"A corpse... should be left well alone. Oh, I know very well. How the secrets beckon so sweetly. Only an honest death will cure you now. Liberate you, from your wild curiosity." - Lady Maria of the Astral Clocktower.
@RogerRoger Oh, that’s helpful. It’s not like I’m not going to play SM2. I think I’ll go for it within the next month or two. I’m definitely putting MM over the first game, for the reasons you mentioned. I think there’s something inherently attractive for us non-superhero people to get that more intimate origin storyline. Plus, his powers were more fun to play with.
“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”
@RogerRoger Well, how can I not with that ringing endorsement? Should also be thematically appropriate since we're approaching Christmas! The Christmas music is already haunting my apartment. I'll make this the first thing I try out when I can.
tried to go back to my spiderman 2 game on gamecube this past april and couldnt do it, popped in ultimate spider-man instead and beat the game , so i dunno about that one.
Tagging @RogerRoger to share my thoughts about Spider-Man 2.
Disregarding my first disastrous hour of the game, I really enjoyed it! To say that it was completely bug-free after the first hour would be a lie though. I still encountered a fair amount of issues throughout my 27 hours of playtime. I still stand by that this is the most unpolished Insomniac game I've played. Never had any problems with the other Spider-Man games, the Ratchet & Clank games, the Resistance games and so on.
I feel like the game took a while to get going. Too many missions that didn't push the plot forward. Not to mention that I felt like I was at the end of the game and there was still around 5 more hours to go.
Those final hours were brilliant though. Playing as Symbiote Spider-Man, then Venom, then Anti-Venom Spider-Man, absolutely fantastic! I also really enjoyed MJ's final section that plays like a shooter. It made me realise that it's been a long time since I played a shooter and now I want to play one. Furthermore, playing as a darker version of Peter was awesome. I needed a cathartic outlet and I got it by playing as him. Playing as Venom was even more awesome though! He's definitely my favourite Spider-Man villain and I really hope Insomniac makes a Venom game now.
The side missions were surprisingly emotional. That mission where you helped a woman's grandpa genuinely made me teary-eyed. Or that mission where you set that guy's pigeons free was very sad. There even was a mission where you got to play as Hailey and experience what it's like to be deaf. The side content was overall a huge improvement over the first game's.
So yeah, I'd place Spider-Man 2 at the top out of the three Insomniac Spider-Man games. Very fun experience! It's far from my GOTY though. Just like with Assassin's Creed: Mirage, it didn't leave me any lasting impressions that made it stand out among the rest. However, I think this is the case especially for all games made by Insomniac. They are never anything special, they are just good games.
@LtSarge Not implying that you are saying that's a bad thing, but I would definitely take consistently good games from a developer, especially one that is a master of the technical side of games (bugs notwithstanding).
I'll forgive some of their earlier output when Sony was having them milk Ratchet & Clank to death, only to go the other extreme of late with only one per generation so far.

As far as bugs are concerned - I only had a few on my first day (before the patch that dropped a few days later) and exactly one today towards the end - which was literally patched 30 minutes later, lol.
Zero bugs in between.

I haven't really noticed many bugs but on a couple of occasions i had a blank loading screen and you could hear characters talking so i assume it was not planned.
@RogerRoger the only downside (and how serious this may be depends on the person) , is that it’s too short; like , really short.
a sequel would benefit it so much because it has so much potential. imagine an ultimate spider-man saga giving marvels spider-man a run for its money, id love that.
edit : forgot to mention that it felt like most of the game is chasing or racing , but if you can look past those two flaws it’s still one of the better spider-man games , i may give spider-man 2 another go over the holidays
I dont know what % i am at i have played a lot of hours and am only at the fairground i knew this would be a short (ish) game as reviewers have mentioned it so i am doing lots of side missions and just enjoying the game i am in no rush to complete it.
@Max_Headroom the fairgrounds mission was pretty badass , im not too far ahead of you , i haven’t played in about 2 weeks but that entire mission is one of the highlights of the game for me .
@Pizzamorg took me 40h to platinum
I've seen people do it in 25 but honestly, based on my own playthrough, while that's definitely possible, it seems rushed to me.
If you're not doing any of the side content, it's probably not very long though.

I am at the point of no return now in the story, I finished all the side missions, but I mostly ignored a lot of the open world busywork stuff. I am now going to try and clear as much of that until I start feeling burned out and then clear the last mission. I am about 20ish hours in according to my PS5.
Personally I haven't hated this or whatever, but I certainly haven't loved it. It is like the best bits from the first two games combined together, but somehow they are packaged in such a way, that despite being the best bits from each, they don't hit or land in quite the way they did the first time around.
It feels more imitation to me than innovation. That doesn't mean the game doesn't have some wow moments along the way, you don't get set piece moments like you do in Sony first party stuff really anywhere else, but I dunno, overall I just think the game is just a big "yeah its alright" shrug of the shoulders.
I'm looking forwards to replaying the first game again with the more simplified controls and combat mechanics, and significantly less frustrating boss battles. I am looking forwards to replaying Miles Morales to experience the weighty emotional punch that had, that feels so sorely missing here, despite best efforts to recreate a lot of those moments with new coats of paint.
