@colonelkilgore it’s a good time to be a JRPG fan.
Btw Colonel I saw that you and the captain played Blasphemous (1). Worth playing?
PS Access put up a livestream of the second game & it looks brilliant.
Might just jump into that if it’s a self contained story otherwise I’ll play the first game.

I actually haven’t played Blasphemous as of yet, I do own it though so maybe that’s why I came up as ‘also played this’ on PSN. For what it’s worth, I do think that I’ll really like it though, I’ve become a pretty big fan of metroidvanias this last year or so and the aesthetic of Blasphemous looks incredible. If you do play it definitely tag me with your thoughts 👊
@colonelkilgore The second game looks incredible from the stream. The last boss fight they showed looked like something straight out of Bloodborne. I’ve downloaded it, but coming off Death’s Door I might sit on it for a bit.
Will let you know my thoughts when I get to it!

@nessisonett Will do. Got it downloaded now, but going to let a week or so pass after Death’s Door. Probably very different games, but they seem to invoke a similar feeling.

As a tennis fan I'm looking forward to the US Open starting tomorrow. A bit gutted Sky has got the coverage this year (In UK) as I can't see how their coverage can be as good as Prime who do a great job of having live coverage of every single game to watch whenever you want.
@BearsEatBeets Ive no interest in the tennis, but I like how with Prime you can continue watching a match on a tablet or similar if you are away from the TV. I believe with NOW TV you need a separate subscription to the mobile service.
Life is more fun when you help people succeed, instead of wishing them to fail.
Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.
@JohnnyShoulder Their tennis coverage and how good it is, is a big reason for why I continue to subscribe. Similar to when they have the football, it's all so easy to use. Fortunately I have Sky Sports but I don't find their app (or desktop player) as intuitive or impressive to use when I'm not watching the main channels through my Virgin box.
Anybody watch the gameplay of Soulframe, the new game from the Warframe Devs?
Looks pretty good, f2p pve as well.
Hasn't been announced for ps5 or even a release date for pc but it is one to keep an eye on.
30 minute demo on IGN if anyone is interested.
What year do you think Streets of Rage is set? The answer, maybe, is out there. But to me, SOR1 is 89, and SOR2 is 90 (there is, certainly, only a year between them).
But I also think SOR1 could be 91-92, with SOR2 a year after.
What do you reckon? Any official confirmation? Perhaps they are set the years they released.
If it's 19XX then I reckon its a "near future" kind of thing. Dystopian media at the time was always pretty urgent in its time scale, like the world is always days away from collapse
If 20XX then pick a year out of the last 5, I'm sure you'll find something similar going on 😂
@ralphdibny it doesn’t say in game, to my knowledge - do you really get the impression they are near future, though? I dunno, I always got the impression they were “current” at launch, at most.
@kyleforrester87 I'm Gona check the opening and closing texts later, I was sure it was a 19XX jobby and they were suppose to be in an indeterminate year. I assumed future but I suppose xx could be the past or just a timeless period. But yeah I could be misremembering
I thought near future because it has a near future dystopian feel like many films at the time like escape from new York, RoboCop, mad Max, the beginning of dawn of the dead, maybe even the warriors. I'm sure there's more I can't think of right now.
I'm pretty sure that guy is full blown robot in sor3!
@ralphdibny I completed 1 the other day, and played the intro on 2 - I am sure no year is mentioned though. Perhaps if you can find official DOBs for the characters we could work out the year because it does mention their ages at the start of SOR1!!
I reckon if SOR1 and 2 we’re meant to be near future there would be more futuristic looking environments and details, but it’s all contemporary looking cars, motorbikes, arcade cabinets, punks etc with no effort as far as I can see to predict elements of the future.
I've had a look at the opening texts of 1&2 and there's no mention of the time period (except something along the lines of "one day this happened")
I've also downloaded the manuals for 1-3 and no mentions in there either.
Also the characters ages are listed but not their DoBs
So really, I have no idea where I got this notion that it was set in the near future. 😅 Maybe I got 19XX mixed up with Mr X or something 🤷♂️
Its not a hill I'm willing to die on as I can find no evidence but I will continue to believe what I do currently anyway 😂 because it does me no harm.
I think it's probably to do with the atmosphere being similar to something like Escape from New York.
Also the rampant crime, the fact a city is controlled by criminals in the legal sense. I'm sure it has been a thing at times in history but it's not something I am very much aware of so it always seemed dystopic to me.
Also large groups of neon punks strikes me as both futuristic and dystopic. I feel like like such widespread homogenised identities is a sign of a need to belong to a certain group or community for fear that any difference or contrary look or belief could lead to danger to an individual.
I know Escape from LA came out later but that film features similar factions or groups of people on a widespread scale. Like your either this group or your that group.
Plus neon, it's very Blade Runner-y.
So the cinematic influences that have led me to believe it's set in a near future include Escape from NY, Blade Runner, the future bits of Back to the Future Part 2, Robocop, mad Max (a bit), the opening scene with all the armed police in Dawn of the dead (I think it's Dawn and not day), the TMNT cartoon and maybe the movies and possibly the warriors but I'm not sure if that has a contemporary setting or not.
I duno lol, I never visited an American city that was entirely run by criminals in the late 80s/early 90s so maybe from my comfy suburban Greater London home as a child, SoR always seemed very nightmarish/futuristic/dystopian 😂. My brother and I actually used to play it on the Mega CD as he had a compilation disc with SoR and a couple other games on there
I played through them all again a couple of years ago in prep for SoR 4 on game club.
I played through 1&2 in 3D on the 3DS and 3 on the MD collection for switch.
I will say that if you make it to 3, dim your TV/monitor screen for the final boss. There's some horrific purple countdown thing that flashes on and off which left a ghosted image of itself on my monitor for a few hours after 😂
Also try and play it with something that has save states because that boss isn't worth a damaged display if you end up dying at some point 😂
@ralphdibny I did think you might have remembered the X being from Mr X haha.
I was thinking specifically of Escape From New York too, I was going to use it as an example in my earlier post. Because I think EFNY, and other films like Bladerunner etc, try to imagine what future tech might look like, while obviously being a product of the 80's.
The design of the police car for example is straight out the 80's. I think they'd have tried to put some crazy spin on it if it was meant to be set in the future, especially following the turn of the millennium (I'm thinking the flying cars from Bladerunner, or the sort of vehicle you might see in Judge Dredd). I think all the neon lights in the game are just as a result of those colours (and "future tech") simply being popular in the 80's. Which is why I am inclined to say the games are actually set a couple of years earlier than the 90's, when they released, as we started to move away from that sort of stuff as we moved into that decade. It's almost like they were slightly nostalgic as soon as they came out. But maybe that's just the nostalgia I now feel playing them!
