Lately buying a few games on my PS5 and as it comes out of pure coincidence, my last 4 games other than Hogwarts Legacy were GTA 5, SF6, GT7 and Tekken 8. From 5 to 8 😂.
Just like to hear your thoughts on this.
Cheers.

3, 16, 3, 24, 2077, 16, 7 😂

Can you crack the code? 😅

I'm hoping to see at least two brand new completely original IP's really take off this year or next. We are definitely due some new superpowered IP's that can then go on to be turned into endless sequels, tv shows and movies themselves 😁

@Kidfried yeeeeah. I feel a bit sorry for Banishers that is coming out soon. It is going to get absolutely buried in the mix. I feel like a few years ago I'd have been more interested in that than any blockbuster releases, as I prefered to play less mainstream titles, but now I'm on a run of playing mostly really good games and all time classics in the past few years, and I kind of only want to ever play really, really good games, and I get a bit bored if they aren't proven franchises or instant classics like Elden Ring, BG3 etc and FF7 is currently giving me that unique gaming itch where I just want to keep playing it already, so on this trajectory the VII Remake Part II is going to be quite tempting too 😬😅

I'm really hoping that Rise of the Ronin delivers though, as well as Stellar Blade, but I feel like they will have to be seen as at least solif 8/10's all around for me to buy them early on. But this has to be the year we start to see some truly great new IP's, it has to be. (We won't mention Pragmata and the no doubt impending "so sowwwwy we gots cancelled" promo vid 😅)

If a game which is a sequel (or part of a franchise) has a title with a sequential number in it, i don’t think it necessarily means the game is going to be iterative, uncreative, boring, or not trailblazing. Baldur’s Gate 3 and Final Fantasy XVI would be good examples. They pushed their franchise in different directions and definitely wouldn’t be considered lacking in innovation, and are closer to a new IP than some actual new IP’s. 😄 For example, what’s more “new” (as far as what the game accomplishes), Baldur’s Gate 3 or Lies of P? I haven’t played either, to be fair, but it looks like Lies of P is more like Bloodborne in a new skin, whereas Baldur’s Gate is something which is unlike anything seen before in the genre.

Because the sequential numbering in a game’s title does give off a ‘repetitious’ impression, I would usually rather a sequel go with a new title like God of War Ragnarok, A Plague Tale: Requiem, Batman Arkham City, or Horizon Forbidden West, etc. But I can see the value of “[insert franchise name] 2” if the game is literally a direct follow up narratively and has similar gameplay. So like BioShock 2 or Mass Effect 2. Or Gran Turismo 7.

Then you have series that do both — Life is Strange, for example where #2 is just out there despite a very tenuous attachment to the first, and the other two sequels are named uniquely.

But anyways, all this aside — I am a big fan of new IP’s. Even if some are retreads that copy other games, I like a fresh take on an established genre. And sometimes I like to see a sequel not mess with the core gameplay and story that made it popular. But unfortunately it’s tough to tell the difference between a #2 or #3 entry that’s just more of the same, and one in which it’s a whole new direction.

@Th3solution all very fair. I think we're all just riffing on a random article to be fair 😁

I think maybe from a Sony standpoint it is time for the next big original thing, though. We had things like GoT, Horizon, and Days Gone to some extent for the last gen, Uncharted, the last of us etc the generation before. Returnal this gen is fairly niche, but brand new. But Sony was always at the front of developing and marketing new IP's, supporting third party studios that eventually become first party because of their work on new things that became massive hits in collaboration with SIE.

Although I'd play another Uncharted game, I really want to see what Naughty Dog can do within another genre or setting. Bend have said they have a new IP in the works. Santa Monica were potentially working on something new at the same time as GoW Ragnarok? You know, things like that would be exciting to hear about soon.

There is hopefully that third party stuff coming with Rise of the Ronin and Stellar Blade, and I think we are all hoping that at least one becomes a huge hit, not just a decent seller.

I think gaming as a whole needs a new "Lara Croft" moment. Some new protagonist that influences beyond games. Sony has done a pretty damn fine job with Aloy, Jin Sakai, Nathan Drake, Joel and Ellie etc in recent years. But I'm interested to see who the next wave of break out characters will be, or if we will be lacking for a few years more

@Ravix Oh yeah, I get it. 😄

I have found myself frequently put off by playing so many sequels, but yet at the same time I just love them and some franchises I want to keep experiencing through new development strategies and creative visions.

My mind has been on the subject lately because I’m currently playing A Plague Tale Requiem and I continually find myself enchanted by the gameplay which feels very ‘TLoU’ and ‘Uncharted’ at times. And it just scratches that itch that has been left unscratched by Sony lately. 😅 So if you’re in the mood for Uncharted or a Naughty Dog style game you should check it out.

But you’re right, the last real Sony mascot type of character that we’ve seen is Aloy. And I think Sony wants to prop her up as the face of the brand, but it’s just not quite there. Spider-Man and Kratos are probably more in that role now and like you say, those are characters which are very old, from a conception standpoint.

Selene was never going to be that brand defining, as like you say Returnal is so niche. And I don’t think Jin Sekai has the wide appeal either. And you’re right — the other brands and the third party don’t have anything on that level yet either. The biggest games of the last few years are full of blank slate protagonists, or characters that are just not that universally appealing. If someone is going to do it, I suspect whatever ND has cooking will be the best chance. But who knows, maybe Concord will have a Master Chief character to get us all engaged. 😅
