Topic: What Are You Favorite Indie Games?

I have been playing a lot of indie games over the past few years, and the ones I liked the most are Shovel Knight and Hollow Knight, they have pretty different atmosphere and are very good games on their own. I like both the more family friendly style of Shovel Knight and the mystical vibes of Hollow Knight.

I also liked a Brazilian game called Dogurai very much. It's very simple, the game looks and plays like a Game Boy Megaman game, but it's still very good! It's so niche they launched it last week and there isn't even a Wikipedia page yet.

And there are the multiplayer indie games too, I always make 2 lists of games - single player favorites and multiplayer favorites - whenever I make a "top 5", "top 10" or anything like that. In that sense, I like Don't Starve Together, it feels so intense the "trying to survive" mechanic when you play it with your friends; I also like Ultimate Chiken Horse, those "Happy" or "Troll" games are good to make you feel better, and this game specifically somewhat makes me remember the days when I played the Rayman minigames with my friends.

Although I’ve struggled with defining what constitutes an ‘indie’, my current obsession has been playing Dead Cells. It’s definitely up there as far as indies.
Of course, the two Playdead studio games Inside and Limbo are fantastic as well.
Another favorite is Night School Studio’s Oxenfree. Really good work there for a small independent studio.
And lastly, this is where it gets fuzzy - Giant Sparrow’s two games The Unfinished Swan and What Remains of Edith Finch are among my very favorite indie games, if they can be called ‘indies.’ The Unfinished Swan would seem to qualify since it was initially presented at the Independent Games Festival, but after Giant Sparrow got assistance from Sony Santa Monica for a time (before they dropped them) to help promote Edith Finch, I’m not sure that game truly qualifies. But I love it anyways.

Funnily enough, my favourite indie games also just happent to be the best indie games, and while others might disagree, they are factually wrong.

They are...

Fez
Hyper Light Drifter
Axiom Verge
Towerfall
Braid

Celeste is probably my favourite indie and also one of the best games I’ve ever played. Fez, Binding of Isaac and Cuphead are also fantastic.

I love a good indie game, often enjoy them a lot more than most triple A games.
Some of my absolute favourites are..

Pyre - great characters, great soundtrack, so many ways to play this brilliantly fun game. Really enjoyable story as well, I was sad when it was over.

Transistor - Amazing soundtrack, unique game play, traversing a weird post apocalypse city. Beautiful.

Furi - Pure badass boss battles with awesome synthwave soundtrack.

Spelunky - Every playthrough is a little bit different. So easy to die instantly and be forced to start again but the urge to keep coming back to discover new secrets is too much to resist.

Resogun - One of Housemarque's best, masterful arcade experience with lots of cool dlc that mixes the game up in cool new ways.

Super Time Force Ultra - Plenty of indies that don't take themselves seriously with some good humour but STFU does it with style. And the puzzle style time travel combat that you can come at in so many different ways is just oodles of fun.

PixelJunk Shooter Ultimate - Surely the best PixelJunk game? Just a joy flying around saving those poor lost astronauts and taking on those fun bosses.

Broken Age - Pretty sure this is an indie. Probably the most funny point and click game ever. And as I recall you don't get stuck every five minutes on some almost impossible puzzle. Double win right there, fun story too.

Yeah, definitely smaller teams and smaller budgets. Towerfall is brilliant with 4 people, the dlc is superb too so I totally agree with that. Add that to my list as well.

I enjoyed Axiom Verge quite a bit, super impressive for a one person team and bonus points for being on the Vita.

Purchased Hyper Light Drifter, not started it yet but looking forward to it..
Braid.. cant say I loved it personally, just wasn't for me.

@crimsontadpoles I totally forgot about that! I played it back when it first launched on my old Mac and it stayed with me. I never could go back and play the genocide route after getting the true good ending, it would mess me up!

Don't play too many indies, but I do enjoy games from "A" level studios from time to time, which are usually thrown in with true indies.

Mostly stuff from Inti Creates (Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon, Blaster Master 0, Mighty Gunvolt Burst), & WayForward (Shantae & the Pirate's Curse, Shantae: Half-Genie Hero, Mighty Switch Force).

Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)

Towerfall would be my number one. Brilliant game that's so simple but offers unlimited replay value. It may be in my top 5 on the ps4 in terms of actual play time. Resogun, Overcooked, Horizon Chase Turbo, & Cadence if Hyrule would round out my top 5.
