@JohnnyShoulder I saw one of those lizards tonight but was wasn’t fast enough to catch it. I have made some good progress through 2-1 though and found the second blacksmith. It was getting late though and I’d forgotten that you can actually save progress mid level. Definitely got too use to Returnal 😆

I do really like the way you unlock shortcuts in this game. They aren’t always obvious but when you find one they are definitely welcome.

@render Yeah it can be such a relief to find a short cut sometimes. Dark Souls has the absolute best world design imo as it is all one connected world.

I'm pretty sure the crystal lizards respawn, but forget what the requirements are. They are not like normal enemies that respawn when you die or use a archstrone. It could be down to world tendency, but am not totally sure.

You can pause the game too! By entering photo mode. This has not been possible in a Souls game before.

@JohnnyShoulder @JechtUltima I saw the lizard in 2-1 again yesterday and tried to kill it. Got it once and then it fell off the cliff and all I got was 10 souls!

On a general note I'm having trouble with the armor spider. Anyone got any tips for that one? I've tried it 3 times now and have managed to take it down about 1/4 but I'm just getting hammered before I even get near it.

@JohnnyShoulder Cheers, that's a great video. Will check that site and their other videos out as I get stuck. I'm definitely lacking on the gear front by the looks of it. I was trying to use the heater shield and I think that's why I'm not being successfully at blocking as I guess that's not got fire resistance. That shield he has in that video, I think it's the steel shield, I have got that but when I try and use it it says that I'm not strong enough to use it one handed so guess I need to level up a bit in order to make that work.

I also tried dodge-rolling as a way of avoiding the attacks but just couldn't get the timing right for that and getting stuck in the webs just finishes me off usually.

@render No worries, they are my go to site for any Souls games.

When it does the oil spill attack, I found it better to unlock the camera and run back to avoid it, then lock back on afterwards.

@JechtUltima I'm definitely an average / below average gamer but I like a challenge so try and play most games on the hardest level and then notch it down from there if I'm really struggling. I'm enjoying the difficulty on this though and I probably need to just panic less and get my timing on point to be successful. I will see what works best as I might need to rely on my shield more than my reactions 😀

@JohnnyShoulder Good tip on the locking / unlocking 👍

I finished Demon's Souls. I never played it on PS3 so this was my first time. Overall, I thought it was pretty good but it's definitely my least favourite Souls game.

The difficulty was weird. Like, I one-shotted half of the bosses. But then I found the runs to the bosses to be really, REALLY annoying. I had to put the game down for weeks at a time which was part of the reason it took so long, purely because I was getting so irritated at having to repeat the same run to a boss. It wasn't that they were that difficult because the amount of time it took was totally silly. The run to the Old Hero in particular made me put the game down for like three weeks.

Anyway, I liked some of the stuff towards the end. I liked the ending - it didn't feel anticlimactic like most of the Souls games. But for me I love the bosses in these games and this was not a vintage crop so that's the main reason this was my least favourite Souls game. I didn't need twelve different variations of knight.

Solid 8 for me.

@johncalmc @JechtUltima I quite liked some the bosses in this, as they weren't all just a case of over levelling your character and thownking the boss.

The run to Old Hero was a pain, but you can equip the Thief Ring and those peksy flying mantra ray things won't try an hit you as much. Makes it a bit more bearable.

I rate it above Darks Souls 2 but below the rest. I've enjoyed them all though.

@velio84 Nice, I remember seeing the trailer for this. Will try and watch it one day this week.

@JohnnyShoulder @JechtUltima Cheers for the tips. Cleared the spider using a combination of rolling and shielding. As per my usual style it wasn’t pretty but it worked 😀.

I’ve also managed to pickup a mace which was pretty great at bludgeoning those skeletons so did some farming to level up some stats and buy some magic.

@velio84 I watched 10 minutes of it earlier and it seems really interesting. I haven’t seen much of the original game so it’s really amazing to see how different it is and the process behind remastering it.

@render Well done! Yeah this a good early area to farm some Souls.

Bluepoint did a phenomenal job. It annoys me when people wave it off as 'just a remake', when there was clearly a lot of effort put into it.

@JohnnyShoulder It's an amazing job. I can recognise the areas, enemies and even their behaviour but when you put the two side by side it's like night and day. It truly is exceptional work, and what's more is it sounds like a lot of the developers have really loved the games that they remake so they have a vested interest to do a good job.

render

JohnnyShoulder

@JechtUltima Oh yeah, that is where I first saw it. I didn't know that about Phalanx. I didn't play the original though, so don't have anything to compare it to. Should be an interesting watch.

@velio84 @JechtUltima @JohnnyShoulder I beat him the hard way as well, not realising that it was susceptible to fire. It was definitely a war of attrition. It's definitely an unusual boss to start with as it doesn't really feel like most boss fights. There's no frantic pace to it, and not really any levels to the attacks, it's more that you are stuck in a room with a slug infestation and some salt would be handy!

I managed to beat the Tower Knight last night. I know there was some discussion about bosses in DeS compared to other souls games and I've not played those so can't make a comparison like you guys can, however I did enjoy the battle and thought generally it made quite a good boss. It certainly felt more rewarding than beating Phalanx, and the Armor Spider which was just frustrating due to the closed in space and the webs.

render

JohnnyShoulder

@render Well done! Did you take out the archers before beating him? You can't explore the area beyond yet but it is quite a toughie, so you maybe better off doing some of the areas before coming back to it, if you manage to do what is required before you have done that.

With Phalanx there were a load of messages saying it was weak to fire, so I just chucked a load of fire bombs at it once I bashed a few sheilds away.

@JohnnyShoulder I beat him without taking out the archers as per @Snottie_Drippen advice. I had a few unsuccessful attempts first as I was struggling to get behind him consistently due to how fast that guy can turn when he wants to. Once I'd sussed it though I was able to keep away from him jumping back and I also made use of the pine resin that I'd built up to do extra damage on each hit.

I'll definitely go and investigate some other areas now. I think I'll probably go back to world 2 and carry on into The Tunnel City as I did a bit of that before but ended up at a dead end one way and then the other way I died to a couple of those sand worm like things.

Can't believe I missed all those messages about Phalanx and fire!!

render

Snottie_Drippen

@render nice job! You're going to make me create a new build and jump back in. I love this game!

Snottie_Drippen

JohnnyShoulder

@render Yeah the next directions you can go are quite maze like in The Tunnel City. You will probably be ok up to a certain point the level your character should be, but there will be some harder enemies, some of which you have already come across by the sounds of it!

Tower of Latria or Shrine of Storms would be good to do the first parts, both have their own set of challenges. I would probably leave the Valley of Defilement for now, but you might find it OK.
