@kyleforrester87 I forgot to mention the police car with a built in rocket launcher as an example of future tech.

But seeing that pic you've posted, I now realise I completely misremembered it and it's just a dude hanging out a window or a sun roof with a bazooka!

See ya!

@kyleforrester87 Demolition Man is the ultimate 90s evolution of 80s future action movies.

@nessisonett yep I was thinking about that one a lot, too.

Played a bit of SOR3 today and absolutely the games must be set in the future since the story is about a bunch of human looking robot imposters taking over the city! I still reckon (or want to believe) they weren’t shooting for that with the first 2, though.

Can’t remember if 4 leans heavily into that stuff. I think it has a robot you fight?

@kyleforrester87 4 feels like modern day to me if we’d gone a good few years from the alternate 80s vibes of the older games. Slightly cleaner city but still with a grimy underworld and possibly a police state.

Been an absolute rollercoaster bunch of days for me. My dog got put down. I discovered a wasp nest in my flat I realised I noticed months ago but didn't register what I had seen somehow, got an exterminator coming tomorrow I hope. Received my Spider-Man 2 PS5 controller and I'm currently playing Starfield.

@Pizzamorg I’m really sorry to hear about your dog being put down. We had to put our dog down in August after 14 years so I can relate somewhat.

Sorry to hear it happened to you as well. My girl was 13 here. She had options, surgery etc. But it was meant to be intense, with a long, hard, recovery. And may only buy her a few months for all of that. It felt selfish to put her through that. We thought it might be time. Then she stopped eating and drinking, and we took it as a sign that she was telling us it was okay to let go.

@Pizzamorg Yeah, it’s a really tough situation to be in. Our dog had lost a lot of weight even though he seemed to be eating plenty, albeit he wouldn’t be able to eat everything at once which led to birds pecking at it. He having trouble breathing at times too - he was starting to sound a bit like a turkey - and he honestly looked he didn’t really know what was happening to him.

It’s really sad and you obviously don’t want to lose them but putting them down is what’s best for them. It’s not fair otherwise.

Yah she had been slowing down for a while, not having as much energy and stuff, but we thought it was just age. And then she suddenly just deteriorated really quickly. She had a seizure, seemed like she could barely breathe etc turns out there was this mass in her chest crushing all her organs, and it restricted her breathing so much and caused her so much discomfort she was just stuck. She'd force herself to stay upright until exhaustion would literally override her discomfort and she'd lay down.

@JohnnyShoulder Honestly would be for the best. Part of the discontent is around the use of AI too, there needs to be protections in place.

@nessisonett Yeah there is talk of that was one of the reasons why Nintendo moved on the guy that voiced Mario. But I don't think Nintendo would be that shady.

@Pizzamorg Yeah, it's really sad. It's really tough making that decision but in the end it's best for them.

I didn’t know where to pose this question without it seeming like I was trolling, so rather than discuss it on the Nintendo and Xbox threads I’ll drop it here where my genuine curiosity won’t come across as negative —

But is it possible that there’s a double standard going on and Tears of the Kingdom and Starfield are getting a pass for being capped at 30 fps? Gotham Knights and A Plague Tale Requiem got crucified for launching at 30 fps with no performance mode. In fact, games like Jedi Survivor, Final Fantasy XVI, and Elden Ring have performance modes which got heavily criticized at launch because the 60fps wasn’t stable sometimes, but the 30fps ran perfectly fine.

Personally, I’m not an fps snob and I often choose fidelity mode anyways if the game has some great ray tracing or 4K visuals. The vast majority of gamers sort of look down on those of us who still use 30fps options when available.

It’s just strange I haven’t seen criticism for these games having no performance mode. Wondering what the narrative would be if Spider-Man 2 launches locked at 30 fps. There would be riots in the street.

@Th3solution Is it not more that they’re really great innovative games despite the frame rate? Switch can be discounted completely for technical arguments and that’s ok, the games speak for themselves even if they’re running on old hardware. Whereas Spider-Man 2 looks good but it also looks like it’s not going to forward the industry in any meaningful way, it’s exactly what you think it’s going to be. Therefore the expectation of a polished game is more important as it can’t win you over with sheer innovation. Tears of the Kingdom is one of the most impressively coded games I’ve ever seen, it borders on black magic so any insinuation of lazy devs due to the frame rate would be laughed out the door. Starfield is one that I’ve been avoiding spoilers for but there’s absolutely no way that they would avoid launching with 60FPS unless it was necessary to maintain the scope and vision of the project. Especially considering there’s the Series X as well as the Series S, if the game was scalable at all then they’d have done it.

@nessisonett Yeah, by all accounts TotK is quite special. Also, in truth, it’s a last gen game so I don’t think the community expects 60 fps 4K performance on the old Switch hardware. It’s just hard to reconcile “30 Fps is unplayable garbage and gives me a headache” with “this is the greatest achievement in gaming”. I suppose both can be true, but… hard to resolve those in my mind.

Starfield is a little different, because reviews so far don’t point to groundbreaking innovation that I’ve seen yet. Perhaps I’m wrong. So I just think expectations are low, performance-wise, because… Bethesda. The big reports from early players are shock and surprise at how few bugs there are, which means the bar was kind of low to start with, I guess.

Both games will win a lot of GOTY awards, I have no doubt. And probably will be very deserving of such. But I think we can see the “30 fps is intolerable crap” narrative has been largely overblown and I think is mostly an opinion held by enthusiasts only. I don’t know if the average gamer cares about fps.

How did I never know that Samara in Mass Effect 2 is voiced by Billie Eilish’s mum?
