We don't know about you, but we think 2023 has been an amazing year for PlayStation gaming thus far. We've had highly rated blockbusters, we've had smaller hits, and perhaps most importantly, we had a lot of variety.
Of course, the year is far from over — and the second half of 2023 has serious potential as well — but now that we're in July, we wanted to offer a look back at the last six months or so. We've gathered together the editorial team to list their favourite PS5 and PS4 games of 2023 so far, and we'd love to hear about your own picks once you're done reading.

Miasma Chronicles
Miasma Chronicles is a really exciting next step for developer The Bearded Ladies and shows how far the studio has come since Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden, which is a shame as it seems to have come and gone rather quietly. It tells another compelling sci-fi tale in a post-post-apocalyptic world and smartly evolves the fusion of narrative, stealth, exploration, and turn-based combat while introducing a whole new cast of weird and wonderful characters. I'm still holding out hope for DLC, as this is one world I'd like an excuse to return to.
Diablo 4
Diablo 4 is an endless black hole of content that corrects my biggest issues with Diablo 3 and, I think, sets a new benchmark for service games moving forward. The combat is incredible, and it just offers so much variety in terms of playstyle, builds, theory-crafting, and lore. More than any of that, though, it finally feels like a service game that's for me. I've bounced off virtually every other game to bear that moniker (with Destiny 2 getting the most consistent attention), and Diablo 4 finally feels like something worth keeping on a slow burn. I'm looking forward to the expansions already and have so much left to do in the base game, which is a rare and happy gaming situation for me to be in.
Aliens: Dark Descent
I only just got done with the review for this one, so recency bias could be a factor here, but counterpoint; I can't stop playing Aliens: Dark Descent. Playing on Nightmare now for the Platinum, each mission really starts to feel like a true survival horror experience, where every shot counts and every chance encounter could be your last. Dark Descent manages that despite being a real-time tactical strategy game played from an isometric viewpoint; traditionally not the scariest perspective. The story is no slouch either and tells a tale that sits comfortably amongst the best told in the wider Alien universe. It's unique, faithful, incredibly compelling, and low-key might be in the lead for my own personal GOTY.

Resident Evil 4
Capcom's latest remake is my favourite game of 2023 so far, and it's going to take a lot to top it. Faithfully bringing back the classic PS2 experience and then expanding upon it with new content and vastly upgraded graphics, Resident Evil 4 can be considered a masterpiece all over again. It's an outstanding experience packed with improved combat and set pieces, coupled with great audio and optimal PS5 DualSense controller support. Single player games in 2023 don't get much better than this.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was one of the best games of 2019, so it only makes sense its bigger and even better sequel is also in the running for 2023. I love a game with a good hub area that houses characters you can repeatedly return for new dialogue and quests, and Rambler's Reach provides that. When you're not at home, though, much grander planets house vast stretches of land ripe for exploration and a fun story worth seeing through to the end. Along with more in-depth combat and lightsaber stances, it's easily one of the most enjoyable experiences on PS5 to date.
Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores
I don't think Horizon Forbidden West is anywhere near as good as its Metacritic average suggests, so its PS5 DLC Burning Shores came as a very pleasant surprise. With a more condensed map and story, the expansion got to the point in a much brisker fashion, and it allows Burning Shores to remain engaging throughout. I loved the addition of sidekick Seyka, and the lush grounds of Los Angeles were great to explore, with more interesting side quests to follow and optional activities to find. Of course, the third instalment will return to the vast open world of another famous USA city, but Burning Shores proves the concept can work just as well on a smaller scale.

Like a Dragon: Ishin!
Japanese games have dominated my 2023 so far, and they don't get much more Japanese than Like a Dragon: Ishin!. I had lost hope in this samurai spin-off ever coming West, and so actually playing it (and reviewing it) back in February almost felt surreal. It's a great game — if a bit grindy at times — with an engrossing setting and some superb story moments. After so many years of praying for a localisation, I dare say the wait was worth it.
Trails to Azure
I started my Trails journey with Trails of Cold Steel, but I was always aware that the preceding Crossbell games — Trails from Zero and Trails to Azure — were extremely highly rated amongst fans of the series. Thankfully, NIS America saw fit to localise both titles, and Azure in particular blew me away. It's an RPG sequel that pulls out all the stops, delivering on every plot point and character moment that Zero expertly sets up. Azure has to be one of my favourite Trails games, and that's incredibly high praise.
Final Fantasy 16
Final Fantasy as a series helped shape my taste in games when I was a kid, and honestly, I just wanted Final Fantasy 16 to be memorable for the right reasons. The last mainline game I truly enjoyed was Final Fantasy 12, but 16 managed to rekindle my passion for Square's franchise. While in many ways it is a drastic departure, the adventures of Clive Rosfield really resonated with me in terms of storytelling, world building, and combat design. It ended up having a lot of what I look for in a Final Fantasy game, evoking that unmistakable aura of the classics.

Honkai: Star Rail
I’m cheating because it’s technically not out on PS5 yet, but I’ve already poured an absurd number of hours into Honkai: Star Rail on mobile. HoYoverse already has one gigantic live service hit under its belt with Genshin Impact, but I think in time the bitesized nature of this turn-based RPG will make it an even bigger success. The writing is overwrought and the sheer number of overlapping systems mean you really need to embed yourself in it to understand how to get the most out of it, but there’s already so much content in this graphically gorgeous gacha – and it’s barely had chance to blossom yet.
PSVR2
Yeah, I’m cheating again – sorry, Rob! I know there are very legitimate criticisms regarding PSVR2’s upcoming slate of software, and I echo many of them. That said, I don’t think we should overlook what a tremendous upgrade this new piece of hardware is compared to its predecessor. While my use of the headset has slowed quite a lot over the past few months for a variety of reasons, I had an outstanding time immersing myself in Horizon: Call of the Mountain’s idyllic world, and I’ve generally enjoyed faffing around with the upgraded ports, like Beat Saber and Pistol Whip. I know the jury’s still out to some degree, but I’d still say playing through PSVR2’s launch lineup has been one of the highlights of my gaming year so far.
Street Fighter 6
I would consider myself a casual fighting game player at best, but I’m a relatively engaged one. I’ve never missed a Street Fighter, for example, and I’m generally up to date with my Mortal Kombat and Tekken, too. Street Fighter 6, which was one of my most anticipated games of the year, has utterly blown me away, however. After the dour launch of Street Fighter 5, publisher Capcom has course corrected in the best possible way: this game is absolutely bursting with things to do, and I’ve enjoyed exploring the zany single player RPG campaign just as much as the one-on-one online brawling. I do get frustrated when I lose, but you need those lows to appreciate the supreme highs when you win.

Final Fantasy 16
I've tried and failed to get onboard with Final Fantasy many times, but this entry really resonated with me. The wonderful real-time combat feels fantastic. The boss battles are amazing set pieces, especially the spectacular Eikon fights that give God of War a real run for its money. Even the story and characters have won me over. Final Fantasy 16 has its flaws, but all told, I'm hard pushed to think of a more memorable, satisfying experience I've had with a game this year.
Humanity
In a year bursting with big budget titles soaking up all the limelight, Humanity deserves to be remembered. Enhance Games quietly released this brilliant puzzle game in May, riffing on Lemmings-like gameplay with a modern, surreal twist. The deceptively challenging puzzles, ingeniously simple gameplay, and visual absurdity onscreen amass into something really wonderful. It feels quintessentially PlayStation, too — an unusual, experimental, timeless game that feels like a long lost sibling of LocoRoco, Patapon, and echochrome.
PowerWash Simulator
I keep coming back to PowerWash Simulator. It arrived back at the very end of January on PS5 and PS4, and since then, I've dipped in and out between bigger games. There's just something really soothing about it that's hard to put my finger on. All you do is blast pressurised water at filthy buildings, but it's inexplicably relaxing and rewarding. The thing is, objectively, I don't think this is anywhere near the best PS5 games of 2023, but for me, I can't seem to resist its low key charm. It's so peaceful.

Powpowpow, I went for Aliens, Dead Space and Octopath Traveler 2.
All great games!
It's insane that it's only June and that's the list of best games. It could easily be our Game of the Year vote!
I have not actually played any 2023 releases on PlayStation yet, as I am still playing Ragnarok, but Final Fantasy 16 will be my next ps5 purchase for sure.
But counting everything, my favourite game releases so far this year have to be Zelda and Wo Long. Both awesome but for different reasons
Wow, going through that list and for first time in years i havent played much so all 3 of my choices were vr. Did play hogwarts but didnt finish it got bored about half way through. Havent finishes final fantasy yet. Going to pick few others cheap at somepoint. But yea strange not much been must buy for me. Probably getting old and not much gaming time these days.
Not many games from PlayStation Studios on this list, and they have no chance of getting into the top 3.
I was most surprised by how much I enjoyed Octopath Traveller 2. It was a journey I didn't want to end. Other than that this year has not really impressed me. Here's hoping Armored Core or Spider Man delivers.
Mine is a little anaemic at the moment. As ever i am struggling to keep up. So for now i have to pick Resident Evil 4 remake, Hogwarts Legacy, and Final Fantasy 16
Although i have octopath traveller 2 and Like a dragon ishin which could easily get on the list once played
I have no doubt Dead Space will be up there once i get around to picking it up. Have to confess that as its an EA game ive been waiting on a sale despite the original being one of my favourite games of the PS3 generation. Just feel it has a larger print run than the likes of Octopath and Trails From Azure / Into Reverie so less urgency to pick it up
Games are too long these days 😅
Final Fantasy XVI for me. Really enjoying it so far. Hogwarts and Jedi Survivor I thought I'd have played by now, but for some reason FF16 was the game that made me want to play it on release.
And obviously... Zelda TotK has dominated my play time, as the first game this year to really excite me, but we can't vote for that here 😁😁😁
It's a great list so far and my backlog is still growing because of that 🤦
Dead island 2 has been the only release I’ve played so far this year that I wanted to play for longer than 30 minutes at a time, so dead island 2 is my favourite I guess.
Jedi Survivor is still my GOTY so far, RE4 Remake is awesome too, I'm still quite mixed on FFXVI, I'm about 30 hours in.
Dang I really need to play more of the 2023 games I've picked up. For now the only ones I've played are MH Rise, Hogwarts and FFXVI
MH Rise is the most fun I've had so far this year but if it doesn't count as a 2023 game, FFXVI is the next best one and was a very close 2nd. I don't know if drowning in good games is a good thing or not but I'm glad to have it lol
Octopath traveler 2.dead space remake.and final fantasy 16 are my 3 favorite game so far.but spiderman 2 will be in there for sure.word up son
My top 3 this year so far would be Death Stranding (47 hours) since I completed it early this year. So memorable, visually dazzling, and really resonated with me for weeks after. Like many I almost gave up in the first few hours, but then it all started to click, and I was strapped in for one of my favorite gaming experiences ever.
Diablo 4 (70 hours so far, in the end game now), Blizzard has really built an amazing framework for a live service game where you get to play your way, excited to see the game advancing and improving for years to come.
And of course Hogwarts Legacy (120 hours) which has to be one of the best RPG games ever and easily my GOTY so far. Surprised to see it absent from the above picks.
Looking at this list, it occurs to me that I’m still mostly playing Switch, or last year’s games. 😂 As such, my three aren’t so much my favorites so far this year, but the only new releases so far this year for me on PlayStation. So, FFXVI, Star Wars, and Tchia.
Final Fantasy 16
It's the only game I've really played on PS5 this year so far
Nothing so far
Diablo 4 is all i thought i would care about as Diablo is a top 3 gaming franchise all time for me and i am loving it to pieces. 10/10 for me and a game that shows Blizzard still got it. But i must say Street Fighter 6 has impressed me like no other fighting game in a long long time. I bought Diablo 4 on Series X. Got SF6 on PS5. I thought the time split would be even more in favor of D4 but SF6 already has 19 hours of my life on it and i am starting to win again. Gold tier finally. I retired from playing competitively on fighting games a long time ago as it used to be one of my favorite genres. Got older and just stopped playing them, but i love competing, and SF6 is a gem. Those are my only 2 votes as i have yet to buy FF16 as i am way to involved with Diablo 4 and will be for years and years to come. 😀
1. Final Fantasy 16 (New Game Plus sealed the deal)
2. Diablo 4 (Will be playing this off and on all gen)
3. Resident 4 Remake (Would be #1 had it not been a remake)
4. Dead Space Remake (Still special)
5. Hogwarts Legacy (My biggest surprise)
Humanity was a very good surprise
Resident Evil 4 Remake so far is my favorite
1) Diablo 4
2) Hogwarts legacy
3) PGA road to the masters
@kyleforrester87
You and I have similar tastes - in terms of your selection mine was identical apart from replacing Octopath with Diablo (although Octopath does intrigue me).
My favourite PS5 game of the year so far is easily Resident Evil 4 for me. It looked absolutely gorgeous and was so much fun to play through such a timeless campaign. After that, it’s probably Street Fighter 6 and the hugely underrated Octopath Traveler II.
Though, for clarity, I should say that I’ve not yet played FF16 or Diablo IV. Both of which could crack my top three.
@Lumic I’m sure Diablo would be on my list, I’m just waiting for a suitably empty schedule to get into that, since I’m also wrestling with Zelda over on the Switch. Octopath is really nice, much better than the first one.
For me, my favorites go in no specific order:
Dead Space Remake
Resident Evil 4 Remake
Final Fantasy 16
Diablo 4
Octopath Traveler II
I need to buy the Burning Shores DLC. HFW is one of my all time favorite PlayStation exclusives - and I’ve gotten the platinum for it and HZD, so I definitely need to jump back into this world. Unfortunately, there are just too many games with too little time.
Hogwarts Legacy
Diablo 4
FFXVI
These are the only games released this year that I've played. I've still yet to finish both Diablo 4 and FFXVI but I honestly enjoyed playing Hogwarts Legacy much more than the other two.
@ApostateMage Diablo 4 not a Diablo 3 beater then?
Diablo 4 for me is the biggest surprise so far, I didn't like the beta and hadn't played D3 in years but enjoyed it a lot. Endgame isn't the greatest for now, but it's certainly a very good foundation and still worth the price. Yakuza Ishin was marketed as a remake, but it certainly didn't look and feel that way and while the game ultimately was still good, I was a bit disappointed. Hogwarts was what I thought it would be, pretty standard RPG with Harry Potter-skin. FF16 was just an immense disappointment to the point that I'm not even mad, I care so little. Ultimately for me this year has been a bit of a disappointment in terms of new releases.
@kyleforrester87 It's hard to say because I'm still only in act 2 and I've only played the rogue class so far. I do have so many fond memories from Diablo 3, though.
Gotta go with RE4, though I’m still working on FF16. Octopath Traveler II is up there too (it’s actually my Switch GOTY so far).
Rssident Evil 4 remake and Street Fighter VI are the only ps5 games I've played this year so far. Both have been excellent, especially as I hadn't played resi 4 before and I hadn't played a 2D fighter in 4ish years.
I've been meaning to play Humanity, the demo of which I liked but I just haven't played. FFXVI's demo was also great but I'm all tied up with Zelda to jump in.
Looking forward to Armoured Core and Shadow of the Erd Tree though. And FF7 part two if its this year (probably not which is fine by me)
3 choices wasn't enough! Loved Hogwarts and Jedi, it was a hard choice between Dead Space and RE4, and I haven’t even started FFXVI. And we’re only halfway through! Even with remakes, it’s been a stellar year so far
Resident Evil Village VR for me, what a absolutely jaw dropping, white knuckle experience!
RE4, Hogwarts Legacy, and Humanity for me right now, I suppose, with just Playstation titles. I couldn’t pick FF16, given I’ve not played much of it yet, but I could see FF16 challenging TotK for my GotY choice, based on the little time I’ve invested in it so far. The fact that it’s July and I’ve got a full top 20 list for the year already though does seem a bit insane to me. My top 20 list for this year halfway in is probably about as strong as my year end lists for 2020, 2021, or 2022 too. Maybe not 2021. That may be comparable, but certainly stronger than 2020 and 2022.
Amnesia would probably be my personal choice.
Since I have most of these on the switch instead, I picked of course, Afterimage, which is excellent! I put everything on pause for two months just playing and replaying that. Its the most fun i've had with a metroidvania since Hollow Knight. I might like it as much as Ender Lilies.
I haven't even touched Octopath two or live a live and got both on drop day.
I think i'm gonna jump into LaL right now though.
On NG+ of FF16 and I'd have to put it around 13th or 14th in the rankings of best FF games. It really lacks the charm of the older games.
Resident Evil 4
Dead Space 2
Dead Island 2
FF16, RE4, LaD Ishin.
RE4 Remake and Final Fantasy XVI. Also bought the FFVI Remaster, P4 Golden and planning to add Octopath Traveler 2 soon
@get2sammyb yeah, and I saw someone post how this year has been absolutely terrible for gaming and how nothing good has come out. Out of all those games, if you can’t find 3 that you like, you’re probably not into gaming anymore. That being said, Diablo IV, SF6, and Jedi: Survivor are my top choices so far this year.
Dead Island 2, only other game that interests me is the aliens game and i haven't had the chance to play that yet
Payday 3 is my most anticipated.
I knew diablo 4 and ff16 would be great but my biggest surprise was Wo long, really enjoyed that.
But just to much to like this year sonfar, dead space , RE4, Village in VR
Man, Street Fighter 6 is getting robbed so far!
@AhmadSumadi There's so much other stuff we could have included, too, plus we're obviously not including other platforms here as well (which would extend the list a lot).
Like you say, if you can't find one or two things to enjoy, then you're either not looking or not really into games anymore.
Hogwarts and Star Wars are on my list, but I haven't played them yet. Going to go with Sonic Origins Plus as it's the only PS5 game I've purchased this year.
Street Fighter VI keeps me coming back for more and easily takes the crown. It does old and new things right.
Enjoying XVI really a lot but not loving it, it is too tyrannical in its pace, like a Persona game.
Octopath II was superb though not really innovating anything.
Street Fighter 6 is an honest to God masterpiece. I can't get enough of that game. In second place though I think it's either Jedi Survivor or FF16. Hogwarts Legacy comes in at a close 4th...which is pretty crazy because I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Hogwarts.
A very great year indeed!
Hard to say with so many amazing releases. I will say that Forspoken is somewhere on the list of best games released so far this year though. It really clicked with me.
Wo Long is my GOTY so far. Super fun combat that I just couldn’t put down. Dead Space Remake is a close second (although I need to finish it, because Wo Long). Resident Evil 4 Remake was great too, but by the island I became sick of shooting people…
Time for Wo Long DLC!! And ARMORED CORE in August!!!! Holy sh*t this year is crazy…
1. Street Fighter 6
2. Resident Evil 4 remake
3. Like a Dragon: Ishin
4. Final Fantasy XVI
5. Wanted: Dead
FF16 was SO CLOSE but horrific pacing, dropped or brushed over plot points and an incredibly underwhelming ending significantly hampered the experience for me.
Hogwarts Legacy had a painfully forgettable plot but a great setting and combat that kinda put it above FF16 for me. Granted I played this on PC where it was significantly cheaper.
Does Chained Echoes count? It released in December 2022 and I played it on game pass for PC rather than PlayStation but god damn is it a great classic-style JRPG.
Only other PlayStation-releasing game I plan to play this year is Baldur’s Gate 3. Again on PC though. The rest are Starfield, Fallout London and the Super Mario RPG remake.
FF16, RE4 tie with Jedi: Survivor and Hogwarts Legacy, all make good use of PS5 tech, all made in 2023 not in 2013. D4 is big disappointment, I expected more from Ishin!, I tried to finished but the regular combat, boring story and horrible graphics was enough, not a bad game if you adore 2013 games. A mention apart is Forspoken for being the only one able to run in 120Hz mode in quality mode with a superb combat system, the story and the protagonist are terrible, haha...
I've only been able to play Persona 3 & 4. Would have liked to vote for Octopath II but demos don't count.
I got WWE 2K23 for WarGames, and it delivered big. I enjoyed most of the story mode, and Universe is better once I spent an hour tweaking it. But I always feel like I'm fighting to keep a match at a pace I want. Still, very happy with the purchase.
Same with Hogwarts, which I have nearly finished. I will absolutely play this again - it may not have the same juice as AC: Odyssey or Saint's Row 4 for me (permanent installs) but I really like what they did with the game and the license.
Then AEW dropped and blew both games out of the water. This is my No Mercy sequel. I know it's not 1:1, nor should it be. While the package is a bit thin compared to 2K, the gameplay is divine, and the only game I've played in years when I can enjoy a loss. I "worked" a match with another player, went about 10 minutes, but the unsaid back and forth and allowing each other a little shine and comebacks was magical. Can't wait to see what they add to it going forward.
FF16 didn't make my 3.
3rd jedi Survivor
2nd Hogwarts legacy
1st Resi 4 remake
@Bentleyma I really enjoyed it too. It gets too much hate. I feel it's a 6 or 7 our of 10. Good not great but not as bad as many suggest
1. FF16
2. Hogwarts legacy
3. Diablo 4
Haven't played burning shores yet, that would likely take d4's spot.
It's been great so far this year though!
It's easy for me: 1. Resident Evil 4, 2. Dead space, 3. Jedi Survivor
Only played 2 off this list, shame Dredge didn't get a mention as it is excellent and makes my top 3 so far. FFXVI, Jedi or SF6 next for me.
1 - RE 4 remake
2 - LaD Ishin
3 - Dredge
Hogwarts Legacy, as it's the only one I actually bought.
FF16 by far. Finished it yesterday. Fantastic game.
For the first six months of this year, I've been playing games from previous years. Picked up my first release of '23 a few weeks ago (held out for the physical release), & am loving it - Miasma Chronicles (hi, Khayl, always nice to have someone else enjoying the games that I do!). I really enjoyed MYZ (what a stab in the heart it was when I found Farrow's tombstone in MC), & yet this game manages to improve on all the gameplay elements. Cannot recommend it highly enough!!
1.Final Fantasy 16
2.Resident Evil 4 Remake
3.Dead Space Remake or Hogwarts Legacy
It's been a crazy good year so far and it doesn't seem to be slowing down. Not sure if I can keep up!
This year is quantity over quality. Nothing here is touching the quality of gow ragnarok, horizon fw and ofc elden ring
Had to give up on Jedi Survivor due to the graphical performance, screen tearing etc. with performance mode running poorer than quality for me on PS5, which surprises me that it is held in such high esteem. Have the problems been resolved?
@Max_the_German dont worry, spiderman 2 will be there by the end of the year lol
@frankmcma I'm not too surprised Hogwarts didn't make the cut. Let's not forget the whole anti JK Rowling debacle. I imagine since the the big boycott failed to prevent insane sales of Hogwarts Legacy, game journos will simply ignore it in any game awards discussions.
FF16, Hogwarts Legacy and RE4 Remake for me
Have to say, as someone that bounced off Diablo 3 early days and just couldnt get back into it,Diablo 4 has me by the short and curlys.and along with forthcoming Baldurs Gate 3 ,theres nothing else that has much interest for me so far or upcoming.Resi 4 remake was great fun too.
1. Resident Evil Village VR2
2. The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners - Tourist Edition
3. Red Matter 2 or Walkabout Mini Golf
There's almost no way the second half of the year will be able to top the first half for me, and I'm ok with that. 2023 has been SOLID!
All PSVR2 games for me! They are just so much more fun than regular games.
1. Puzzling Places
2. Beat Saber
3. Pistol Whip
would be my top 3.
I've only played two on that list, Hogwarts & SFVI, but voted for P4G Remaster as I have it on the Switch. It's weird thinking about it, I pretty much only play FarCry6 and Jurassic Park Evolution 2 still, not much on the PS5 interests me at the moment
