I like the notifications inbox and I adjusted to the new design after 2 or 3 months of shaking my fist at the screen when visiting NintendoLife, so it's all good.
One thing I would really love is if you guys could use tags for the articles, so the readers could easily seek all the articles pertaining one game or topic: maybe they are already there and I can't use them because I am a klutz. It's highly probable.
@get2sammyb See my last post :') Other than that it is fine, but then so was the old one. But I agree it needed a refresh. I do like the notification menu.
@get2sammyb The time stamps are still bothering me No, but seriously, they are. Either an option to display it as NLife does it or a 24-hour clock would be appreciated.
Other than that, well, it's alright. Still prefer the old design to be completely honest.
Personally I still don't like the design in general. That's not to say I don't like the new features and the fact it fits better on my screen overall but I do think the Home page is a mess - far too cluttered! I think the Home page should be far more simplified - like a top 5 news stories of the week and/or most read, top 5 reviews and/or highest rated games and top 5 Video's with maybe a main story or 'breaking news' article at the top. This is all that's needed for the home page in my opinion to keep it far cleaner looking and less cluttered. Its much more a 'home page' style. Each top 5 can then have a link to the main sub/headings - like News, reviews, videos - Something like want more news for example at the bottom of each top 5. At most a top 10 anyway - even with 5, that's still a lot of articles on the home page though.
The News page, which used to be my 'home' page still doesn't have all the 'latest' activity (mostly the Forum comments as per the Home page) and as a 'regular' to the site, I don't need to re-read the 'most read' or even care what has been read the most - If it was of interest, I have already seen and read it. The only thing I need is the 'latest' activity across the site. I am sure I am not the only one who would find this useful
I still prefer the old layout - not only was it cleaner looking, it also had a News page that had the 'latest news' in order, the latest reviews and the latest 'Forum' activity - all at the top of the page and therefore had little scrolling to keep updated with ALL the latest activity as it happens. As a regular visitor, it meant that I never missed anything.
I also prefer 24hr time stamps but that's a minor issue.
I know I maybe in the minority and its not like I could see you reverting back anyway - even if the majority prefer the older design. I too am a Graphic Designer and know the benefits of keeping things un-cluttered looking. Too much information being thrown at people comes across as a mess. Its far better to draw the eye to the 'important' bits rather than bombard you with everything. Retail sites know this too, their Home page often has a few big deals from the various categories - not everything. It draws people into their 'site' as a whole. Magazine based sites also do this, they don't try to put a whole week on their home page - just a few top stories from their categories to draw you in.
Anyway that's my opinion...
A pessimist is just an optimist with experience!
Why can't life be like gaming? Why can't I restart from an earlier checkpoint??
Feel free to add me but please send a message so I know where you know me from...
I feel like the home page is a lot more functional for me in terms of order of articles on mobile. It used to be that certain articles were pinned and some weren't - and some seemed to take a higher order for a reason I couldn't figure out. I think it's a lot easier for me to make sure I catch all the articles in this format.
And I just figured out that by selecting "All Topics" it puts them in order of the most recent post. So that solves my forum woes.
I love the new design, it's prettier and more organized. The only thing I didn't like was the size of the ads... Although I enjoyed how you placed them so we don't click on them by mistake when we're trying to read an article.
Also, how do you guys get money out of ads? I mean, do we have to click on them sometimes? And is it possible to limit the ads to gaming stuff only? =)
P.S: I deactivated uBlock after reading this topic. Maybe you should do an article about it, I'm sure that almost everyone would turn their "adblockers" off if you asked, this is a great community after all.
@Tasuki I don't think so... Right now, I've got one about a bank and another about investments, but I definitely didn't look for anything on these topics and only I have access to this computer. Earlier I had an ad about cars even though I don't remember ever reading about cars online. =/
@ztpayne7 I'm glad you said that because this was one of the things we wanted to fix. The "sticky" articles remained at the top because we wanted to promote them, but it wasn't a very elegant solution at all. Now we can actually pimp more articles, without it getting in the way of the day-to-day news cycle.
@RenanKJ We want the ads to be relevant at all times, but we don't always have a "campaign" running. To be honest I'm not entirely sure how it works, but it may be determined by recent browsing habits as @Tasuki mentioned. Not really sure, though.
We may offer a paid tier which would remove the ads for a small fee. Is that something you'd be interested in?
I prefer the old one but this one isn't to bad I spose, it just look's like every other trashy site now the old design was straight to the point and I could see if i'd missed any new's instantly. It take's a little longer now with the clutter but it'll do, maybe I just need to get used to it.
I found a bug in the list of wanted games. I was looking for games I might be interested by release date (great feature btw), and after that I went to my games collection. The total amount in the "Want" list was about 100, but the page doesn't show them all (in my phone I believe it showed about 30 games, in my computer it showed about 80 games). I exported the list and it contained all the games, so it is storing the data correctly. Can you take a look when you have some spare time?
