I played solo and quite enjoyed it. I think the wandering around scavaging and saving victims in a desolate New York actually suits a lone agent.
I tried the Dark Zone and kept getting blasted by rogues which is pretty much what I expected from that side of the game.
Played the beta for a few hours, thought it was quite fun, but limited. I was hoping to mix it up a bit more but everyone seems to look and play the same way. Lack of close combat or stealth attacks is a shame. Could be fun until something like Mass Effect 4 multiplayer arrives I guess. Will wait on the reviews.
Saw the first review had popped up this evening from Cheat code central, a few hours later the score jumped from a 7.5 to a 9.2, 4.6/5 on their website, of course Metacritic could have been incorrect but to me, something stinks.
Just played 5hours of this game and I'm loving it. The game works, it looks lovely, it matchmakes when you want to join others without any issues. It does what it said it would. I'm more than happy. It's exactly what I expected the game to be.
As for the other players standing in your way at the door of the safe houses I didn't experience it and I went in and out of multiple safe areas/houses trying to get it to happen. I even tried to do it to others and not only did no one try to join me but I didnt even fizz any of the other players. Their characters justs moves round/thru me. Fixed?
I'm still gonna wait a few weeks more before deciding but base on first impressions already released I think this game might get a between 7 to 8 score.
The positive reviews I've seen from the public appear to be, 'wow it works' and 'i'm getting my money's worth for sure' it works is a major bonus of course and the million collectibles are probably the greatest ever, as if Ubisoft wouldn't give you exactly that. I'll wait for the push review before considering a future playthrough.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi: From reading the review, the score certainly doesn't match up to what the reviewer is saying. Basically, combat poor, loot good. Not sure how that acquaints to a 9.2. Anyway, reviewer obviously didn't spend enough time with the game. Will also wait to see what other outlets say about it. I want to like this game, but the time/money investment crossed with lack of reviews has forced me to keep my wallet closed for now.
Quite a few reviews are already saying that its quite repetitive and beginning to wonder whether it will have the staying power to get to the end game and what that entails. They are also saying that the DZ at the moment is OK but raising concerns about high level players dominating and spoiling the experience for new comers/low level/solo players.
To quote one review in progress...
"My only concern at this stage is whether there's enough variety in the setting to keep players hooked for hundreds of hours. Apologies for pulling out an obvious comparison, but The Division's New York lacks the other-worldly pizazz of Destiny's (admittedly limited) planets. It’s the same with the enemies, who are just generic bad folk with varying shapes of gun. The Division is clearly designed to be played for months, but it's unclear at this stage whether the world will be interesting enough to retain players' attentions. So too the gun-play, which is very solid but currently lacking in variety. I'll massively caveat this by saying I've only played 5-6 hours so far, and the shooting could well evolve the deeper I dig into The Division, but right now it feels 'good enough'"
Another quote from another review in progress...
"It’s hard to say whether the game can maintain the pace and variety long-term. Some of the encounters are already showing signs of wearing thin, while the endless repetition of a few lines of dialogue brings back worrying memories of Assassin’s Creed’s notorious ‘Dirty thief, I’ll have your hand for that.’ This is also a starkly beautiful game, creating a snow-covered post-apocalyptic landscape from familiar New York streets and landmarks, and making it both scenic and eerily convincing. The convincing bit falters slightly when you can offload a mass of SMG rounds into the body and head of a baseball-bat wielding bezerker and barely make them stagger. I’m still concerned about some slightly generic characters, scenarios and dialogue, not to mention the long-term appeal of fighting a handful of enemy types on the snowbound streets of just one city."
These are after 5-6 hours so I am still holding off as these are 'issues' I have - along with a few others and IF these continue to be an issue throughout, I certainly won't be buying - even after the inevitable price drop.
A pessimist is just an optimist with experience!
Why can't life be like gaming? Why can't I restart from an earlier checkpoint??
Feel free to add me but please send a message so I know where you know me from...
The Dark Zone is fun of course you are going to get groups of players killing others for loot and also to get the bounty levels up and get a manhunt. There is a learning curve for the Dark Zone sometimes you will get burnt other times you can have a great experience. It all evens out. The gameplay is fun and the environment is well thought out. I enjoy the combat mechanics within the game and the loot system.
If you do compare the division and Destiny then it's like comparing pancakes and coffee to a small buffet breakfast bar. Destiny might be repetitive to a point but it does at least have a decent amount of variety in pvp and pve Co op or otherwise. This doesn't seem to have any legs.
I was pretty apprehensive about this game considering the long development time and numerous delays, but me and my friend decided to split it as an impulse buy considering not too many games I'm excited for (except for Hitman) are releasing right now. I haven't played too much, but so far I'm liking it. The dark zone is a lot better than I predicted it would be, but then again I've only played in the beginner's bracket, so the jury's out as to whether it's good enough as an end-game. I'm not feeling that I've wasted my money, though!
Just bought today with the Smyths trade in deal (£9.99 plus Fallout 4), not much of an online gamer so don't know anyone with this, anyone who is up for going into the Dark Zone with someone who won't double cross please add me (BrizzoUK)! Would be up for a Push Square Squad!
