So Fextralife has just posted a video about his recent experience when playing Black Myth Wukong… and I’m left a little deflated I’m not gonna lie.
Even though the game is by a first time dev team out of China, the gameplay footage shown over the last few years just appealed to me so much, that it has probably been my most anticipated game since God of War: Ragnarok released last year. Partly because of its souls-like gameplay, partly because of its dark reinterpretation of the Into the West mythos and just how great the combat encounters looked with some epic looking boss fights… but my normal trepidation towards games from unproven origins was superseded, probably in error tbh… for me at least.
Reason being, Fextralife’s experience with the game seems to indicate it is basically a boss-rush… with very little mobs or world exploration. Now I love a good boss fight don’t get me wrong… but I honestly think it’s the exploration around labyrinthine level-design that keeps me coming back to the genre.
Oh well, maybe (unlikely as it is) the devs are keeping stuff back from the demo.
Oh no, I thought this game looked too good to be true and something would lessen its appeal and boss rush is it. Boss rush games don't appeal to me in the slightest but there are those that enjoy them.
Still the whole Souls like genre is going stronger than ever so I'm sure there will be plenty else to play, not least the Elden ring dlc which seems (to me) that it's scope has probably been increased since the success of the main game. In From we trust.
@colonelkilgore I saw the reveal trailer for this, which perked my interest. Beyond that, I haven’t followed this one too closely. I agree, a huge part of what makes this type of game resonate so deeply is the journey. Being dropped into an unfamiliar, alien world and slowly uncovering its context, its secrets, its lessons as you explore on your own terms, forging your own story, is a brand of special sauce that few studios outside of From Software grasp. That said, I wouldn’t count this out yet. It’s hard to watch that video and not be blown away by the potential on display. It does make wonder if they’re holding something back, as there seems to be very little point in mechanics such as turning into a cicada if you can’t do anything interesting with it beyond bypassing a couple enemies to reach a boss. I guess time will tell.
@Jimmer-jammer cheers bud… yeah fingers crossed that there’s more to it than what Fextra got to experience. As you said, it looks incredible and would be a real waste without one of the foundational aspects of the genre.
So I’m incredibly excited about this game once again… not only have the previews pooh-pooh’d the glorified boss-rush reports from a few months back but… it’s all dodge-based defence! Blocking and parrying isn’t a thing apparently (or takes a back seat at least) 😁
@colonelkilgore my expectations have been all over the place for this one. At least it is looking less likely to be only part of a game (I.e just some boss fights knitted together with some loose threads)
But I'm also still super skeptical that it will either run or look like garbage on PS5. In one of those "games that was clearly built for PC" type deals.
But not having to parry a 40 foot monster is also good news, as that is one of the things that bugs me immersion wise. I don't mind parry mechanics in genuine duel based combat, as long as there is also some sidesteps, faints or manoeuvres to link it all together. But when it is the be-all end-all of games it is a bit draining.
I always take TW3 as an example. I want to block, parry and duel with humans, but avoid monster's maws by moving out of the way as best I can. It just feels more natural to react that way and suits gameplay better.
@Ravix in fairness I don’t really mind parrying that much… i mean Sekiro is probably in my top 5 games of all time. It’s just that my minds go-to defends style when playing souls-likes is to dodge, it always has been. So when the general souls-like tide has been flowing towards the more block and parry defence styles, I’ve just hoped that someone would turn the tide back towards my modus-operandi. So excuse me if I seem overly enthused but I just didn’t see it coming with Black Myth Wukong… and I’m pretty frikkin hyped about it tbh 😅
@colonelkilgore yeah, I get it. Especially when it comes down to a certain genre that has obviously been quite saturated lately.
I'm more of "if it suits the game then it works, and ill learn it" and being able to dodge something that has a clear advantage over me is a good thing. Sometimes I think devs get hooked on ideas, parry mechanics, for example, and don't really do any deep thought about how they can tweak gameplay to be fun, challenging and grounded in some kind of logic too. Elden Ring you could pretty much choose based on build whether you wanted a dodge or parry, and even then I think there should have been more done. Dodge rolling into an attack that would definitely still hit you still doesn't work in my brain, even though it is accepted as the right thing to do because of iframes 😅
I'm still waiting on the perfect game combat, but this one could be very interesting

It does look very good and I'm very much into the whole monkey magic vibe, hopefully we will get a cloud at some point (I can't decide if I'm joking or not).
But the whole boss rush talk does concern me.
Anyhoo just watched this gameplay of Phantom Blade Zero on PS Access, looks pretty good....so many great games at the moment.
@Th3solution I knew I’d have you on team-dodge sol… good to know it’s not just me 🤣.
And I’m also really feeling Star Wars: Outlaws! I always liked the look of it but that gameplay from Ubisoft Forward has placed it right up there in terms of excitement. I’m less enthused about Astrobot if I’m honest… I’m just not a mascot-platformer kinda guy really. Thrilled for everyone else though, think it’s gonna be a juggernaut.
I wonder how well Astro is going to sell, tbh. Mascot platformers don’t necessarily do well on the PlayStation platform. The last Sackboy game was supposed quite good but I think it sold poorly. It was early in the generation so it’s hard to draw conclusions with such low PS5 numbers at the time, but it hasn’t done well on PC either. Everyone loved Astro’s Playroom because it was a short, free pack-in. Will it translate to large sales? I think the positive vibes on Push Sqaure are overselling it. I suspect it will do modest numbers, like maybe 2-3 million copies…? On par with Rift Apart probably. Which should be enough to turn a profit, but will get blown away by Ghost of Okinawa, or Uncharted 5: Spelunking with Cassie, or Wolverine, or Bloodborne 2 (we can hope right?). But it’s important to have those smaller E-rated games and a platformer to keep the “Sony only makes third person narrative action games” people in check.

@Th3solution yeah you might be right actually… I was probably going off anecdotal PushSquare reactions and attributing them to the whole PlayStation nation 🤣. I hope it does sell well though as, although them kinda games ain’t my thing, they’re undoubtedly well-made products and deserve supporting.
@JohnnyShoulder
Thanks, you would have thought that I would have learnt by now to not believe anything on this ear internet thingy.
@Th3solution@colonelkilgore
I wonder if the price of £70 is going to seriously limit the sales of Astro.I think there will be quite a few people selling it when they are done which will drive the prices down quickly and perhaps that is why Sony seems to have a dlc roadmap planned to help stem that.
Plus Some of the content (mainly bosses) looked like they were lifted from Astro rescue mission.
Just my two cents and I won't be buying because of VR, I will die on that there hill.
@colonelkilgore That is interesting, and probably a good sign of future success. I wonder what the usual conversion rate is of wishlisting into purchasing. I can only speak of myself and I have a really long wishlist, most of which I’ll probably never buy. I mostly utilize the wishlist so that I’ll get notified if the game goes on sale.
