@Snottie_Drippen It's a great game so I can see why. I have a few frustrations with it, mainly because of my own skill level really, but I'm looking forward to getting back in again.
@JohnnyShoulder Thanks for the advice, I'll check those out and see how I get on. I did have a quick go at the Valley of Defilement but found that one wrong move in there and I would usually either plummet to my death or get one shotted by those crazy knife wielding dudes. I'll definitely leave that alone for now and see about levelling up first.
I've avoided asking any questions about character builds until now as I wanted to try and suss some of it out myself but generally what is everyones strategy regarding skills and which ones to level up? I've been spending my souls upgrading across the board up until this point, rather than focussing on one or two particular stats but I wonder if I should start doing that and which ones actually work out to be the best?
@render Yeah you probably want to concentrate on two or three. It all depends on what armour you use and what weapons you think you will be using in the main.
My builds have always geared to using a bow and arrow, and some of the mid to heavy weapons/armour.
The below guide is useful from the awesome Fextra, even if you don't go for the exact build they are on about, they do make suggestions for other equipment to use and what stats to level up. https://demonssouls.wiki.fextralife.com/Builds

@JohnnyShoulder I’ve had a read and it’s a really tough choice. It wouldn’t be so bad if you could redistribute the points if you went the wrong way. Also though it’s good as it really gets you to think about how you play. I’m tempted by a strength build but do quite like the idea of magic. Guess a strength build doesn’t rule that out, it just means it not being such a powerful tool.
I went back to the tunnel city and met the flamelurker. Unfortunately he decided not to be my friend and it all got a bit nasty. Stupidity got the better of me though and I got trigger happy and that was that. I didn’t find a short cut this time so it’s going to be a bit of a trek back there 🤦♂️.
@render I've never done a strength build as I prefer the mobility and could never get on with fat rolling (surpassing 50% of your total Equip Burden stat), and preferred the benefit from the invincibility frames faster rolling provides. I've hardly used magic either, apart from briefly in Dark Souls when I was experimenting with builds.
Flamelurker is a tough fight, one I struggled with the most and was the only boss I summoned for. It is a more traditional Souls boss fight than most of the other 'puzzle' type boss encounters in this game. Manage your stamina and only get two or three hits in at a time before concentrating on defence. With these bosses I would sometimes not attack and just block or dodge their attacks so it almost becomes second nature. I believe he is weak to magic, if you don't have any spells to cast you can temporarily imbue your weapon with... sticky white stuff. 😂 Yes really. That is pretty hard to come by iirc. There us also a weapon which deals magic damage, I think it can be found at the Shrine of Storms, but am not certain.

@JohnnyShoulder It's a good point about the fat rolling, hmmm I wonder if I could actually deal with that. For the moment my build means that I can fast roll as I chucked some of the armour off so that I was more agile for the fight with the Armor Spider and I didn't put it back on again. It sounds like there's a definite benefit from staying with that sort of setup.
I got a few good hits in with the flamelurker but that was indeed my problem. I thought I'd got a good chance to get a few extra hits in and he just hammered me. Annoying thing is that I had a load of half moon grass that I'd farmed from the blue eyed chaps right next to where the Tower Knight battle was so I would have been good health wise, well that's if there was going to be time to use it.
And oh yeah the sticky white stuff... I did wonder if that was an intentional joke by From 😂. I've actually got a few of those. I haven't seen it for sale from any of the vendors so I guess that's something once I've used that's that? I've got some spells, I think soul arrow and fire arrow so I might give those a go next time.
@render I wouldn't worry too much about health items, you get to a certain stage when you will have loads of the stuff. Most of the items as well as finding it as loot, merchants will sell them as well. Some merchants you won't have access to later in the game, which I believe is true for Sticky White Stuff. It will be quite expensive though. I think the name was changed slightly in the remake. Dunno why though. Some merchants have new stock in after certain events in the game, so it is worth checking back with them.
Fire arrow I don't think will have any effect on him, soul arrow will but might be a bit weak.

@render Oh and although I have seen people do it, I personally never take any armour off as l like the extra protection. I would mix and match different pieces of armour until I had enough points in Endurance to wear the full set so that I wasn't fat rolling. It is what you prefer really.

@JohnnyShoulder I kept the chest piece but ditched the other bits so that's probably a bit careless, but then I did get past both the Armor Spider and the Tower Knight that way. I actually picked up a new armour set yesterday but couldn't carry it so sent it straight to storage. I think it's this one...
I might give that a go later to see if I can wear that set without going over the threshold as it's probably better to wear all the pieces if I can. I'm now tempted to look for a build where I can fast roll then as I think that's probably what's been working out for me.
I almost took down the flamelurker last night. I’d managed to get into a groove with it, waiting for the right moment and then rolling past it and getting my attack in before he turned around. It was going great and then I made the mistake of looking down at it’s health bar, realising I’d got it down to 1/3 left and that’s when it all fell apart. My heart started beating louder, I started mistiming my rolls and then got trapped in a corner.
If anything though it’s shown I can do it. I think I need to not know next time and just concentrate more.
That burrower armour that I found was pretty good, especially on the fire resistance front.
@render Sounds like you are almost there. I was like that, got really close, like he had a slither of health left but he raged on me. I never even got close to repeating that when I faced him again, so hopefully you will fare better than me!

@JohnnyShoulder That does not bode well for me then. I might have another go and see if I can come up with another strategy. The soul arrows stagger it a bit but don’t do massive damage. I might try the old sticky white stuff next as I didn’t want to waste it but if stuck then there’s no point in keeping it just for keepings sake.
@render Just like with Returnal, people find different bosses difficult. There is a boss later on, Maneater, which my mate (who is probably a bit
better than me in these games) really struggled with, but I beat it (them) on my second go. So you never know, you could still do it!

@JohnnyShoulder I finally did it. Beat Flamelurker. Took me probably 10 goes tonight, some of which were over in seconds rather than minutes. I managed to whittle it down to a tiny fraction of health and then just stayed out of its way and magicked the literal c**p out of it. I’m glad to get that done but the next bit....WTF?? I was not ready for that 😆.
@render Man I do that so much where I am doing fine with a boss and then I look at their health bar and is throws me off my timing and I panic. So many times. 😅
Congrats on making some solid progress. I’ve not played this game but enjoy reading people experiences since I hope to play it one day.

@Th3solution Cheers 😀. You know before Returnal I wouldn’t have even contemplated this game as it sounded like it was way above my skill level. Having gone through that game though it’s given me a new appreciation for game difficulty and how rewarding it can be. I’m edging my way through this compared to some but I’m finding I’m maybe not as bad as I thought I would be at it.
Saying that I did just fall down the very same hole twice tonight and I wasn’t even fighting anything at the time 🤦♂️.
@render Lol, yeah if it’s like my experience with Dark Souls and Bloodborne, some of the deaths are simply just falling or being ambushed around a corner. Well, and the epic bosses. But yes - I’m not a particularly skilled gamer but I’ve discovered that the easy mode of FromSoft games is just grinding and leveling up, so if you play it slowly, it’s much easier, in my [very limited] experience.
And someone said that magic is really overpowered in Demon’s Souls, so I’m thinking I might try that route. 😄

@Th3solution That’s interesting to know. I’ve been using magic a bit and it helped me through that last boss battle but so far it’s more just chipping a little bit of health off of things. It’s good to have options if I get stuck though 😉
