So I’m on my own tonight, as it’s my mother-in-laws funeral tomorrow and the missus, her sister and my step-daughter are staying in the old house together one last time.
I hate being without the missus of an evening. Apart from just plain missing her company and our conversations… I can never find anything to watch, as the missus and I watch everything together. She’d go nuts if we got home after the funeral tomorrow and found out that I’d carried on with House of the Dragon or started season 5 of The Crown… or whatever else we have on the social viewing agenda without her.
So, during what is already a somber time, I’ve not wanted to even start God of War: Ragnarok until Saturday, when we can draw a line under what has been a tough few months… but obviously it’s been at the forefront of my mind since the reviews started dropping last week. So how do I quench my God of War thirst without starting it… and how do I occupy my evening alone without watching shows that my missus wants to watch with me?
Well… I finally watched Raising Kratos. I honestly don’t know how I’ve gone this long and never watched it, what with how much that God of War 2018 effected me. I’ve started it once or twice over the years… and although I was engaged and enjoying it, I’d cut it short around 10 minutes in and do something else. Well, it’s almost as if I was subconsciously keeping it in the bank for tonight, as it was the perfect way to pass 2 hours by this evening. What a great documentary!
@colonelkilgore Condolences, it sounds like it's been a bit of a rocky road lately for all of you. I hope everything goes as well as it can today.
Gaming can at least act as a distraction and allow you a moment of escape from whatever else is going on in your life. It doesn't make things go away but gives you time off from thinking about all that other stuff. You also know that you are in for an absolute treat when you do boot up GoWR so guaranteed you are going to get fully immersed in it.
I remember watching Raising Kratos when it released and enjoying it quite a bit. It gave some real revelations into how the industry works and what's involved. That and the fact that the people behind these games are only human and have the same things going on in their lives as we all do.
Despite getting the game at launch I’ve not played much. So been on a media blackout.
I’m about 7 hours in & been playing on the ‘No Mercy’ difficulty. Got absolutely destroyed at the beginning but once I hit Lvl2 gear I was good.
I like that you have access to both weapons from the first game straight away. I have definitely started using the blades more now- especially for crowd control & evasion... .
I’m playing on PS4 Pro. I started on performance mode, but the game really didn’t look that good. Switched over & it’s stunning. I can’t wait for the photo mode.
Honestly 30fps is fine if it’s done right.

Anyway, seems like this game has a ton of side content compared to the last one and most of it is pretty good
I'm currently at 21 hours but I explore as much as I can and die quite a bit, because I chose the harder difficulty. Needless to say, I'm loving every minute.
So Thrud Thorsdottir is an absolute joy… only just met her but if first impressions are anything to go by, she’ll be up there with Kratos and Mimir by the time I’m done!
I think I've managed to sink just 12 measly hours into this so far so way behind others. I'm absolutely loving it though. The combat is just as good as I remember it being in the first one. I know people complain about enemies having a big pool of health but I think that keeps it interesting as you are constantly finding ways to control the mob all around you. The exploration is what I'm getting sucked into most, and I'm getting that feeling that I'm always missing something.
Oh… my… god! Just beat The Maven, at the end of The Elden Sanctum… I must’ve died around 10 times. Found her extremely tough but oh so satisfying when it started to click.
I'm now 30h in and it doesn't feel like I'm anywhere near the end. I'm doing every side activity so and I die a bunch so I expect it to go for another 20-30 to platinum.
Anyway, my biggest complaint about GoW 2018 was the lack of epic boss fights compared to older games - glad to report Ragnarok fixes all that
@Voltan I'm at 43 hours now and also doing as much side content as possible.
I've found 30 out of 48 Ravens, look for them as soon as I hear that familiar sound and done 3 tombstones. The main story is superb but I won't say anything, so as not to spoil it for anyone.
@colonelkilgore Wow you platted Ragnarok already? Is it easier to acquire than the last game. For example will I have to beat all 12 tombstones for a trophy?
@JudgeDredd I enjoy taking them on. But it will definitely up my playtime. Possibly leave some of them for post game just like I did with the Valkyries!
Off topic but I did the tutorial for Snow Runner and I think I will love it like I loved Death Stranding, it's giving me that kind of vibe minus the Kojima touch!
@colonelkilgore Sounds fantastic 😳 haha , I died many times at the hands of the Valkyries so it doesn't surprise me. I look forward to taking them all down.
