Let's get right into it: Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is a really, really good show. Judged alone, it's one of the hardest-hitting anime we've watched in quite some time, but put it alongside Cyberpunk 2077, and it's a near perfect companion piece. This isn't some half-arsed video game adaptation scrapped together by people who don't really care — it's a full-on celebration of the core themes and hyperviolent action that defines Cyberpunk as a property.
Set in the very same Night City as CD Projekt Red's open world RPG, the show follows a troubled young man named David Martinez. He's stuck in a rut, already part of the rat race, being put through education by his well-meaning mother. But as is the case with almost everything that happens in Night City, a single bloody incident kickstarts a chain of events that spiral beyond the reach of a normal person.
Edgerunners is ten episodes long, and things move quickly. It's a dense and detailed anime, a feast for the brain as well as the eyes. It also has a heavy focus on the concept of cyberpsychosis — the violent mental breakdown that typically occurs when someone replaces too much of their organic body with machinery. It's a concept that plays a role in 2077 as well, but it's explored to a much greater degree here, acting as the morbid, but fascinating central pillar of the plot.
Said plot twists and turns through just about every 25-minute episode. The show's often electric pacing means that you're never allowed to dwell on a specific story beat for too long, which adds an unapologetically brutal tone to proceedings. Night City simply doesn't give a damn about any of these characters — and that's the real horror of Cyberpunk. Watching David's struggles unfold is genuinely gripping at times.
Edgerunners is rated 15, but it revels in depictions of extreme, bordering on absurd, violence. The opening scene of the first episode is a fair indication of what to expect, as a cyberpsycho turns tens of police officers into paste. The show starts exactly as it means to go on — and the action only gets more engrossing as the series introduces a colourful cast of brilliantly designed characters.
Speaking of which, David and his eventual allies can't really be considered the 'good guys'. Like any Night City mercenaries looking to make a name for themselves on the streets, they're at the beck and call of morally bankrupt bigshots. It's a nightmarish setup, but that makes the story all the more engaging; you're rooting for David after all he's been through, but you know that he's on the brink of selling his soul.
It's not just the themes of Cyberpunk that Edgerunners captures so well — it's also the look. Supremely talented Japanese outfit Studio Trigger (Kill la Kill, Darling in the Franxx, and many more) has crafted a neon-soaked thrill ride here. From the immediately recognisable character designs to the explosive use of colour — and the many direct environmental references to Cyberpunk 2077 — it's a joy to behold. A bit busy for some, perhaps, in the way that the animation conveys speed and moments of bloodshed, but again, it's hard to argue against it being a perfect exaggeration of the source material.
And it's not like there aren't slower moments — sometimes at the expense of show's pacing. Animation ain't cheap, and so you're bound to notice when the direction screeches to a halt, and you're left looking at a still shot as characters converse. Some of these scenes can linger just a touch too long, and they start leaning into awkward territory — but generally speaking, all is forgiven when the next gunfight rolls around.
Our only real complaint can be aimed at two later episodes, both of which feel exceedingly slow compared to the chaos of previous outings. The show's momentum comes dangerously close to being stopped dead during these exposition dumps, but there's just enough character-based intrigue to keep you watching. And, of course, these episodes are ultimately building up to what is one hell of a finale.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is a triumph — and a testament to what can be done with video game adaptations when the people involved are so closely tied to the source material. Studio Trigger's typically excellent animation style brings Night City and its insane inhabitants to life like never before, and brutal, gripping story beats punctuate the show's eye-popping pace. An absolute must-watch if you're a Cyberpunk 2077 fan, but even if you aren't, Edgerunners stands on its own as a fantastic, emotional rollercoaster of an anime.

It looks ace — Can I jump into this having not played the game at all? That was the case with Arcane, and that show was fantastic.
@Andee Yep, 100%. If you know the game, you'll recognise all kinds of little details, but this can be viewed as an entirely standalone anime if you like.
I went in with zero expectations, not being a huge anime fan I was blown away by this thing.
Again could have been because I didn’t think I would love it but getting ready for a rewatch now. Highly recommended!!!
The german dub is also absolutely hilarious containing lots of superficial youth lingo which is just embarassing.
BUT it catches the atmosphere of Night City perfectly so I'll still recommend it
@ShogunRok thanks for the great review, really loved the show. Will we also get a review on that new Tekken anime? Feel like that one fell under the radar unfortunately.
@tameshiyaku It feels like the opportunity might have passed by now, but never say never. I do want to give it a look at some point, time permitting.
Will watch it next time I sign up for Netflix, whenever the new season of The Witcher releases. So I'll be watching on my Switch Pro.
Maybe I should give this anime a try. While I was dissapoined by the (initial) technical state of CP2077 I actually kinda like the world/lore
I got two more episodes left I plan to finish it tonight. They absolutely nailed it from what I've seen though. Just what the doctor ordered really for this license as a whole. It's great no matter if you've played the game or not and if you are coming fresh I'd be shocked to hear anyone not be at least tempted to jump into 2077 after watching Edgerunners.
The Show highlights the world of Cyberpunk, which is its best asset for sure.
@Korgon Totally. I have 3 left and will finish this weekend. It's so fantastic that I'll definitely pick up the game at some point.
It seems like most people think it's excellent, I'm in the smaller camp that thinks it's okay. I don't have anything really bad to say about it but I figured out where the story was going after two episodes and the amount of time the anime covers is a bit too much for my liking. The story and characters are great, but the time with them wasn't enough to hit me emotionally compared to other people.
The visuals and the music are definitely the highlights and at the end of the day it's given me the itch to revisit 2077, and from the look of the Steam charts, it's succeeded in bringing people back to the Cyberpunk world which is great because I love it. If CDPR sticks to the quality shown in Edgerunners, then in a few years' time the issues with 2077 will be a distant memory.
So I do recommend people to watch Edgerunners. My biggest issue is I would have liked it to be given time to breathe but as I said, I'm in the minority which makes it okay. I really think that won't affect a lot of people's opinions. It's a great entry for newcomers.
I think it starts really strong with a nice story and characters but it totally ***** the bed on the last 2 episodes by going waaaaay over the top, but that's Studio Trigger for you, they're basically the studio that churns shows that look like the parodies you see about anime.
Should've gone with studios that are more used to mature stories like Production I.G. or Madhouse.
I need to check it out. Heard lots of good things about it.
@Athrum haha, I did enjoy the entire show but totally agree with your take on studio trigger, making Animes according to the outsiders view of anime. To me it felt like they held back some of their usual craziness.
Also thought trigger delivered one of the weakest entries to the star wars visions anthology with the twins.
As someone who playe the game to the fullest, I was mesmerized with the representation they achieved. Top class. An amazing story that runs parallel to the game, adding to it. The atention to details, the action, top notch. The soundtrack using the same as the game (as they share the same radio stations), a great work.
Why watch it in English? It's an anime
@tameshiyaku Haha yeah, the end of that Star Wars visions episode was insane.
Probably the best thing Trigger has made since Kill La Kill. Not a huge fan of the studio, but the animation quality, storytelling, and action sequences are all pretty excellent so far. Looking forward to seeing the rest of it.
@TeapotBuddha The manic action is definitely here in spots, but it doesn't overwhelm the show as it does in many of Trigger's projects, which makes it work better overall, IMO.
It was a fun watch but would have been nice to see more of the npc's from the game.
@bremkat35 Because a lot of people(myself included) don't like to always juste look down the screen and miss a lot of small details. My eyes can focus on all the images and not read all the times. Personal preferences.
I would’ve loved a DLC expansion with David playable. But that’d never happen. Anime was so good. Fresh and stylish with great music and lovable characters. I’m definitely rewatching again soon
I like that you didn't give it a review score, maybe this site should do that with game reviews, it would actually get more people to actually read this sites reviews.
I have absolutely zero interest in Cyberpunk 2077 as a franchise, but I love the cyberpunk genre, so I'm sure I'll get round to this eventually. Seems to be some pretty obvious Akira riffs, which isn't a bad thing.
If only the game was as good as the anime. The world wold have been a happier place.
@BeerIsAwesome it's a complete story so it wouldn't matter if it's one and done.
This anime is the best I've seen so far this year, beating even Spy x Family (though they are not really comparable, different target audience) and Lucy has shot through the ranks to be my most favourite female anime character in maybe the past five years or even more. It's truly fantastic and I can't stop thinking about it.
@ShogunRok great review.
One question, are all the episodes already released or is it an weekly release?
Amazing show. I'm generally not a huge fan of Studio Trigger or the cyberpunk genre but Trigger really did justice to the genre with Edgerunners.
@BeerIsAwesome: Its a limited series of ten episodes, its already done.
I'm not badly into Japanese cartoons but I absolutely loved Cyberpunk 2077, and with all the praise this is getting I'll defo give it a watch.
@whizzkidd All ten episodes are already out, so you can binge it if you want!
A bit remiss to not even mention the fantastic score AND soundtrack, especially when some episodes have their emotional weight and dependancy tied so closely to certain recurring tracks and themes. I'm loving reading the positive reviews all round though!
@ShogunRok great. Thanks a lot. That way I can resubscribe only for a month and watch this weekend.
@BowTiesAreCool Would have liked to go into more detail about a few things but also wanted to keep the review quite snappy, since reviewing shows isn't really our focus. Did squeeze "Outstanding use of music" into the pros, though. Genuinely is outstanding as well!
I have slept on this tbh, little interest in the game, although I will get to it. However it looks like I should give it a watch - everyone loves Sunday morning cartoons so I’ll schedule it in!
Was cool seeing Claire bartending in the background during one of the Afterlife scenes. Fun show.
@BowTiesAreCool Score by Silent Hill's Akira Yamaoka, no less.
@GuyProsciutto that makes a lot of sense!
@ShogunRok yeah of course! As soon as I hit send I thought I hope he doesn't take it as a dig.
Not really my thing, but thanks to torrents I don't have to bother about subs to any of the streaming platforms so I'll grab this later and see what its like.
Awesome show, terrible English emo pop music
Is the game worth playing now? I've stayed away since all the furore surrounding the game and can I watch this without having played the game?
@BeerIsAwesome that's a interesting way to put it 😂
I just finished watching it. Being limited to 10 episodes means it felt rushed in places and prevents you from learning more about some characters or developing any kind of real connection with them. Having said that, I really appreciated their attention to detail and being faithful to the source material. I found myself smiling whenever I recognised a location or song from the game, and was fascinated by the choice of songs from the soundtrack and the scenes they used them in. Overall it exceeded my expectations and would give it a solid 8/10. I highly recommended The Ghost in the Shell series to anyone who enjoyed Edgerunners. Ghost in the Shell and Cowboy Bebop are pretty much the only other anime series I can still watch these days without feeling like I’ve outgrown the medium.
@GorosBat That would make reviews pointless, and remove all integrity. If you try to please everyone, you have no opinion in the first place.
@Humaniac Another negative nancy, you make it so easy for people to block you 😂
I usually cannot abide anime but I gave this a watch and it blew me away! Absolutely loved it.
I mean, it’s Trigger. Why would anyone doubt they could deliver?
Watched the first episode. Was pretty meh.
I liked up to episode 6 then it took a very heavy nose dive to the point where I was least not liking the show.
However the art and style was on point and Rebecca was a fun character so it wasn’t all bad.
@BeerIsAwesome What makes you think this will get sequels?
@BeerIsAwesome What are you talking about? Never happened at all. Why you think that this anime is going to get more seasons?
I've only had the chance to watch Episodes 1 & 2, but so far I've been very impressed with the series.
This show was so awesome I restarted playing cyberpunk as a Corpo net runner as a nod to Lucy!
