@NedStarksGhost So, the dodging isn’t very easy to time. After playing Returnal, Control, and other more precise action games, the dodge seems a bit unwieldy. Someone suggested that the dodge wasn’t really very effective and to use guard/block for better effect. I’ve used it mainly if I’m being peppered from a distance by gunfire. Otherwise, yeah - I barely use it and I just go all offensive. Combat is mostly spent jumping back and forth between character and mixing up spells with physical attacks.

I’m at chapter 7 now, and so far it’s getting better the further in I go. It’s more linear than I expected, but maybe it opens up eventually.

@Th3solution It is pretty linear to be honest apart from a few chapters that have a load of side quests.

But that’s how Midgar was in the original game too. It’ll be more interesting to see how they handle the later game where the original would have given you more freedom. I think it will still be pretty linear but that that’s probably the best option anyway.

Started The Last of Us part 2 this morning and I’m just BLOWN AWAY! As I always stress when discussing Naughty Dog games… these aren’t my typical preference when it comes to genre but there is no denying their absolute mastery of what they do. With the exception of gameplay (which is by no means bad… but in my opinion merely fine) it is the absolute highest order in every category. Graphics - it’s the most beautiful game I’ve ever played, soundtrack - is just pitch-perfect to reflect and accentuate the state of the world, the setting and the themes. Narrative and performances… my god! I’m just so glad I recently replayed the original so that everything is fresh in the mind because already there have been so much pathos, so many poignant moments, so much emotion that would have escaped me if I had simply relied on my 2014 playthrough.

This weekend the ‘Sony Bad News’ thread has been pretty busy with discussion around the sheer quality of its games vs the perception that Sony has poor customer services etc and I feel that, as with any serious debate there is right and wrong on both sides of the divide… but playing this today just solidifies my personal stance that if you choose to not play on PlayStation, you are choosing to exclude yourself from the absolute pinnacle of single player gaming experiences… and if gaming is something you consider important, why the hell would you choose to do that?

Tagging @Jimmer-jammer as I know we said we’d discuss this once I’ve played through it but just thought you might want to check out my initial thoughts.

@colonelkilgore TLOU2 was easily my favorite game last year (and that's the year with Tsushima, FF7 and Miles Morales). I did like the gameplay a lot myself - without spoiling anything, there are some really tense moments later on and I don't just mean the heavily scripted segments - but you're absolutely right in saying that it's the production value and performances that really sets it apart.
There are tons of really cool details that I'd be happy to discuss later (as they would be spoilers at this point).

@Voltan yeah, I'll definitely tag you once I've finished my playthrough... staggering game tbh.

@colonelkilgore it's a phenomenal game, it was a real pleasure to play through. You're making me want to replay both of them just talking about it!

Look forward to seeing your thoughts as you play through it.

@NedStarksGhost @velio84 it's gonna be hard keeping track of everyone as this game seems to have (rightly) had a similar affect to quite a few of us... I'll deffo try and tag you all once I finish though, I reckon it could be an interesting chat 👍

@colonelkilgore Glad to hear it’s living up to the hype. I’ve not played it yet, having held out to this point for the PS5 version which probably isn’t coming. Does this have a performance boost on PS5 at least? Everyone says that the game is so beautiful that it doesn’t need a PS5 version, but I would like a few of the perks like DualSense support. Not to mention, my backlog is sufficiently large that I haven’t felt rushed for that reason also.
After experiencing what you’ve done to this point, what do you think that Factions 2 will be like?

“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”

Voltan

@Th3solution They made it 60 fps on PS5 in May. Controller upgrades and such would be nice but I don't think they will be releasing a PS5 version just for that (and they definitely weren't planning any additional content).

Voltan

@Th3solution yeah it has a fram rate boost so its 60 fast with the PS4 Pro resolution (checkerboard 4k). It looks stunning! For me, tops God of War, Death Stranding & Ghost of Tsushima graphically.

Yeah it sounds like you're in no rush so maybe it'll be worth your while waiting for a true 4k PS5 remaster... and the dual sense features etc. All I would say is, if its been a while since you played the original... play it through again. Its not an absolute necessity but really adds power to the little things if you know what I mean.

Such a good game. I've still got that one trophy left on this to get all the collectables which I remember @Thrillho you just used a guide for. Will definitely be heading in to finish that off once I've got space to put it back on my PS5. I can imagine how good it would be with some haptics and 3D audio though.

Th3solution

@colonelkilgore Yeah, I made note of that recommendation and I might need to do that. I’m averse to replaying games usually, unless there is a trophy incentive or a major upgrade to experience, but I might need make an exception for TLoU. There are plenty of trophies I never got, but if I recall correctly the trophies in that game are really tough.

“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”

colonelkilgore

@Th3solution not so much tough but… ‘finicky’ would be the best way to describe them. I recently picked up the plat on my replay (had to play through it twice, on top of my 2014 run) was worth it though.

@render I also used a guide for some of the collectibles. Some are easy to miss - some others were like "how the hell did I miss this in my original playthrough" though

@colonelkilgore Ah welcome to the club, The Last of Us Part II is a special game and gaming experience, warts and all.

Replaying The Last of Us at present and getting close to the end (it's Winter).and I've enjoyed it even more second time round. I like the gameplay, it's gritty and tough and unforgiving of your mistakes. Like life.

I do think they improved upon the gameplay in Part II and upped the reality of gunshots and axes and ***** going into people skulls. Too much for some but for me it fits the tone perfectly.

I'll be replaying Part II again, maybe by the end of the year.

Col_McCafferty

NedStarksGhost

@Col_McCafferty I found it much harder to start with. I remember on TLOU I cleared a room of infected (clickers and runners) with a single brick and Molotov (the Molotov was so broken). Tried the same tactic in Pt 2 and boy did that fail..

NedStarksGhost

colonelkilgore

@Col_McCafferty yeah I definitely agree that they gameplay has been improved in 2 and wasn’t trying to imply it was bad at all… it just feels ‘decent’ I suppose compared to how unbelievably good everything else is I guess.

Jimmer-jammer

@colonelkilgore thanks for that! Sorry, took a break from Push for a few days (seems like I missed a whole lot). Glad you’re enjoying it thus far. Naughty Dog is simply on another level when it comes to making games. Part II is easily their ‘gamiest’ game as well, in my opinion. I can’t believe anyone that complains about it being an interactive movie has actually played through it in its entirety. Anyways, enjoy the ride! It’s a helluva rollercoaster.

@Keith_Zissou I think it's phenomenal buddy... The Godfather part 2 to The Godfather. So I guess I'm one of the few people that is actually enjoying the sequel more. Plays better for sure... and in my personal opinion is a better, far deeper story. That last part will undoubtedly trigger the masses... bit we like what we like.

... and as I mentioned to @Th3solution recently, playing the original recently so that everything is fresh in the mind was definitely the right decision.
