I agree that it's a bit besides the point to even consider the story in a series like Doom. Those old screens of texts in Doom, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter and Streets of Rage etc really managed to set the scene for me when I was younger though. Probably had a vivid imagination! I think the cartoon/films helped in the case of Mortal Kombat though!
I beat three levels tonight, which means I’m relatively close to the end. The last one I played seems to weirdly tie in with lore and stuff from across the series. Not sure I particularly care about DOOM lore (Metroid Prime, it is not) but I can appreciate that it was relatively well executed for this sort of game.
We’ve got a week left of Doom Eternal so I’m just checking in to see if the ones joining in think they’ll make it in time! We’ll start Mafia next weekend but there’s always a little bit of room for people to continue the current game if life gets in the way.
I'm on the final level, having finally stuck it to that sanctimonious hypocrite of a cult leader in the previous level. Faced a glitch in one of the encounters in this final level though. An encounter just wouldn't complete despite me killing all the demons so I got stuck between two barriers. I've quit the game and hopefully it fixes itself when I go back to it later!
@nessisonett looking forward to Mafia! I'm gonna try and finish the main campaign of Eternal today and make a start on The Ancient Gods
When I was looking up pics of a Cacodemon to Photoshop, it seemed like the enemy had taken on a bit of a life of its own. Lots of cute variations of it on Google image search already including a plushie! Might have to get one to err....cuddle at err....night 😂
I played the first level of Ancient Gods 1. It's much harder than the main game, even on the same difficulty. I'm really glad I waited to play Doom Eternal until it had all came out because I'd hate to have to not only relearn the game but also do it on what is ostensibly a difficulty that is harder than the standard "Hurt Me Plenty"
It's also quite a long level, I imagine because I died a lot though. I can't remember if it's 3 or 4 levels in this first DLC but I guess I'll appreciate the longevity of it by the time Ive got to the end. Will crack on with it tomorrow!!
I think in the main game, I didn't "reload from checkpoint" more than say, 4-5 times for any encounter. I died more than that because I would have used lives but that's the maximum amount I properly died. I only got offered (and turned down) the sentinel armour two or three times during my playthrough. I think the most I've died in an encounter in this first level of Ancient God's is probably closer to ten times which shows the increase in difficulty.
I think the enemy I hated most in the main campaign was that marauder thing that shot out spirit dogs and had a green glint at the moment when you could stagger him.
In level 1 of ancient god's part 1, you fight two at once 😭. In level 2 you fight one that's been empowered by a buff totem and you can't destroy the totem until you beat him as it's locked away behind a barrier.
Anyway, just one more level of Part 1 to go which I'll do tomorrow. Hopefully part 2 is easier because this one is killing me and I'm only on Hurt Me Plenty! 😅
Oh my days, im doing a slayer gate in the third level of AC pt.1. it's ridiculous. 2 arch viles and all their spawns, followed by 2 blood Maykrs (new enemy) and 2 doom hunters, topped off by a possessed marauder (spirits are a new enemy that possess and buff other enemies, you have to kill the possessed enemy then use the otherwise fairly useless microwave beam to then kill the spirit).
-_- this is going to take me a while I think!!
Edit: Christ almighty I finally beat it! That was ridiculous
@nessisonett I literally didn't use it in the main campaign apart from when I initially got it. The final boss fight of Ancient God's 1 uses it fairly extensively 😅
I guess it makes sense to have something that is weak toward it. Almost everything else has a rock-paper-scissors like element to it and you use basically every gun, if not every mod.
The guns/mods I was using for most of the game were:
Super Shotgun/Meathook - which was my favourite weapon by a long way. I loved the Meathook aspect of it.
Heavy Cannon/Quickscope - need this for lots of things but especially the maykr drones
Chaingun/Turret - was really good for ripping through stronger enemies
Plasma Rifle/microwave - didn't use microwave until the DLC
Ballista - didn't use the mods on this very often, it was good enough without it. Wasn't this called a Guass Cannon in '16 too?
Rocket Launcher/lock on - I used this a lot too, especially when I ran out of shotgun shells.
BFG - I used the Unmaykr a bit but it would always leave me with under 30 rounds when I finished off a big enemy so I preferred using the BFG solely so I wouldn't get left with a useless amount of ammo. That's if I had to use it
But yeah, finished Ancient God's 1 now, hopefully 2 isn't nearly as hard 🤞😭🤞😭
I think Ancient God's Part 1 on Hurt Me Plenty (normal) difficulty is as at the top end of how hard a game can be before I'm not willing to play it. Admittedly I stuck this one out because I want to play the last Doom game and find out more of the story. It's worth it for the story alone though, it's an excellent follow up to Eternal - lore wise.
I don't play a lot of shooters but this one seems so involved and clever in how it's designed and is genuinely a lot of fun. It's way better than like CoD and stuff like that which I find quite generic. Still worth a play if it's a PS Plus game but it's just a time waster, I'd never say that CoDs were really good games. Is Doom the only shooter like that? Or are there other shooters that have either similar or different but clever mechanics to them?
@ralphdibny Titanfall 2 springs to mind. Really good single player campaign. Probably over a bit too quickly, but definitely one of my favourites from last gen.
Life is more fun when you help people succeed, instead of wishing them to fail.
Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.
@JohnnyShoulder that's a good shout actually. I've played that already and I thought it was pretty good. Definitely more unique than the bog standard shooter but not as unique as Doom. I wish the campaign had incorporated more of the moves like the grapnel gun from the multiplayer as I don't really play MP that much.
@nessisonett oh yeah I suppose. I have played New Order before but I don't remember it being that intricate but then again, I don't remember a lot about it at all. I think I am going to play all of them from Wolfenstein 3D onwards soon-ish though, like I did with the Doom series.
I had a very quick dream this morning before I woke up. id Software had announced that they were making a video game of Shang Chi and the Ten Rings in the style of Doom. I quickly wondered if it would be Xbox only before realising it was a dream and waking up. I think I been playing too much Doom 😅. Oh well, time to start Ancient Gods Part 2!
@JohnnyShoulder I recentishly bought the first two metro games for like a fiver. I remember when the first one came out, not sure if it was on console but I don't think I had a modern console then anyway but I just remember it looking really good and thinking I'd never have a PC good enough to play it
@ralphdibny I never played the first two games as I came across a glitch which halted my progress in the first one, but I think Exodus plays a little bit differently than the prequels.
