@Kidfried I haven't used the rewind function yet. For now I'm going to try to avoid using it, as I like to play with the more "classical" experience. But if things start getting too tedious without it, then I'll likely change my mind.
Good day to one and all, I hope you are all well? As you are probably aware from the thread title, Toy Story 2 has been added in as a bonus game for July. The game came a whisker close in the previous vote behind Stray and since the grand feline scifi journey has now left the plus service it seemed only just to throw in Buzz's PS1 adventure. Of course if you actually own Stray and are still playing it then that is completely fine and do keep your thoughts coming in as I love reading them. I know it's a little tight for some of you so I was thinking we can run until 7th August if that sounds agreeable to you all?
Some of you are eager beavers and have already started playing Toy Story 2 but for the uninitiated, here is a few details courtesy of HLTB 👍
Woody's been captured, and it's up to Buzz and company to track him down and return him to safety. Play as the fearless plastic spaceman, Buzz Lightyear, as you try to return the favour Woody bestowed upon you in the original Toy Story. A greedy toy collector has captured Woody, and you've got to command a motley troop of plastic toys, dolls, and stuffed animals to the rescue. Fans of the film will appreciate the same brand of humour, animations, and story that made the computer-animated adventure an instant classic. You'll make your way through just about every environment featured in the film, searching for clues, points, power-ups, and more. Featuring stellar graphics and epic gameplay, Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue is a 3D adventure that younger gamers and experts alike will be able to sink their teeth into.
Main story: 7 Hrs
Main + Sides: 7 Hrs
Completionist: 8 Hrs
Now, onto the second order of business. Quality Geezer has proposed that we might refresh the shortlist, what are people's thoughts on this? should we pare down the current list and throw in some fresh titles, completely refresh or stick for another month or two?
Thank you all for your participation, positivity around this and excellent discussion in regards to the games we play. I appreciate you all.
@AgentCooper Sounds like a great plan with the Toy Story 2 bonus, given how we had to rush through Stray (although it wasn’t too rushed given it’s relatively short runtime)
And thanks for your continued excellent organization of this club!
Regarding the voting for the latter part of August’s game, I don’t mind however you want to do it, either vote from the old list, create a completely new list, or something in between. One option might be let everyone pick one or two games from the old list to carry forward and also allow to add one new game to the list, or whatever. I know with the addition of new games to PS+ all the time that new options bubble up all the time.

@Kidfried I would second the outer wilds. It's a game I've been meaning too play for God knows how long and haven't got round to it for one reason or another
TMNT: Shredder's Revenge can be done in one sitting. It's really short. As is Little Nightmares. Both excellent games though if you decide to play through either of them. The latter has absolutely brilliant DLC's and a superb sequel too.
"A corpse... should be left well alone. Oh, I know very well. How the secrets beckon so sweetly. Only an honest death will cure you now. Liberate you, from your wild curiosity." - Lady Maria of the Astral Clocktower.
@KAIRU I played shredders revenge on game pass and really enjoyed it. I'd be happy too play it again on PS if we can arrange something in the club too play some multiplayer as I finished it solo. I'm intrigued by little nightmares as well, I bought it cheap before and never got round to playing it properly
@Kidfried@KAIRU@QualityGeezer The Club actually played Little Nightmares last August. It was a really good game, and quite different from what I was expecting. I was glad to have played it. I’ve kept my eye on the sequel. I keep thinking it will drop of Plus.
There’s nothing holding us back from repeating a game though, if enough people want to play it.
@ralphdibny Unfortunately, Mafia 1 and 3 were given out on PS+ but Mafia 2 has not yet.
Parenthetically… There’s a strange phenomenon with Mafia III in the store because when I went back to double check and searched the games in the PS Store it prompted me to buy it instead of the usual “download to console” button that shows up when you already have it in your library. But when I clicked on the game straight from my library it was available to download. Weird. Just one of those quirky things about the PS Store.

My vote for august game is The Ascent, Observer Redux or Undertale (all are on ps extra).
Ones that I've recently played but the club might like (feel free to pick them) are Endling (on ps plus) or The Wild at heart (on ps extra), the latter of which is similar to a pikmin game which has been sadly overlooked by the masses.
I've been playing some more Toy Story 2, and beat the second boss level. It took me a couple of tries to figure out what to do there, but I did it.
So far, the gameplay doesn't seem to be anything special. But I'm enjoying this. After having played some more intense games recently, it's nice to play something that's a bit more relaxed.
@Kidfried very solid list there! I've played outer wilds before but if there are a bunch of people that haven't, it might be perfect for gameclub format! It's mysterious and nonlinear with a story at the centre of it you can't help but keep pulling the thread of, combined with one of the best end mission/quest I've ever played. Edit, sorry am on my holidays and have missed a few of the posts, I think inscryption has been mentioned, similarly I've played that but would imagine that would work with gameclub format well too, though I am not much of a card game guy and got a little fed up of the actual mechanics by the end.
I’ve been a little preoccupied the last couple days, but it’s interesting to see everyone’s Toy Story impressions. It does sound like a game that is a product of its time. Without the movie tie-in, would it be as charming?

As for the upcoming month, we’ve had some intriguing PS+ inclusions lately, so I would modify my preferences slightly.
I’m interested in playing:
Death’s Door
Inscryption
Endling
Alan Wake Remastered
Trek to Yomi
And from previously, still have interest in:
Humanity
The Quarry
Artful Escape
Among a few others. There’s a treasure trove of good sounding games of various genres on PS+, not to mention all that’s available for purchase.

@Kidfried Does Toy Story 2 have any interesting way it changes the gameplay as you progress? Im assuming there’s not a mysterious or strong narrative present, so does it get too repetitive after a few hours?
And on the subject of Little Nightmares, I do think it’s a game you’d like, just based on my best guess. It’s not the best 2D platformer/puzzler on the planet, but it’s charm and unique setting do set it apart. But yeah, if you skip it then it’s not like you’re missing out on one gaming’s greatest hits, but keep it in mind for when a different style of platformer is calling for you. And it was actually one of the creepiest gaming experiences I’ve had over the last couple years. Much more shock horror than I was expecting.
I'm around 2/3 of the way through Toy Story 2, and plan to finish it whilst collecting all pizza tokens. I'm enjoying it, though it is a fairly generic platformer. If it didn't have the Toy Story story and characters, then it would have been a largely forgettable game.
@Kidfried I would be keen to try humanity, I played some Lemmings back in the day and would be interested to see a modern take on it. Meet your maker seemed like a really cool premise too. I actually think between base plus and extra, sony have done a pretty decent job of indies on the sub service this year. I'd be downt to play the quarry as well, though maybe that would be best saved for October 👻
I've now completed Toy Story 2, and collected every Pizza Token in it. It was a largely forgettable game, though I enjoyed it. I was in the mood for a fairly basic 3D platformer, and this fit the bill nicely.
@Kidfried I can't be sure, as I already had all of the tokens before attempting the final boss. But apparently, players only need 40 out of the 50 tokens in order to complete the game.
The game does say congratulations for collecting all 50 tokens, but that's about it (unless I missed a movie clip getting unlocked or something?).
Most of the tokens aren't that hard to get, but there's a couple of levels in particular that had long climbing sections, where it's so easy to accidentally fall back down.
