Yousef-

Ah, no worries. 😝
I actually haven’t seen Schindler's List in a while, I’ll need a refresher on it. There were a lot of movies I just happen to catch on tv rather than buy.

Wow. "Megalopolis" made less than "Borderlands" on its US debut over the weekend. Money well spent, Francis.

Yousef-

Any money spent on borderline was money not well spent.
Edit: meant “borderlands”, of course. But to be fair, that movie does make you go borderline insane. 😂

@Hogs-of-War-General So I checked the planned theatrical releases for October here in Norway and there were only two, which is simply criminal. And the two are the re-release of Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Smile 2, neither of which has me especially excited (I never was a huge fan of TCM). I'll probably see them both, though (I have a movie pass type thing where I can see as many movies in the theatres as I want for a flat fee).

Can't think of any upcoming horror digital releases I'm waiting for either, so I suppose I'll be relying on my disc collection and existing digital releases I've missed for my October horror fun.
From my collection; I think it's time to break the plastic on The Blob, The Fog, Dog Soldiers and the Universal Classics Dracula, Frankenstein and Wolfman, These will all be re-watches, of course.

As for digital, I I guess I'll see what I can find. I'm also following @Pizzamorg's posts (keep them coming, please ) for inspiration

Ohhhhh! Is it the original TCM that they are showing??? The original is such a legendary film and is extremely influential in the genre. Movie passes are great when there are movies to see, I have something similar in the states.

Which version of the The Blob and The Fog do you have? I want to get The Blob from the 80s on blu ray but it's always pricey. Can't go wrong with the Classic Universal Monsters!

@Yousef- In a strange coincidence, this just popped up in my YT recommendations!

Heh, worth opening in another tab! Curios to watch it.
It’s even uploaded five hours ago.

@Hogs-of-War-General Yup, it's the original TCM that's showing. No denying its status as a highly influential classic, but it never really clicked with me. Maybe seeing the restored version on the big screen will change my mind.
As for The Blob, it is the Collector's Edition of the glorious 80's remake with Kevin Dillon and Shawnee Smith. The Fog is the steelbook release of the original Carpenter classic with Adrienne Barbeau. Both 4Ks from Shout Factory.
Speaking of The Blob, there's a 4K+BluRay steelbook releasing tomorrow (Oct 1) in the states, if you're in the market for those kind of releases

Hogs-of-War-General

@FuriousMachine That's awesome and yeah restorations can do wonders!

Ohhh how do they look on 4k? And specifically how do they look from Shout Factory?

Just looked it up and there is! I'm not big into steelbooks, especially the costs, but the 4K collectors edition of The Blob has me tempted haha! I have only seen the Blob once about a decade ago and it stuck with me. Need to watch again!

Watched a really fun one today called Sting. From the same guy who helmed Wyrmwood and Nekrotronic. Dunno how this guy always makes his films look so good despite their modest budgets, but he does it again. Depending on your tastes there may not be enough scares and may be a little too much family drama, but I thought it was well performed, has a satisfying conclusion, it works with its budget limitations rather than against them and at its heart thrums a surprisingly affecting emotional core. Don't watch if you are scared of spiders.

Watched a few movies on digital this weekend.

First out was Cuckoo, a horror movie about a teenage girl who, after her mother's passing, has to move with her father and his new family to a resort in the Bavarian Alps, a resort run by an eccentric friend of her father's. It was an interesting movie that flirted with Lynchian weirdness, but didn't commit to it fully and, as a result, I felt it sort of didn't really know what it wanted to be. A lot of dangling plot points that seemed a bit random didn't help either. Not a bad movie, but I felt it could have been so much more. Dan Stevens is frickin' awesome as the eccentric Herr König, though.

I finally got around to see The Northman and I liked it. It's only my second Eggers movie and, as I've mentioned earlier, I was disappointed by The Witch after all the praise it got (I will revisit it, though. Sometimes the wrong mood and/or the wrong expectations can negatively impact your experience). As for The Northman, though, I didn't love it. It was a bit predictable and I remember thinking it was an interesting take on "The Lion King" Still, beautifully shot, fantastic cinematography and good actors (the accents were all over the place, though).

Finally, I saw Elvira: Mistress of the Dark. The only previous exposure to Elvira I had was through the Horrorsoft game way back when, and then, only briefly. Not sure if she had much exposure outside of the US, but here in Norway we were mostly unaware. I recently read in a review of her autobiography that Cassandra Peterson was far from the bimbo I mistook her for and I became interested in learning more and decided to watch the movie and read the book.
And I so wanted to like the movie, but alas... too much a product of its time, I guess. The Elvira persona was somewhat different than what I was expecting (in a good way) and it did have a couple of good jokes, but for the most part, the humour was a bit too cringey for me and the plot was exceptionally weak. I do believe, though, that if I'd seen it when it came out, there is every chance I would have loved it and it would have been a nostalgic favourite.
Still looking forward to the autobiography, though

@Hogs-of-War-General I'll let you know once I've seen them They are a few of many 4K discs in my collection that I've yet to check out in their 4K glory.

@Pizzamorg Sting sounds like it might be right up my alley and it's available for streaming on Prime Video here, so I'll definitely be checking it out!

Hooooly sh*t Megalopolis was bad. Like ‘The Room’ bad. It’s hard where to even start. Everyone’s weird delivery? It all looking like a cutscene from a PS3 game? Auntie Wow?

The thing is, I did feel more watching it than a hell of a lot of recent blockbusters. Coppola has funded this movie out of clearly any reason except to make money. I’d be more praising except the movie’s rubbish and he was harassing women on set.

@Pizzamorg I just watched Sting and I loved it! Charming and full of heart, like you said, and appropriately gory. Loads of fun! It also has the perfect setup for how the creature can go fairly unnoticed for so long. I've never heard of the filmmaker before, but I will definitely try to chase down his other works, as this was top quality on a fairly low budget. Excellent recommendation, thanks for bringing it to my attention

Pizzamorg

Really glad you enjoyed it @FuriousMachine. Out of their other two films (that I've seen anyway) I'd recommend Wyrmwood first. It is a zombie movie, but a very different kind of zombie movie and its just straight up cool to be honest.

Has anybody seen the director's cut of "Alien"? It's actually shorter than the theatrical version but I seem to remember that Ridley Scott (in somewhat bizarre fashion) later disowned the new version and claimed to prefer the original.

LN78

Yousef-

@LN78 you’ve got me curious 🤣
That’s a new one for me.
Haven’t been in alien mood since forever but I may give it a loot.

Hogs-of-War-General

@LN78 Yeah I have seen both versions as I own them on bluray. It's been awhile since I saw the theatrical cut but I recall liking the original theatrical version as the pacing is better in my opinion. I also saw the original twice this year. Once at home and once in theatres for the 45th anniversary re-release which was incredible by the way!

LN78

@Hogs-of-War-General I've just noticed there's an option to play either version when you fire up the 4K blu-ray. It's interesting because typically Ridley Scott director's cuts represent significant improvements over the originals. I might stick with the theatrical in this instance- it's one of my all time favourites. I'm still frustrated about the lack of an Atmos track on the disc, though.
