@NathanUC Aha, I'm afraid that video means nothing to me. I watched my younger sister play WoW a few years ago and it was alot like that. I like to consider myself a pretty seasoned gamer but swoooosh went over my head.
I played my free month on FF14 and I thought it was okay. The raids are fun, I only did a couple though. Learning them was too much pressure for something I wanted to chill out playing after work haha.
@kyleforrester87 It's a roughly 15 minute fight with a lot of mechanics designed to kill everyone. In the video, both of the tanks died (not shown) because they failed to dodge an attack. This resulted in the boss going crazy and targeting squishy DPS/healers (1 hitting us) until everyone was dead except for one (my wife). Since she was a healer, the level 3 limit break (charges over time) for healers will instantly raise/heal the entire party. The boss was only about 20-30 seconds away from dying; had she not used the limit break at that exact time, she would have died and reset the whole encounter. Typically, the dps players like to use the limit break as soon as it's ready. Since it's shared by the whole party, you really only get 1 per fight.
All in all, I don't really find any of the stuff in FFXIV too hard to learn, but I've been playing it for about 4 years. This fight was pretty much a summary of all the content before it, so more like a 'final exam'. It can be a lot of fun, but frustrating when people have a hard time getting it right. It's casual enough for me to enjoy still, but I do tend to avoid playing the hardest content with random strangers.
To save our Mother Earth from any alien attack
From vicious giant insects who have once again come back
We'll unleash all our forces we won't cut them any slack
The EDF deploys!!
How we doing on FF12 then? I'm 35 hours deep, heading north on the map now. Done around 15 hunts, still got 3 jobs to allocate and 4 of my team are lvl 32-37. Need to bring the other two up!
I've just reached the oil rigs area where Vossler rejoins on the way to the tomb, so not too deep into the story I don't think. I am taking my time with the game, exploring every nook and cranny and levelling everyone equally. Speed button really saved this for me, the areas there are so big that it would've taken me absolute ages to walk through it all. I p*****d off some elementals on the way, which almost killed me a couple of times. The game is great, really, really love it after the disappointment that was XV.
@finalstan You're where I gave up on it the first time back when I played it on PS2. I remember I got killed by an elemental and couldn't get my head round why they put such an OP enemy there and never played it again.
I haven't explored absolutely everywhere as generally I think I'll be going back to do the hunts anyway. There's caverns under the oil rigs with high level enemies anyway so you'll need to come back for that.
And I'm not too worried about keeping everyone leveled as I move through each section, it's easy to bring someone who's weak upto scratch by putting them in with 2 high level guys and killing some powerful monsters with an EXP buffing accessory equipped. At least you still get LP without being in the main party.
@kyleforrester87 Fortunately it was a typo so not a real address and they are now in the process of re-shipping it to me ;_;
The sad part is that in the meantime I tried "World of Final Fantasy" that I had lying around...I'll just leave it at "I didn't like it" but my feelings towards it were a lot stronger.
@Feena Aha yeah the demo didn't sell me on that either. I do hope to try the full game one day as it might get good once you're invested. Still, given you don't like Kingdom Hearts your judgement of decent games is perhaps not as on point as I previously thought
@kyleforrester87 Hahaha, I surely don't!
And funny you mention it , WOFF has a strong kingdom hearts vibe in terms of characters and general atmosphere so maybe you would actually like it or at least elements of it.
@KratosMD Yep check the item you are equipping and you'll see they have abilities tied to them. If you unequip the item you will lose the ability. But if you gain enough ability points you'll learn the ability from the item, so even if you swap it out you'll still have that as a useable skill.
It's a pretty straight forward system - what it normally means is you might not want to equip that new powerful piece of gear as soon as you get it if it means you'll lose the use of an ability you haven't yet mastered!
Edit: then of course when it comes to actually equipping those abilities (either mastered or still learning from the weapons) you'll be restricted as to how many you can have at once. Each one has a certain cost tied to it. The higher level you are the more abilities you can have activated at once.
@KratosMD Pretty much, so sometimes it's worth keeping hold of certain gear to learn the skills later or even buy statistically weaker gear from shops to learn the abilities. That said it's not a system with an absolute ton of strategic depth. As FF's go it's certainly got one of the simpler upgrade systems, at least out of the ones I've played. Still, I really like it.
@KratosMD Thing is you're still tied up with set jobs in FF9, so Vivi is your Mage and you'll need to find an item with a Firaga ability for him to equip to have that ability available to him. Then if you get a item with Thundaga you can lose Firaga and equip the new item, or wait till you master Firaga and then have both. You can't really go wrong in FF9 as long as you have a white mage in the party though, and you get 2 options as far as that goes in the end.
@KratosMD Wheyyy really glad you're enjoying it. So much cool stuff to come and the ending is fantastic in my mind. The animation is really good, I've only begun to appreciate how good in more recent years.
How cool is Zidane, too? Such a likeable scamp!
Music is flawless. Was mesmerised by the world map theme the first time I played it!
I finally started playing FF12 Zodiac Age... It's so good! Better than I remembered it to be tbh... I am just very very annoyed with Van (and why is his voice acting so terrible in a game where everybody else shines?) but the sense of wonderment and the world building is just woah!
It also seems much fresher and modern than P5, which I just finished, and that being a ps2 game...i think we weren't fully ready for this the first time around.
@kyleforrester87 I envy you so much lol! Really this would transition from great game to all time masterpiece for me if Vaan and Penelo weren't in it ...it's not just them, it's that the game is clearly trying to be adult/mature and then they have their moments trying hard to teenify it.
The new musical score is also lovely! It's very different from Uematsu (or even Shimomura) since it's not really melody driven and more like a movie out, I swear I can hear some star wars here and there.
@Feena I'm at Cerobi Steppe at the moment and the soundtrack is excellent here. There is a great song that plays in some outposts and towns, there's an outpost in the Estersand where the kid offers you a place to sleep and it plays there. Really like it. It's not up there with some of the past instalments mind you but overall it is really nice.
As for Vaan, yeah he just doesn't bother me lol. At least he's upbeat! Penelo is kinda annoying but they don't have her saying or doing much so whatever. Funnily enough she's become my strongest character, White Mage/Shikari. Ton of HP and a decent attack with loads of healing spells!
