proves that Square Enix’s sci-fi JRPG certainly deserved another shot.
Worth Playing - 5.5/10
I wanted to like Star Ocean: The Divine Force a lot more than I did. It has a lot of interesting ideas and concepts, and I'm a prime target for Star Ocean 2 nostalgia bait. The game didn't have the time or budget to do what it wanted to do, and what we have is a half-baked title that does very little well. The story is dull, the combat is repetitive and poorly balanced, and the unique features fall by the wayside as the game progresses. There are glimmers that something great could have been created, but it isn't the game that we ended up with. It's difficult to recommend The Divine Force to even die-hard JRPG fans, since the game's few strengths are eclipsed by its many flaws. Wait for a sale if you're curious, but otherwise, there are plenty of other better JRPGs to play this year.
Hardcore Gamer - 3/5
I couldn’t be more disappointed in how Star Ocean: The Divine Force turned out, to the point I’d rather go back and replay tri-Ace’s Infinite Undiscovery. You can take solace that The Divine Force is at least better than Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness as there are moments of intrigue, but they’re overshadowed by how severely underwhelming the overall package ended up.

I personally can't wait, it reminds me a lot of star ocean 4 from what I've seen especially with the android samurai much like bachstein. Hopefully it does well enough for another game or possibly star ocean 3 remake considering its set 200 years before star ocean 3 . I'm not bothered by visuals , too many games this gen and last gen have focused too heavily on graphics. Really hope there's more star ocean games in the future after disappointing star ocean integrity and faithfulness
If only the characters faces wouldn't be so aweful
Part of me really wants it cause its Star Ocean. But there's just something about it that makes me wanna look the other way instead. Maybe get it when its cheap.
I played the demo, which was pretty good. Didn't expect something different.
I have that baby downloaded and ready for tomorrow.
@Nindreal i dont think this will get lots of hate tbh
I was looking forward to this, but the demo turned it from a day one purchase, to a wait for a sale purchase.
Despite I've never played a Star Ocean game I've always wanted to but there's something about this one that doesn't feel quite right...for me it's another "I'll wait for a big sale".
Personally I enjoyed the demo a lot and I'm glad it's sorta reflected in the reviews. Combat didn't feel any where near as restrictive as one of the articles you guys made, made it seem. But my favorite part was just the little banter and dialogue the characters had. Raymond and Laeticia were such refreshing characters in just the demo alone after I had just put over a 100 hours going thru Xenoblade 3 with the most painfully generic cast of MCs
If this turns out to be Tri Ace's last game because of the massive losses they reported a little while ago, Im glad it came out stronger than their last. But I hope enough people support the game to where they can turn things around. I feel like SE just doesn't give them the proper budget and resources to reach their full potential, it'd be a massive shame to see them go out because of that
I liked the Demo so was already sold. No need for 3rd party reviews.
This will end up the same as Valkyrie Elysium where I had no needs for reviews because I liked the demo.
The fact that we got a new StarOcean and a new God of War is amazing. Good times.
@Nindreal I totally agree with you. So many negative press sheep looking to be part of crowd. It's like these people sometimes want gaming to fail lol I personally want to try all three games listed, on sale. Too many releases this fall. Not enough time or willingness to buy everything at full price.
@Agramonte Same, didn't let reviews deter me from Elysium this yr. The demo's sold me on both games.
People shouldn't be turned away by the graphics, this game looks great. Square Enix has been going very strong this year, but I'll bet there'll be some morons out there focusing on babylons fall and nfts instead.
Half of the vocal gaming community actually seem to hate enjoying games and having fun.
I'm buying the game but the hair!!!
Something about it really puts me off from playing it.
Most likely, I'll get it on sale.
I just started First Departure R
I personally don’t care much for reviews, although I will say that I do sometimes get excited about games that receive positive review scores. That being said, I am going to play Star Ocean: The Divine Force and judge it for myself. I personally find many reviewers to be a bit too picky at times, and I’ve found a lot of enjoyment in games that various reviewers have given scores of “6 out of 10” or “7 out of 10”. In many of those cases, I personally disagree with the scores given, as I find myself often giving the game a higher score in my own opinion in most cases. The same goes for movies and other formats of media entertainment. There have even been reviews that have given scores of “4 out of 10” that at first had me concerned, but then when I actually played the game or watched the movie, I was like, “Wow, I thought that was actually amazing!” So, really, reviews are just opinions to me in most cases, and while everyone certainly has the right to decide for themselves what they like and don’t like, I usually prefer to just play games I’m interested in and form my own opinions.
I think it’s fine to use reviews as a guideline if you’re unsure about a game and you’re wanting to be careful with money. Sometimes it can be very helpful. However, I don’t think it’s good to depend on reviews or just believe the reviews blindly either. A review is really just one person’s opinion, and I think that it’s important to develop one’s own opinions and decide for themselves what they like and don’t like, rather than just depend on reviews to “know what you should play”. Again, I think it’s fine to use reviews as guidelines in the case you’re not sure whether to spend your money on it, but I don’t think it’s good to always just go with what the reviews say either. I feel like if you always depend on reviews, you’re really giving up your own choices of deciding what you personally like and dislike. I don’t think giving up your own opportunities to form your own personal opinions out of fear of spending money on something you may or may not like is a good way to live life. It’s important for people to make their own decisions and discover for themselves what they personally prefer.
I have found many times that reviews are in line with what I think about a game, but I
I’ve also found many times that I end up disagreeing with various reviews and the scores that they give games. Either way, I just see reviews as opinions, and even if reviewers are pretty harsh on a game I usually prefer to form my own opinion — especially if it’s a game I’m interested in and have been anticipating. In the case of Star Ocean: The Divine Force, I’m going to be playing it no matter what, because I’m a longtime fan of the Star Ocean series, and I also want to support the development team who worked on it.
A wait for a sale for me since I'm getting Bayonetta friday.
At least reviewers gave it a chance, unlike Valkyrie. Note the same reviewers giving Bayonetta 3 10's, even though the game has the exact same "problems" with closed spaces.
Hardcore gamer: "I couldn’t be more disappointed in how Star Ocean: The Divine Force turned out..." Three out of five? I reckon he could have been 60% more disappointed.
It looks like a solid 7/10 game, and The Last Hope was a solid 7/10 game. I'll get it on sale for sure.
Only thing that I categorically don't like is the character models.
This game holds its own. I like Final Fantasy,Tales n anything with a good story that isn't turn based. The world's are nice ,especially the skies, but the story and characters really are really where it's at. The dialogue, for example the conversation between Ray n Elena over whether or not to give the people antibiotics because they're...yeah that really made me think. A few technical flaws , but nothing major ...it's a must play if you like the genre
God bless
