@Kidfried@Beyonslay I would agree that the graphics and art direction look beautiful. Some of the NPCs can look a little rough at times. Whether the game is the best looking on the platform is debatable. Having just finished Detroit, I think it trumps everything so far, but it’s hard to compare because the art styles are just so different. And personal taste would certainly factor in.
But I will say Red Dead 2 runs amazingly smoothly for as large a game as it is. There are very few graphical glitches that I’ve experienced. Sometimes Arthur or the horse get kinda stuck in an environment or in an unnatural position, but considering the breadth of what this game does, it is impressive how seldom these things occur. To be able to ride across such a huge map which has constant random events and people along the way, and with no loading screens, it’s simply amazing. So I think as a technical feat, RDR2 is most definitely the most impressive game on this console generation.

Does anyone remember how we had loading times when entering houses in open world games a few years back? Compare that to what we get now to get that sense of accomplishment. As others have mentioned, I'm impressed with graphics and details each and every time I boot up the game.
I think some of the character models in cutscenes are amazing, especially Arthur. The detail in face close-ups like pockmarks, scars and individual bristles of stubble look so good it's like watching a movie sometimes.
Also, the animal behaviour is quite impressive. I love the way that hawks swoop and that you can actually see them carrying off their prey. I was once sat for about 10 minutes just watching vultures pick apart a deer corpse through Arthur's binoculars. It just needed a bit of Sir David Attenborough.
Haha so there I was trying to escape from one area unseen by swimming across the lake and Arthur actually drowned because he got se exhausted I couldn't make it to the shore! I assumed you can swim infinitely like in other games but how wrong I was! So pay attention folks
@andreoni79 Make sure that they are 3 star grade rabbits. There's a lot that have only filthy 1 or 2 grade pelts to begin with. I had trouble with this for ages but for some reason I was using a bow with small arrows.
@Kidfried I get fed up with the game when I have to make along trek to get to camp or quest giver. That's usually when I pause and go on with life duties so in a way it's useful for me but definitely not fun. It's like fast travel is nonexistent even though there are many fast travel options, but they are either far away or I have to pay huge amounts of money to get rid of bounties. I'm a guy who just doesn't like this in any openworld game and it's a game breaker for me usually. Wish it was different. If I were playing it on PC I'd probably download a mod to simplify fast traveling.
@kyleforrester87 Can I use any weapon to get a perfect pelt? I thought that was tied to the weapon the game suggests as the best one to get a clean kill.
@andreoni79 I dunno to be honest best listen to what apostatemage said on that front, I just assumed it was down to the weapon. Obviously a shotgun isn't going to leave much left of a rabbit lol
As best I can tell, if you die in the middle of a walk-about and are out exploring, hunting, etc, then you lose all the items you picked up since the end of the last actual mission you completed but you wake up in pretty much the same location that you died in, more or less.
Case in point: I had been lolly-gagging around collecting pelts and hunting meat and maybe a few other knickknacks across a huge chunk of the map, gradually making my way to camp to turn in some meat and hides, then I was sidetracked (minor spoiler follows for a random stranger event that I will tag just in case you don’t want to read about some of these little minor run-ins that you may not have seen yet)— when I saw a white “stranger” marker off in the woods. It was nighttime and I was close to camp, but I could hear talking and saw a fire so I decided to check it out and lo and behold — it was the KKK ordaining a new member. So I watched for a while waiting to see if they would attack, and they didn’t, but I just couldn’t resist so I just opened fire and slaughtered the lot of them but as I was walking around looting bodies afterward, I got too close to the burning cross and Arthur erupted in flames and died within seconds. It was very disheartening. Anyway, so I respawned in the same spot later in the day, but there was no sign of any scuffle and all my pelts and stuff I’d been hauling from the mountains for the last 2 hours was lost. The auto-save triggered upon death to there was no save to reload back before the conflict unless I went back to way before the last mission where I had a manual save.
So I guess let this be a precautionary tale to you all to manual save often if you are collecting things and on your way back to camp or town to exchange the stuff, lest you have an unfortunate death before you can cash in.
@andreoni79 To get perfect pelts, you need to find a 3* animal and use the appropriate weapon. If you hit R1 when in range, the game tells you what to use. Rabbits are taken out with the varmint rifle or small game arrows. The latter you need to craft yourself but the rifle is great and can easily be used whilst on your horse.
Snakes are the only thing I'm struggling to get clean kills on as arrows seem to not kill them in one hit and if it takes two arrows, the level of the pelt drops.
And @Th3solution I can at least reassure you that you don't lose legendary pelts if you die while carrying one. The game isn't that mean at least.
@andreoni79 Also, larger animals need clean kills with a rifle I think so it's worth picking up a decent rifle with a scope. The legendary animals normally need a few hits but I don't think you need to worry about perfectly clean kills as their pelts are only every legendary.
For bigger animals, you can also lasso them and then trigger a knife kill when you get up to them.
@Kidfried Haha! I can attest to the danger of that!
On a separate note, it sure is hard to keep from gaining a wanted level / bounty. I’ve been trying to play the game as law-abiding as can be, and trying to be a virtuous criminal, but I’ll hear someone shouting for help and then run to provide aid and then it turns into a firefight to free the person from the bandits and so I kill them and suddenly the lawmen are after me. It’s a no win situation. I’m just gonna ignore all those cries for help I think.
