TLDR: The beginning half of the game's narrative was bafflingly put out as a series of "lore" videos on youtube (rather than being part of the game itself).
I picked up the game at launch and am thoroughly enjoying it. However, I can see why people think that the story is lacking. The story based trailer they put out a couple weeks ago is the only background you get. It is unfortunate that this is the case because you are pretty much plopped into the middle of the story. I highly recommend checking out the lore videos that counterplay games put out. In this case, the lore is actually just the beginning of the story. Honestly, I think this is super lame. People shouldn't have to go to youtube to understand how the story begins. Just wanted to give everyone a heads up. While those of us who were excited for the game knew about the lore videos and their significance, most people will not.
@nessisonett Well Souls works because it's more about visual storytelling if anything. Its worldbuilding and ability to flesh out the scope of where you're going without much in the way of an actual narrative works for the atmosphere those games provoke a lot of the time. It's kind of reminiscent of shows like Samurai Jack in that sense where it's more about "show don't tell"
Considering this is a completely new IP from a developer that's actually done solidly written looter RPGs before, and it's very much trying to have a bite out of that Destiny pie more than Souls, a game that was actually expected to have a sizable narrative given the talent working on it, I can see where the complaints come from
