I found that playing my Vita (which is usually late at night while everyone else is asleep) that I've been nerfing the experience a bit by lowering the volume. I've never spent much time playing games with earphones but I thought it was time to get something good.
I already own various sets of earphones ranging from turtle Beach M1's to 'in the box' Samsung headsets and tend to switch between them dpending on the situation. I tend to lean towards Sony earphones at the £30.00-£40.00 mark for my main audio needs, so I wanted good value and overall excellent performance, and boy did I find it!
The Sony LiveSound MH1C headset. (NOT to be confused with the MH1, which is Sony Ericsson, and uses a different handler for the wired remote function found on older SE Xperias).
I got it for £15 on ebay, new but bulk packed- seriously, these things are the sale of the century for me! I compared them with a friend's very expensive Shure IEMs and found them actually incredibly competitive, give the price difference of upwards of £200.00, I'm a very happy chap! They have the LiveSound functions for Xperias, but fine just as a wired headset without any additional software.
They sound great in all situations and are my daily listeners via my Walkman (the bass response from the inbuilt bass boost on the Walkman is like nothing I've ever heard. Fidelity is amazing, nothing gets muddied and the driver's seem to have no ceiling when it comes to distortion from the bass heavy EQ, which mackes minced meat out of the Turtle Beach buds) and Note II.
Playing on the Vita is also, quite wonderful with these. WipEout's getting the most out of them at the moment, but for £15-even if I'd paid 4 times that- these are the best earphones I've ever owned. While I certainly don't want to say the speakers on the little black beast are rubbish, they just don't compare.
This is probably no revelation to some of you, but I'm so used to playing with either a 5.1 or even just stereo speaker set up, that wearing a VERY good set of earphones to play really took me by surprise.
Given this, I've decided to grab the Pulse Wireless Headset (Elite Edition for our American amigos), I don't have the PS3 to go with, but they'll work wired for the Vita, and wireless with the dongle for everything else.
So yeah, there you go, if you're after a new set of quality earphones, before you lay out the big bucks, grab a set of the MH1Cs- you will not regret it!
Best headset I've ever owned, with best sound in/out was a pair of logitec wrap around ear headphones for 20 bucks. they didn't have the bass like all modern headsets seem to. but was crystal clear.
BTW for best wireless gaming headsets, Astro is the way to go. They are pricey but you will never get beast sound or customer support than them. But the pulse headset does sound great. But know can get one that's just a different brand and save some money.

Were they silver/gray/transparent with loops that sort hooked over your ears? If so, I still have those too! ;-p
Don't need anything as involved as an Astro, I have a miniamp around somewhere if I need one anyway. Also, I want this for the Vita really, so Wireless doesn't really matter. If they're supported by the PS4 then that would be a plus- and I don't want a boom mic.
I've been using the Pulse Pro headset daily since it was released (I use it as work headset/headphones). There are some cracks on the plastic that wholes the headphones to the headband. I fear they don't have much time left in them

If that's all that's wrong with them you may as well try to repair. Some resin should sort it out.

My Pulse headset arrived st the office today. Not had much time to play with them but initial impressions are very good.
Really like the build- nice looking, not too big or heavy.
Tried them unpowered with my Walkman and listened to the opening of The War of the Worlds New Generation in 320kbps with no extra EQ settings. Really clean, crisp, full soundstage.
Got in a couple of laps with WipEout 2048, again really nice sound. Tried them powered with the Bassimpact on, on the normal 'game' setting WipEout doesn't make much use of it, but the most bass in the game comes from the music. Speed pad hits do thump up though. I tried some other modes and varied the intensity of the Bassimpact-and while WipEout may not be the best game for the feature, it's a decent feature I think. The pulse is good, will put it through the wringer later on with a few other games; Uncharted, Gravity Rush, SFxT, Rugby Challenge, Need For Speed, CoD etc.

Yeah, they didn't separate yet, so I put some liquid plastic on and it appears to be holding for now. I'll probably reinforce with some tape just to be doubly safe.
Yeah, other wise I LOVE them. Comfortable, good sound, and work with all my devices. I had a lot of issues with Windows and volume on the original PlayStation headset...

They're really good! Actually, even powered off, they make excellent headphones for music.
My game testing with them was waylaid somewhat by my aquisition of Daft Punk's new record (which is pretty amazing). I listened to that with them cabled, powered off connected to my Note 2 using Power Amp (easily the best music player app). Great, great sound!

Yeah. If I had any complaints it's that the different modes are fairly useless imo. I've not loaded up the PS3 App for it lately to see if there are any new ones... but I keep mine on GAME 24/7. I usually have the bass impact arounnnddd 35% while listening to music and a bit higher for games.

Game and Movie seem to be the most useful modes as far as Bassimpact goes. Music is pretty useless-they're better powered off for that anyway. I read somewhere that there's a custom profile for Bioshock Infinite built with the developers that's pretty impressive. The author of the article said he didn't know about it prior to testing- and that the Game setting was really very good- but the custom profile was incredible, and better than using his expensive surround set up.

I actually forgot all about that. I'll have to try it as my 7.1 system is currently taken apart (lame GF wanted to move around my living room ). I've only played like an hour of that game since it's release anyways...

Went and traded in my Vita yesterday, and got the pulse wireless headset for my PC. Only wireless headset GameStop had that I knew would work with my picky as hell laptop. Really sounds great, and the mic quality is quite nice as well and comfy on top of that. I really wanted to get the Astros that I use to own, but my new computer doesn't work well with them.
