@Th3solution@Foxy-Goddess-Scotchy Just picked up 13 Sentinels and Odinsphere in the Big in Japan sale... appreciate the heads up from the both of yous... I had looked through the BiJ selection earlier in the week and completely missed the fact that 13 Sentinels was there.
Know absolutely nothing about Odinsphere but it was £16 and Foxy had just gushed so I thought what the hell... you have to love that ‘savings’ screen just before you confirm the purchase. £99.98 worth of gaming for £40 and some change... you love to see it!
I just got Final Fantasy 7 remake and will make it my main game once I've finished Valhalla. Never played the original and only played some of XV before dropping it but I liked the demo so thought I'd get it when it got to around £20. I actually purchased it from Amazon weeks ago when it got close to that but it ended up being the only time I've had a parcel from them just never turn up. Strangely they wouldn't do a replacement so I got a refund, however the price had already gone back up. It finally went cheap enough again so now I've got it.
Anyway, long tangent aside, I look forward to giving it a go.
@colonelkilgore Sweet. I’ve been interested in both titles. A 9/10 and 8/10 respectively if you take the Push Square reviews. Pretty sure I’ll at least pick up 13 Sentinels too before the end of the sale. I have store credit available so it’s like playing with fake money! No consequences! 😜
The only other game I’m interested in buying right now is The Last of Us 2, and I’m determined to wait on the announcement about the inevitable PS5 version first.
“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”
@Th3solution yeah I’m waiting on potential PS5 versions of Last of Us 2 and Ghost of Tsushima too. There are a couple of other games I wanna add to the backlog too... Chronos before the Ashes, Kingdoms of Amalur: Rereckoning, Yakuza: Like a Dragon, Judgement and the two Evil Within Games. I’m also really looking forward to Returnal.
Oh... I was just going to start replying to you in the recommendation thread @colonelkilgore and here you are having already bought it only 30 minutes after asking me in the reccomendations thread. Guess I might as well post my reply anyway so you have an idea of what to expect and tag @Th3solution too seeing as he seems to be interested in it 😅
Without going too in depth Odin Sphere is like the other Vanillaware titles with 2D anime artwork and sprites as you're probably already well aware of no doubt.
It's essentially a 2D action rpg that revolves around 5 different protagonists set in the world of Erion.
War has broken out between the Fairies of Ringford and The Warrior Kingdom of Ragnanival over the Crystallization Cauldron, a mystical artifact from the ruined kingdom of Valentine, that can create crystals from phozons (The essence of life) that can then be made into jeweled weapons called Psyphers that can directly absorb the phozons/life from slain enemies.
And well... The cauldron may be part of an ancient prophecy that fortells the world's demise.
The set up of the game being you're a young girl reading a set of books in the attic with each book covering a different protagonist.
There's Gwendolyn, the daughter of Demon lord Odin and one of the Valkyrie, Cornelius, the crown prince of Titania, Mercedes, the Fairy Princess of Ringford, Oswald, The Shadow Knight & Velvet, The Forest Witch.
The characters cross paths at various points and you gradually learn the overarching plot as you progress throughout it. There's a handy timeline and scene viewer in the attic so you can see when the various events take place between the perspectives of the five protagonists.
The dialogue is very Shakesperean and it blends that with a lot of norse mythology and it's own story ideas and beats for the main plot.
The combat's really quite quick (I guess you could sort've like a beat 'em up? It's similar to Muramasa's combat from my understanding?) with each character having different movesets and mechanics with Leifthrasir adding a lot of new abilities and spells for all the characters that you can upgrade and find throughout the levels. There's also an alchemy system to make various potions from healing tonics and antidotes to firebombs and the like.
The only major downside I'd say is that it only has 8 main areas in the game with each character having 6/7 main chapters so you'll be going to the same places throughout the game frequently so it might look/feel a bit samey at times though the interweaving story means you'll be visiting them for very different reasons at different points in time.
... That's all I can think of at the moment. Very easy plat too (I think you just have to collect everything and beat the game) as I've got it and I don't really bother with those.
@Foxy-Goddess-Scotchy thanks for the very indepth reply, very informative as ever. So i have no idea when I'm gonna squeeze Odin Sphere in but I've just moved my calendar around and I'll be playing 13 Sentinels in October 2022 (I'm not even joking 🤣).
I bought the witcher 3 game of the year addition because I have never played any of the dlcs, and for £7.99 you cant go wrong at getting 200hrs of game, I had the disc of the original for along time before trading it in about a year and a half ago and the cheapest I could find the game of the year disc version was £15 at Cex, people where selling it cheaper on ebay £10 but with p&p not included takes it to about the same. I don't actually know when I'll get around to playing it again because I have so much to already get through but I felt for that price I'd be getting robbed not having it 🤣
@Thrillho I will definitely squeeze it in, I don't where or when though, Once I'm finished with days gone I will probably have time to fit one big game in before mass effect comes out, I don't know whether that will be a re-run of GOW on ps5 and aim for the plat, final fantasy 7 remake, death stranding or Resident Evil 2 Remake.
@MaulTsir That’s an awesome list and sounds like you can’t go wrong. I’m in a similar boat as far as when to try to squeeze in FF7R. And I loved RE2 Remake so much that I have RE3 Remake and RE4 in my backlog. Both RE2 and Death Stranding are top 10 material in the last generation in my book.
And when Mass Effect Remake (Legendary Edition I think it’s called) comes out then it’ll only make more for me to play 😄. So I haven’t decided when to play it; I might put it off until I have a PS5, depending on how the remake looks and runs on each system.
I just got Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, looking forward to picking up where I left off. I didn't find it too difficult I just got bored with the game, looking forward to making a more sincere commitment this time around.
"(Music is) a purposeless play. This play, however, is an affirmation of life" (paraphrased) - John Cage
@MaulTsir in regards to the God of War update on PS5, is that something that you can plat again then, or would you just be carrying over your trophy progress from the PS4 version?
@Th3solution thanks that just my need to play ASAP list 🤣 I still has GoT, Jedi Fallen Order, The Tomb Raiders, Outer Worlds, Resident Evil 3 remake and 7 with possibly a go of Persona 5 before even thinking about ps5 games.
Mass effect Trilogy was just one of the games I remember really enjoying the experience of it. I rank 1 & 2 as probably in my top 5 games ever so I will jump at the chance to replay them again with all the fancy bells and whistles.
@colonelkilgore I'm not to sure to be honest, I did assume it would just carry over, I never got the plat because of the backlog I have I just didn't feel like putting time in to it but it is my favourite game of this generation so it does bug me that I didn't do it the justification it deserved by getting the plat.
@MaulTsir yeah I kinda assumed there wasn't a separate Trophy list but your comment piqued my interest. Let me know once/if you do start it though, as if there was a separate PS5 trophy list... it would be a real red-alert backlog-buster kinda situation and I'd wanna plat it all over again just prior to Ragnarok.
@MaulTsir Ah, more gems in there! Assuming you mean Ghost of Tsushima (and not Game of Thrones 😉) that’s a fantastic one, as as the TR games and J:FO. Those three are also top stuff. And we’re on the same wavelength with Persona 5 (slowly making my way through it — at the 75 hr mark, but it’s quite good too) and The Outer Worlds, which is also on my short list, backlog-wise. In fact, you’ve touched on a lot of my short list. My complete backlog is dozens and dozens, but my short one includes those, as well as a few others like Life is Strange 2, AC Odyssey, 13 Sentinels, A Plague Tale, Nathan Drake Collection, Hitman... that’s all assuming I don’t get a PS5 anytime soon. Then you have to add Astrobot, Control, and Bugsnax. An embarrassment of riches for sure.
@colonelkilgore Since it’s just a free upgrade, I assume it won’t have a new trophy list. I could be wrong. If it were an official PS5 build then that might be different. I haven’t really looked into it, but do any of the PS5 versions of cross-gen games have new trophy lists? (Like Spiderman or Control for example)
@Th3solution it's a 'some do/some don't' situation as far as I can tell... probably with more that don't. Spiderman Remastered and Control do as far as I know.
Also, have you seen the trailer on YouTube for God of War: Definitive Edition released in May 2021 on PS5? I can't find any actual info about it but I get the impression that it might be a upscale collection of God of War 1, 2 & 3... (maybe even Ghost of Sparta and Chains of Olympus too).
