@johncalmc I'm not saying you have to like it or be happy with the direction they are going with the "Remake", but just because you don't like what they are doing doesn't automatically make it bad. You may think they have made a bad decision to take this in it's own direction and that it's sludge, but there are plenty of people that think the opposite and there's nothing wrong with that.

Personally, I don't care if a game is a straight remake with modern graphics and such or if it is it's own take on a classic. As long as I find it highly enjoyable, that's all I care about.

@nessisonett Do I think this going off on it's own path is better than a faithful remake? I'm undecided on that, but like I said above, I'm perfectly fine with this as long as it turns out to be really enjoyable for me like the first part was.

Honestly, if you don't like what they are doing, don't play it and go back to the original. It doesn't make it the wrong decision or that they are arrogant. You just wanted something they aren't giving you, which is fine, but it doesn't mean this won't be something special for people who are willing to continue to play this new take on the original and enjoy it for what it is. It's also not a sequel since it's not a follow-up to the end of the story of the original.

@colonelkilgore It certainly did feel random. I had read some of the posts again to see if I missed something. 😂

Put me down for “perplexed and slightly bummed that the new FF7 isn’t a remake, yet still excited to play them.”

It’s definitely a weird one, and honestly part of the reason I didn’t play Crisis Core long ago was because I heard about some of the storyline and how it affects FF7 and I didn’t want a bunch of weird backstory and characters I don’t know to taint my relationship with FF7. Yet, here we are with the remake/reimagining completely retconning the story and giving us that complex narrative I was avoiding, only ten-fold. Completely erasing arguably the most iconic and substantial gaming moment of the series and perhaps of the generation…

So since the plot line has gone off the rails anyways, I’ll probably be interested to play the Crisis Core Remake now. It all seems a bit like DLC on top of the base game at this point though.

@Th3solution The original FF7 will always still be there though, so the new versions are not magically making it dissappear. It's kinda like all the different versions we have of Batman or Spider-man.

I am a bit indifferent on the direction that they have chosen however, and am a bit disappointed that we are no longer getting a remake like we all were originally led to believe.

But I really enjoyed FFVIIR for what it was, and find it more exciting not knowing what to expect next, rather that just experiencing the same story with current gen production values.

@JohnnyShoulder Yeah, I suppose. It’s almost like they remake Spider-Man and Uncle Ben doesn’t get killed, or Batman and either Martha or Thomas Wayne don’t die. It’s what the MCU is doing in spades with the multiverse and it can be fun, so long as it doesn’t subvert the main underlying aspects of plot progress. It was probably just a mistake to use the word “remake” on the game series, because in video game lexicon that gives the connotation of what we got with Shadow of the Colossus, RE2, Demon’s Souls, etc. and what we expect to see with Dead Space.

@Th3solution TBF, they most likely did originally set out to remake FF7, but for whatever reason that has now changed.

What we traditionally think of a remake is most likely gone now, and in the last few years they have not all made with the same rule set. Remake is just a marketing slogan at this point to broadly set expectations

We could then get into the ridiculous situation of labelling each game like a 'Reimagining' or whatever, or having the same name then some poorly explained blog post about different about the new game.

It is just a load of noise over nothing really.

I remember for years they were (rightly) concerned about remaking FF7 due to the fear fans would reject whatever they did with it because of how beloved the original is. It was surprising they green lit the remake after all that time, but it looked, originally like they were going to be very faithful to it and really considered how to do it right. Then at some point they just changed their mind.

Definitely not the fan of "reimaginings" in general. If you want to tell a new story, tell a NEW story. A sequel, a prequel, a new story world, a story about other characters in the same world, or a deeper story about the same characters in a part missed originally. Rewriting the same story as some new adaptation comes across as lame fanfic supplanting the original loved story.

The problem with some of these older games is that the story, world, characters, places, and concepts are beloved, but the gameplay just doesn't hold up today due to the technology limits of yesterday. There's really a place for the old games to be remade so they don't get lost to time due to ancient mechanics from a technologically different past.

It's like reprinting Lady and the Tramp, so it's not forever lost on VHS, but they change the story for a more modern audience's expectations and tell you you can still get the original on VHS.

If I were to guess they weren't expecting to release the original multiplat when they announced this, and when they did and saw the sales, they didn't want remake to interfere with sales of the original when they could sell both as new at the same time and let the writers run amuck. As though they forgot these are the same people that kept KH's "story" going in 800 directions.

The FF7 remake announcement trailer said:

"But after the long calm, there are now beginnings of a stir. The reunion at hand may bring joy, it may bring fear. But let us embrace whatever it brings. For they are coming back."

I always took this as a clue that they were always going to be playing it loose with this project.

@Thrillho I find it a little funny that fantasy settings are expected to use British accents every time, because somehow doing anything else "wouldn't be authentic", even if the world is completely fictional and has nothing to do with Britain.
To be clear: I don't mind it at all, just think it's funny

Also: the only characters you can count on being in the game every time are: Biggs, Wedge and Cid

@Voltan but FF16 does obviously seem heavily inspired by middle ages europe though, both clothing and certain environments. I am guessing they'll use certain language (individual words or certain phrases) from that period too.

Are we going to have Darren and Lauren joining Clive on his adventures then? I also look forward to the Scouse and Geordie accents I assume are in the game too then.

They don't let people from the North East on games or TV or movies. Nobody understands a damned word we're saying.

@johncalmc Better than having the West Midlands accent just being used for the thicko peasants.

It was quite weird hearing so many Welsh accents in Elden Ring as well.

@Thrillho If I ever make a game I'm going to cast someone from the West Midlands as a nuclear physicist. Someone needs to stop this. It's not on.

@johncalmc That’s why I was so happy with Mimir in God of War actually being intelligent. Scottish people in games are either angry shouty drunks or creepy merchants. Reminds me of that video where the posh news guy tries to get the bloke from Middlesbrough to say butter ‘correctly’.

I'm going to give XV a try, as it's free with PS+ on PS5. I'm confronted by a big list with things to install. Now, I kinda don't want to be overwhelmed, so I'm actually in favour of the bare minimum experience. Are the "Episodes" like DLC in that they are separate from the main story? And what about the ROYAL PACK? Does it improve the main game? Is it end-game stuff?

Will be my first FF game by the way.

@Octane Interesting that FFXV will be your first in the series. It’s actually one of the few mainline games I haven’t played, even though I’ve been a fan since the OG FFVII. I figured most long-time gamers have tried something in the FF series by now, but I also can see how it can be overwhelming to try and get into.

Of course the good thing is all FF games are completely independent of one another, as far as narrative. The carryover with gameplay is also minimal, with just borrowed terminology for the naming of the elemental attacks and summons being some of the few similarities.

As for your query, I don’t know but I have heard the base experience within the Royal content is a bit shallow and does feel incomplete. I think there’s is a reasonable ending without having to play the extra episodes, but most people were pretty disappointed with the overall story, if my memory serves. The extra DLC episodes were also very hit-or-miss on quality, so I don’t know that the extra content really solved the issue anyways. I seem to recall there was one or two particular episodes that actually added important narrative threads, but can’t remember which it was. In fact, I want to say there was other planned DLC that just never got released because the game didn’t perform well enough to support any more added content.

Maybe someone else with first hand knowledge can chime in, but I think the episodes are all post-game separate playable entities, rather than seamlessly integrated into the story, even though I think some episodes feel like they are probably chronologically concurrent or occur before the main story. I don’t know though.

If you like retro gaming, I think FF7-FF12 are on PS+Extra (minus the online only FF11) and they are all excellent in their own way, with my personal favorites being FF7 and FF12, but opinions are all over the map. And as with many old games, I hear that time hasn’t treated some of the ancient mechanics very well.

I’ll be interested how you end up liking FF15 as a first exposure to the series. I’ve had it in my backlog for ages.
