@TheBrandedSwordsman I wouldn't class God Of War 2018 as Souls-like. The combat may have been a bit similar, but I didn't get that feeling from it at all when I played it.
Life is more fun when you help people succeed, instead of wishing them to fail.
Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.
@Jecht_Ultima Yeah, it’s 100% not a Souls-like and I think you’re spot on with the comparisons to the Arkham games. Like a sorta ‘Metroidvania-lite’ approach to revisiting areas with new methods of traversal and upgrades.
@TheBrandedSwordsman I'm slowly playing through the old GoW games atm, so far I've played GoW, GoW2, GoW:CoO & GoW:GoS. I'm enjoying them, obviously they're nowhere near GoW2018 in any regard bit fun nonetheless.
@JohnnyShoulder I'm kinda trolling you with the schedule at this point 😜.
@Jecht_Ultima@nessisonett so I agree with you both that it’s not a souls-like but I disagree about it playing like the free form combat of the Arkham games. Obviously everyone’s opinion is valid but I hate free form combat (Arkham combat where you get a vision alert above an attackers head which is a prompt to hit the block/counter button) but I love the combat in God of War 2018.
@colonelkilgore Well I wasn’t really talking about the combat in that sense. More that the structure of the game and the interconnected areas are similar.
@nessisonett ahh, I get ya. Now you’ve said that, I agree in terms of the structure etc... had never really considered it before but the 3D metroidvania-esque aspects of Arkham Asylum are definitely similar to God of War 2018. Imho, the minute-to-minute gameplay (the combat) of GoW2018 elevates it well above though.
I thought combat in Arkham was awesome and apparently so did all the other game developers because a ton of games tried to do a similar thing afterwards (and it worked).
@Jecht_Ultima@Voltan I’m not saying your wrong guys but it’s just a personal pet-peeve of mine that so many games of the last generation adopted that particular brand of combat. It was the one thing that I didn’t like about The Witcher 3... and ultimately put me off finishing it.
Don’t take this the wrong way, I just personally find free-form combat very very easy. Not trying to big myself up or anything like that but it just doesn’t take much focus or skill. As a result I find any game that features it a bit boring.
@colonelkilgore Honestly I’m even more bored of bad Souls copycats. Mortal Shell is downright not good and part of that was them copying Souls stuff badly. Freeform combat is at least hard to copy badly, it generally is serviceable at worst.
@nessisonett well as i alluded to in my posts, it comes down to personal taste. I made a point of saying to the free-form advocates that they weren’t wrong... it’s just my opinion that free-form is a monotonous chore. It is also just my opinion that souls-like combat is not. We’ve seemed to be doing the same dance on personal opinions since I’ve been on here... me saying that we’re all entitled to them and you poking the bear.
@colonelkilgore Interesting, interesting. The Arkham games are great though and the combat is brilliant. God of War has really good combat as well. Is it possible for someone to be a fan of both?
🤔
I'm not sure I'll ever play a Soulsborne game. I'm not a patient enough gamer plus I've come to the conclusion I really don't like Boss Battles in particular the ones where where you defeat a boss then it changes to something even worse and not just once!
Another thing I hate is those bosses that can basically kill you in one go whereas you have to chip away at them at what seems like hours. Makes you feel like a child armed with only a cricket bat going up against Godzilla!
Anyway not sure what I'm doing on this page, I don't even have a PS5. I'll leave you guys to it.
@Col_McCafferty yeah you can definitely be a fan of both... and even though I’m not a fan of the combat I do like the Arkham games (particularly Arkham Asylum).
I get you about Souls, it’s quite a marmite-like preference, in so much that if you are one of the minority who like them, there’s a high chance that you absolutely love them. We’re all different though, I just can not seem to enjoy turn-based combat at all... but I’d never suggest that people who do are wrong, they just like different things. I’ll continue to give turn-based combat a go every now and then though... and if Square would ever do a Sleeping Dogs sequel, I’d play some more free-form combat (in fact I do intend on finishing The Witcher 3 one of these days, so I definitely will be, even though it’s not my preference).
@colonelkilgore I like Arkham combat and also Souls combat, and also turn based combat. Heck I even like QTE’s, which are Arkham combat simplified.
But I’m less a fan of 2D platforming, RTS, and FPS. Also, I’m not much into fighters and combo streak building action combat like DMC. I just stink at chaining together long strings of complex button prompts from memory. It’s one of the least fun things in gaming. I do like a good rhythm game, when the button prompts are to the beat of music. But preferably with on screen prompts.
Also kind of agree with @Col_McCafferty that I’m not as much of a rapid fan of huge boss battles as most gamers are. I like a good boss fight when you get that dopamine rush at the end, but I really dislike ones that are just cheap damage sponges that are just illogically difficult. And do feel beat down like you say when they respawn into 3 or 4 different forms with a new strategy and just seems to go on forever.

@Th3solution fair enough sol, I definitely seem to be in the minority in regards to my feelings towards free-form combat but that’s no surprise to me. The system is obviously appreciated by the masses, it’s why so many games adopted it. And I loved both Arkham Asylum and Sleeping Dogs regardless of the combat system to be fair.
@Th3solution the boss fights in something like HZD are good because despite their size and strength they still have obvious weaknesses but the key is knowing how to exploit these whilst making sure you don't run out of health.
I finished inFAMOUS Second Son last night and the final boss battle just went on and on. They're obviously a firm staple of gaming and I'm not against them but it does seem like Soulsborne games are full of such encounters, indeed that seems to be the main draw, and in all honesty that sounds exhausting!
@Col_McCafferty it goes to show how different we all are... I live for such boss fights.
Funnily enough, I played through Remnant from the Ashes (a co-op looter shooter with a touch of souls) with a friend recently. He’s a hardcore gamer and has been for over 30 years but has only really played GTA’s, Battlefield’s and such for the pasted 10-15 years. It took him a bit of getting used to and if it wasn’t for me pushing the game hard initially he would’ve probably packed it it. He ended up loving it though and after one particularly tough boss encounter that took us around 15 attempts he told me he forgot all about how good a proper boss fight was.
@colonelkilgore Oh yeah, no judgment here; I think it’s interesting how we all like things differently. I actually am surprised at how universally the Arkham combat caught on because, like I say, it has always reminded me of modified QTE’s, which most gamers hate.
As for your friend’s experience with branching out, I can completely relate. Before becoming active on PushSquare I mostly played a few select genres, but having a little peer pressure through the good people here I started to try new types of games more and more. I’ve shared my Bloodborne experience before, but it was only with forum support that I got through the steep learning curve and got the encouragement to persevere and it became one of my favorite PS4 experiences. Since then I’ve made a point to constantly try to branch out and play a variety of games. Sometimes they still fall flat with me, but more often than not I end up liking stuff I didn’t know I would have.
But at the end of the day, we all still have our favorites and our unpreferred, and that okay too! 😄

@Col_McCafferty There’s an art to designing a good boss fight and many games don’t do it well. Either it becomes something gimmicky where you have to suss out a cryptic one shot trick to hit their weakness, or they have 10x the normal HP so it becomes just a grind-fest of a normal enemy encounter.
But FromSoft are master of the boss creating technique and the games revolve around that hallmark. And I think From’s mastery and popularization of big boss battles has pushed games to put more emphasis on bosses.
A good starter Souls-lite is Jedi Fallen Order, if you ever get curious to try the genre. It has a difficulty slider so isn’t as punishing.
Despite my not being as much into boss battles as a lot of the hardcore are, I still consider Shadow of the Colossus one of my all time favorites, and it’s exclusively boss fights 😅
