And that marks the end of 2022, folks – well, almost! Obviously there’s still a few hours to go, which means more time to make an attempt at downscaling that bulging backlog. There’s been so many games this year that it’s hard to know where to start, but reality check: 2023 is going to be even bigger. Time to wrestle back control of your playlist before it’s too late.

Spoilers for my unpublished personal picks, but Horizon Forbidden West is one of my favourite games of the year, so I really should spare a moment to wrap up the Platinum Trophy. Between that and games like JoJo's Bizarre Adventure All Star Battle R, I've got plenty to keep me occupied through the New Year celebrations and beyond. I'm looking forward to getting stuck in.
Robert Ramsey, Deputy Editor
I'm still playing through The Witcher 3 on PS5, but I'll be adding a bit of variation to the schedule by challenging friends at Guilty Gear Strive. Nothing like a sweaty fighting game session to round off the year.
Stephen Tailby, Associate Editor
I have been really enjoying my retro-tinged Christmas break, but I've also been wrapped up with Pokémon Scarlet. Despite its shortcomings, I'm having fun poking around a fresh region and finding new weirdos for my team.

The quest to shorten my backlog continues into the new year. A few of the shorter games from last weekend have been clocked, so now I'm introducing Valkyrie Elysium and Sonic Frontiers. Wish me luck with the latter.

There is a lot going on and not much of it makes sense to me, but I'm pushing on with my Death Stranding playthrough this week! The story may not be clicking with me properly yet, but I've never been so engrossed in the mechanics of traversing this harsh landscape. Who knew crossing a river could be so captivating? Oh, and Happy New Year!

One of my New Year resolutions is to start finishing my backlog. However, I got inspired by Jamie's Game of the Year retro list that I'll postpone such resolution a little further to play the Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series.

Happy New Year to all the Push Square readers out there! I’m going to be bringing in the new year by playing some easy-to-pick-up classics, like Tekken 7 and Sonic Origins. And, if time allows, I’d love to continue on my Tunic journey!
Graham Banas, Reviewer
Well, now I've got The Callisto Protocol done and dusted, I don't even know what I want to start next. The Quarry, maybe? I picked that up around Black Friday, and never even started it. Yeah, you know what, I'll be playing The Quarry. No better way to bring in the New Year!
Jamie O'Neill, Reviewer
My very most bodacious Christmas gift this year was the terrific Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection, so I'll be comparing the arcade to the SNES version of Turtles in Time, and relishing the Mega Drive's The Hyperstone Heist, long after the New Year's fireworks fizzle out.
Ken Talbot, Reviewer
I'm seeing in the New Year by navigating the social dynamics of meta humans in Marvel's Midnight Suns.
Scott McCrae, Reviewer
I'm going to end the year hanging about with the Midnight Suns. Maybe I'll use the extra days off to take a look at some of the games I missed from this year, like Prodeus.
Simon Fitzgerald, Reviewer
With the New Year drawing near I’m sure you are all asking yourselves, “Did I complete those 20 games I promised myself I would this year?” Well today is your last day to hit that goal; so I will be ending the year by squeezing in The Pedestrian, a pleasant four hour indie game that’ll leave me with plenty of time for a drink.
What games will be helping you usher in the New Year? Pick your poison in the comments section below, and enjoy the festivities if you're celebrating later today.

AC Valhalla & Origins. First off I don't think anybody who's into immersion should start with Odyssey because it's the worst of the 3 in that regard, and it's quite sad I did. Wasn't in a hurry to check out those 2 cause I was thinking they'd be similar to arcadey Odyssey with its no fall damage, ridiculous running animation, awful horses but boy was I wrong. I realized the more experienced Ubisoft Montreal made those immersive 2 and Quebec did Odyssey, part of the reason I got Valhalla quickly after being impressed by Origins. It's hard to notice repetition in assets in the 2 also compared to Odyssey, there's a city in Origins that looks well organized with roads like RDR2's Saint Denis. In Odyssey a million people are generated all over the repetitive places in close proximity like flies and it's hard to ride your horse without smacking them.
Valhalla is superb, with nice graphics, all new assets, better horses, it takes a lot of notes from RDR2 but of course since it's Ubisoft killing respect for their own games with a gazillion releases a year, people sleep on their talent plus there's the law of diminishing returns. The internet makes it seem Odyssey is the best but I'm really feeling the other 2. Aaaannd I'll probably continue Elden Ring also.
I'm playing cyberpunk 2077..i know its the game to hate on but i'm really enjoying it and it just looks and sounds superb. Evil west was a great no brains required distraction but i really need a good old deus ex type game to chill out with. Bring on 2023 and a happy new year to everybody..
Back to Asscreed Valhalla. I also will be playing ridge racer 2 along with some other stuff I’m trying to finish.
Tekken 6. I should also finish Yakuza 0, geez.
The Council and Steins Gate at the moment. The Council is kind of like a better and more complex Life is Strange. Steins gate…it’s a good story, but I’m 5 hours in snd I’ve had no opportunity to influence anything yet. Still, the Story and Characters have hooked me.
I'm playing the festive themed (and excellent) "Arkham Origins". How did this same team screw up "Gotham Knights" so badly? All the best for '23, everyone.
Just installed Judgement and Tony Hawk, but I may wait as have to finish Ghost of Tsushima, Death Stranding (anyone else tired of open world games?) and Guardians of Galaxy. All about half way through.
Trails From Zero still, thirty hours in now. I'm really starting to enjoy the setting, which has a totally different feel to the Sky trilogy. I love the lore building, slowly revealing a picture of a city caught between two major powers and riddled with corruption. Don't have a PS5 yet, but my sons did buy me a Ragnarok Dualsense for Christmas 😂
Im playing Final Fantasy Reunion and loving it, the combat missions are addictive and the graphics are a great upgrade. I brought Elden Ring in the current sale it was finally time to try it after taking a break after finishing Sekiro. The open word structure is interesting and just exploring
Freeing slaves and kicking ass in Assassin's Creed: Freedom Cry!
Plague Tale Requiem this weekend, waiting for Monster Hunter on gamepass
Gonna hopefully get close to (or even achieve) the Il Principe trophy on Assassins Creed: Brotherhood. Super janky as only old AC's are... but great game, really enjoying it.
Been really enjoying my F1 22 MyTeam playthrough recently so will maybe make some more progress with that but the main aim is to FINALLY play God of War Ragnarok. Been a long time coming for me, finishing off other games first but now the path is clear!
Haven't had much time to play games over Xmas (in a good way). Someone gifted me Devil May Cry 5 for Ps5 which was nice, I played the game ages ago so it'll be nice returning to it when I get the chance.
I should probably get back to Ringfit Adventure too cos Xmas ..... Or at least go for some very long walks 😅
Olliolli world for me. Its not as good as Rollerdrome but its still a lot of fun.
I might try to finish Diablo 3 campaign today as I'm right at the end. I've enjoyed playing it, but I don't think it's hooked me enough to bother with end-game content.
I picked up GT7 the other day, and I'm loving it. Driving games aren't usually my thing, but this one has me playing ‘one more race’ every time.
Just got the Platinum on God of War Ragnarok. Absolutely amazing game. Not sure what to play now. Haha.
@JudgeDredd Happy Birthday! Hope you have a good one.
Still plugging away at The Witcher interspersed with Monster Hunter Rise. May start Tactics Ogre.
I’ll be playing Sackboy: A Big Adventure. I’m playing one game at a time, so I’m really wanting to get it done, so I can move onto Metal Gear Solid V.
Elden Ring again and Faxanadu again!
@thefourfoldroot1 Stein’s Gate is quite daunting, but for me really worth it in the end! It’s a slow burn, but a good one. Game has several endings, which I didn’t see all of. The anime is really good adaptation too, which I watched after the game.
Just finished spiderman so starting up Horizon Zero Dawn. Played the opening half hour, it looks amazing so far.
@Nf157 I'm waiting for DmC5 to appear on ps plus, it's about time. And Sekiro. It never was below 50% off
Tomorrow my vacation starts, and it's a long time I don't take a vacation. Years. So I will have plenty of time to play in january, and I will use it hehe. I'm currently playing Assassin's Creed Syndicate (damn it plays good, light years from Unity), Spider-Man Miles Morales, The Witcher 3 PS5, Ys VIII Lacrimosa of Dana.
2022 was a very difficult year to me, so let's pray and hope 2023 will be better.
@misak192 Me too, for a long time. DMC5 is the only one I never played from the series.
It wouldn’t be Christmas without replaying Uncharted 2 for the hundredth time 😁 hearing the amazing theme song from the main menu brings back so many good memories.
Mostly playing WRC10 which I bought in the January sale.... Learning to play with manual gears because the semi automatic seems broken... Now that it's starting to click makes me want to go back and play all my racing games in manual... Also playing Isle of Man TT 2... Looking forward to 3.... Happy New Year Y'all....
A rare four days off in a row and I'm sitting here looking at my 'Want to Play' list slightly paralysed tbh!
I just picked up the platinum for Toem - a lovely short experience if anyone out there needs a palate cleanser.
Now I'm looking at the chunkier games on my list like Death Stranding, Cyberpunk, Pillars of Eternity II... but then I also have Death's Door, Tunic, Cult of the Lamb, Rollerdrome and Olli Olli World at the other end of the list. HELP!
I played these games. 😊
1. Megamind : Ultimate Showdown PS3
2. Racket Sports PS3
3. Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town PS4
Tonight I will play ACNH to celebrate New Year's Eve 2022.
Wandering around Fallout 4, ignoring Shaun for the 100th time. I’m aiming to platinum it this time around and hope to make it my number 100.
I am currently playing God of War Ragnarok
Hopefully I’ll get time to finish Klonoa 1, looking forward to trying the second one.
God of War Ragnarok and Crisis Core.
I’ve finished God of War Ragnarok but going back in to mop up a few bits and pieces. After that, I’m going to finally start Elden Ring and just pray that I’m skilled enough to enjoy it. Can’t wait to find out.
Happy New Year everyone! All the best for 2023.
The Witcher 3, of course
Happy New Year 🥂
@The_Pixel_King it's okay, you don't have to be that skilled to enjoy it. It's a myth. Sword and Seal, enjoy 😁
Wooooooo I will FINALLY be playing GoW Ragnorok on PS5 this weekend 🥳🥳
I just platinumed The Diofield Chronicle last night as my last PS4 game
Finishing up FF7 Crisis Core Reunion then watching football all Sunday 😎😎😎
Im still playing the amazing star wars jedi fallen order.the fantastic greedfall with all the dlcs.the instant classic indie hit hollow knight voidheart edition.and the excellent yakuza like a dragon.watching my Pittsburgh Steelers 💛🖤 play nfl 🏈 football.watching classic legendary 📺 tv sitcoms comedy in Sanford ans son.good times.saved by the bell.and martin.happy new year.word up son
Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion. Like others, this is my first time playing the game. It's been pretty enjoyable so far, and interesting seeing some of the characters before they turn into their FF7 versions.
Happy New Year everyone! I'll either be continuing my new playthrough of Persona 5 Royal or playing some matches of MW2. Both will have to wait until tomorrow as tonight we party!
Decided to return to Fallen Order for a second time since I completed it a little while ago on PS4. Fantastic game, doesn't make use of the PS5's power at all though. Loading times to respawn are around 20 to 30 seconds. Quite jarring.
My wife got me Sonic Frontiers and Evil West for Christmas. I started Sonic first and loving it.
I'll hopefully get a few blasts on that
Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Sonic Frontiers on my new PS5. Happy New Year!
I got Sonic Frontiers and Crisis Core Reunion on PS5 for Christmas so will mainly be playing those this weekend. Already put 13 hours into sonic frontiers and I'm having a blast so far, so much to explore and do.
On switch I will continue with Bayonetta 3, I have mixed feeling about the story of this one but its the gameplay keeping me invested.
And if I get time I will play some more High on life or Somerville on my series S.
Happy New Year everyone, have started Tales of Arise, it's been good so far.
I finally beat Chained Echoes (Xbox Series X), and I consider the game to be an absolute masterpiece. It’s one of the best JRPGs I’ve played in a very long time. I have a feeling this will be a game I play annually, probably around the Christmas time.
What I find so fascinating about the game is how there are many characters in the game and many join your party; however, they all have fleshed out backstories and motivations. Hell, even a particular merchant that is an NPC - if you talk to him every new place you visit, you’ll discover his history. Furthermore, their storylines get concluded as well. The fact that one individual made this game blows my mind. I can see why it took seven years to develop. The creator, Matthias Linda, really took his time with the writing and it shows in spades. I can’t wait to see what he does next.
I’m not sure what I want to start next. I have a plethora of games to choose from: Prodeus, Crisis Core Final Fantasy 7 Reunion (say that five times fast), Signalis, and Marvel Midnight Suns. The latter is tempting and calling my name, but we will see. I don’t want to start a super lengthy game because I want my focus to be on the Dead Space remake when it releases.
Despite starting the Witcher 3 twice around 5-6 years ago I only got a matter of hours in and got distracted by other releases and never went back.
I’ve been waiting for the next gen patch to properly sink my teeth into a proper run and I have to say I’m around 15 (ish) hours in and I can now see what the fuss is about.
I’ve barely scratched the surface and it’s superb.
Happy new year to all fellow gamers
Tokyo Xanadu Ex+ for me, a massively underrated Falcom game that's more than the sum of its parts! Then onto Mass Effect Legendary Edition to explore space & romance Miranda all over again
Hi there fellow gamers;
This weekend I´ll be continuing my Platinum playtrough of Jedi Fallen Order and some matches of DnF Duel as well as Guilty Gear Strive on my PS5 and continue playing The Fantastic Outer Worlds as well as the looker that is Forza Horizon 5 on my Series X.
May next year prove to be an amazing year for videogames.
Cheers, stay safe, stay warm and Happy New Gaming Year for us all
@JudgeDredd Hey there friend and Happy birthday!
Having made 38 myself this month it feels kinda weird, since I don´t feel that old..... Wich is a very good thing 😜
May we continue to be able to enjoy this great hobby of ours for more years to come.
Cheers and all the best
@3Above Hi there friend and congrats on getting your PS5.
Welcome to the Club.
Quick question: Is Diofeld any good? I was kinda curious about it, but there are so many games and so much time.
Cheers and happy gaming
Working two 12 hour shifts over the weekend so... nothing.
@RaZieLDaNtE Thank you! Feels good to finally join next (current) gen 😅
Diofield is a good "Beginners" RTS. Its enjoyable and not difficult but the story drops off at the end. Similar to the Story in The Order 1886 (which I also enjoyed).
There is a demo on PS4/PS5 that let's you play the first chapter so if you like the demo you will like the full game. There is also free story dlc planned for March I think.
The Witcher 3. This is only my second play through, the first being over 7 years ago when it first came out. Still a fantastic game. I love the new way of casting signs, it’s much more intuitive (luckily any muscle memory of the old system has long faded 😂). Also just started playing Marvel’s midnight Suns, which I’m enjoying so far.
PS5 - God of War: Ragnarok, Gotham Knights, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion, Ridge Racer 2
Switch - NieR:Automata The End of YoRHa Edition, Bayonetta 3
Xbox Series X - Sonic Frontiers, Dead or Alive 2 Ultimate, Sword of the Vagrant
I splurged on Evil West and am not disappointed. I love alternate history experience so I’ll be soaking that in along with another western, Weird West.
I’ve also contemplated picking up Tactics Ogre but I can’t seem to convince myself to purchase that or Crisis Core.
Only recently first played Dragon's Dogma, as was on sale on Switch. Excellent game and not sure why it passed me by back on PS3.
While the kids play on the PSVR they got for Christmas, I'll be waiting for the PS5 to be free so I can get back to a decidedly 2D Green Hill Zone in Sonic Origins. The irony isn't lost on me.
@playstation1995 An EPIC line up of entertainment content! 🍸
@gamiller1978 Tales of Arise is excellent! I platinumed it it early this year, you will enjoy it.
Probably continue Lost Judgment. The story has me super intrigued.
If my internet decides to cooperate I may play some Gmod VR with a friend.
After a full year of gaming without a ps5 because my old one broke at the end of 2021 I finally budged and bought my replacement as it was as simple as just ordering one on Amazon Australia and I got it 2 days later.
So I've missed out on quite a few games this year including Horizon Forbidden West which was what I picked up along side the ps5, ironic that it's cheaper to buy the console and the game separately over the bundle that only gives you a download code. I've played only up to the beginning of the first area and all I've been saying out loud repeatedly is DAT LOOK GOOD, like I knew the game looked good, but seeing it on a 4k screen with HDR is ridiculous, this is hands down the best looking game of the year and IMO better looking than Demon's Souls remake. I also forgot how impactful the adaptive triggers can be on my gaming experience compared to basic rumble when gaming on PC.
I'm also playing the Witcher 3 ps5 version which looks as good as my PC version with the big plus of my eardrums not getting destroyed because my PC fans are literally running at 2000 + RPM, which is one of the reasons why I craved getting a ps5 since I knew that issue doesn't even remotely exist on console. Also, cross progression is awesome, this is the first time I used it and it was seamless transitioning my 20 hour save over to ps5, I only wish achievements carried over, although I heard even if I transfer my ps4 save over the trophies won't auto pop. I'm not looking forward to getting 50 head shot kills with the crossbow on my death march playthrough.
I tried going to the notorious bandit camp where you cheese the enemies to not attack you but CDPR must've patched this out because the gate that leads to the camp closes on you if you walk in and can't be opened unless you finish the combat encounter. I missed a couple trophies because of the save transfer so I guess I can get this trophy on NG + and pump the difficulty down to very easy.
Finally I bought Atelier Ryza, quite literally the definition of cozy low stakes JRPG. It's a refreshing change of pace, just kick back go do some gathering, fight some enemies and craft items, if there were a JRPG world I'd wanna live in apert from Pokemon it would be the Atelier series.
Thanks for reading and have a happy new year, although it already is the new year for me, 2023 is absolutely stacked and could be the best year in gaming in over a decade, you got Sony 1st party and Square Enix's Final Fantasy, Xbox's Starfield and Nintendo's Legend of Zelda, something for everyone, it's impossible not to be excited. Happy gaming 😋
I’ll hopefully finish colisto protocol and the start saint kotar.
I’d like to finish up Steelrising, which has been a solid souls-like but in its last quarter has turned into a very talky side questing rpg…not quite what I was expecting but I’m digging it. Happy New Year!
LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game (PS2) - Finally starting on Episode III. Progress has been slow due to limited access to the tv nowadays. This is why I prefer to game on laptop/handhelds
Rayman Jungle Run (Windows Phone) - Made it to the final stretch here as well.
Age of Sparta (Windows Phone) - Haven't played for a few days now, need to get back to this.
I’ll be doing some squats…in Crisis Core Reunion!
Not really. I’ve long stopped trying, but will finish the game today.
Kena on PS5. Really enjoying it
@3Above @JudgeDredd Hey guys and thanks for the tip.
I keep forgeting that SE is making demos available for people to try them out.
And since I´m still playing Triangle Strategy on my Switch,
I haven´t pick it up yet.
Will try the demos soon.
Cheers and Happy New Year mates
@3Above
Awesome. Great game, hope you enjoy it as much as I have.
Playing Rise of the Tomb Raider on PS5, yeah catching up lol. Also toying with various games on Game Pass, like Octopath Traveler.
Be safe and Happy New Year! Go Ukraine!
Still exploring Skyrim, about halfway on the trophies and I began collecting the artifacts, I forgot how good the factions quests were.
My ps5’s power supply took a dump on me (after having it for like 24 days) so I’m playing mostly Persona 5 Royal on my Series S and a load of Marvel Snap.
Gonna send it in for repair (already got the pre-paid box n all that) Monday.
I really, really miss this thing already =(
@JudgeDredd Happy Birthday!
@3Above definitely playa.haha.word up son
Hopefully finish up The Witcher 3 over the next couple of days then will begin Elden Ring.
Been mostly on the Steam Deck, playing RE7, Xcom 2 and Micro Machines. Having a great time with it, good bit of kit IMO.
@playstation1995 lets go ravens! word up son!
@nomither6. Nah playa.pittsburgh Steelers 💛🖤 all the way.word up son

Happy New Year, fellow filthy gamers!
GRID Legends this weekend because No Man's Sky is just too dull. Happy New Year:)
Happy new year to you all!
Much to my suprise, I picked up "Tales of Arise" in the sale and haven't been able to stop playing it since, its an excellent jrpg.
