So I bought motion controllers because I thought they were really immersive but have found them far too awkward to use. I am basically asking for any generic advice on how they can be calibrated better or adjusted in some way because they seem at first like they will MAKE a game but they end up BREAKing the game.
So far I have given up on the following: The Walking Dead - Saints and Sinners (love it but the movement and tracking is awful and I find it too frustrating to get past the first major city area after touching base at the bus - I can't even switch to the controller), Skyrim VR (I would love to swing a sword at stuff but gave up because of the weird way you pick stuff up which takes me TONS of tries before I'm successful so I just use the controller).
I have also given up with Farpoint (with the aim controller) due, perhaps, to how it apparently manages the difficulty level. I did great getting through one of the blue caves but an enclosed Boss area with rockets and combinations of enemies has me beaten in seconds EVERY SINGLE TIME. Is it true that the game becomes harder because I did well early on? The game doesn't seem to allow going back to an earlier point so I can play like a turkey and make this excruciating part easier.
I rarely have a problem with any normal PS4 or PS5 game.
I just bought a used VR for $79.99 at the local Pawn America store in Minnesota, and I’m experiencing VR now for the first time. It’s truly awesome!! Anyway, I’ve had some difficulty with certain games and the motion controls, too. Room brightness didn’t seem to make a difference. As far as I can tell, success will come with getting the height, angle, and distance right between you and the camera. Still having some issues with height on some games, but I think I’ve got the distance down. It’s 5 feet. Grab a tape measure, measure out 5 feet from the camera, and stick a big X of masking tape on the floor. Stand there when you play. That’s what I did, and it’s been working for me, anyway.

From what I can tell, finding that sweet spot with distance from the camera to the headset is paramount for success. I had a heck of a time getting the distance right with Everybody’s Golf VR, but after about 20 minutes of messing around, I found that sweet spot and it’s been pretty good since. I still miss the ball sometimes, and I slice way too often. Still, I slice in real life, so I’m used to that. 😜
I got Farpoint to work well; I sat down and angled the camera down. I only played it for an hour to 1 1/2 hours before getting a headache; I made it through the blue cave just fine, but then let my buddy try out the headset and he got blown away by those damn shooting spider bugs. I’m guessing it’s at the same part you’re stuck on.
For whatever reason, I still can’t seem to get Sniper Elite VR to work super well with the motion controllers. Reloading the bolt action rifle has been annoying as heck.
The best motion controller game I’ve found so far is Creed: Rise to Glory. You’ll know when you’re too close or far from the camera on that game. (5 feet away is perfect; the camera is probably boob height, facing straight.) The Creed game is on sale now; I recommend buying that one and seeing if you can get the motion controllers working with that game. Even if you don’t like boxing, just hitting those punching bags and feeling the motion controller’s vibrations are incredibly satisfying.
Blood and Truth seems to work pretty well with the motion controllers, as does Until Dawn: Rush of Blood. Arizona Sunshine has been hit and miss; it’s the reloading that stinks with that game.
Rez works well with the motion controllers, too, though I use my head to aim most of the time on that game.
Thanks for the feedback. I really appreciate it. I've had VR for quite some time now but it helps to get the reminder about distance since my system is in a pretty small office room that I clearly need to adjust a little to get the most out of (using the 5 feet rule).
I've only really loved Resident Evil 7, Moss (and I never play games like this) and Blood and Truth. The latter was the only one that I felt implemented the controllers effectively enough.
I'm not a big boxing fan but Creed does sound fun.
The camera and tracking can be a pain, I think it is suggested that the camera is placed at a lower level but probably best to try it at various heights. Also try not to have an overbright room as this will affect things.
As for the games you mentioned, I haven't really had too much issues with any of them although sometimes Farpoint does have a bit of drift and I tend to shake the Move controller. I have actually 100% this with the Moves although it is widely acknowledged that the AIM controller is the way to go. Do have another go with this as it is a very good game, that boss (I know the one) is a stumbling block for many, I suggest watching a YouTube video to figure out its attacks, I do think it is a bit difficult and stumped me for a little while. The game in my opinion gets easier after that but tbh the thing about Farpoint is the weapons and levelling them up so you get the variant you want, for example I never used a sniper rifle as aiming down the sights with the Moves was a pain, so I just levelled up on of the guns which become a long range fastish gun.
As for Saints and sinners, again a great game and the tracking I never felt was too bad so yeah it might be your setup.
Skyrim also is fantastic in VR and the Moves are the best way to play. Again I didn't really experience too many problems here, mainly the menus as they haven't been designed with the Moves in mind...so I suggest setting up with HotKeys (google it if you need further info).
Those are three great games so please try different camera positions, light solutions.
