What's Horizon Forbidden West like on PlayStation 4? We've no doubt that those of you still rocking a PS4 are curious how the last-gen version of Guerrilla Games' new title holds up. How does it look on PS4? What are the load times like? Is the framerate okay?
Don't worry — as part of our Horizon Forbidden West guide, we're here to answer all those questions. Oh, and fear not; screenshots on this page are all taken from early on in the game, so no spoilers here. If you're looking for impressions on the PS5 version, we have a full Horizon Forbidden West PS5 review that goes into more detail on the game itself. Anyway, let's get on with it.
We've spent a few hours with the PS4 version of Forbidden West on a launch day console, and we've come away from it pretty darn impressed. After getting accustomed the PS5 release, we were a little worried that reverting back to the PS4 version would be a little jarring. However, having now put some time in with the previous-gen experience, we can say with confidence that PS4 owners aren't being shortchanged.
It looks magnificent. We're no Digital Foundry, but we do know this version of the game runs at a locked 30 frames-per-second with a dynamic 1080p resolution. If you're using a PS4 Pro, the resolution is bumped up to a checkerboarded 1800p, still running at a capped 30fps. This is definitely a step down from what the PS5 version offers, but the end result is seriously impressive. Though the open world isn't quite so densely packed with details like foliage, it's a fantastic-looking game on either console, and we haven't noticed any performance issues at all on the PS4. Save for a little bit of pop-in here and there, it's rock solid.
The PS4 version looks great and performs well, then. How does it do in other areas? Well, a big point of difference between the PS4 and PS5 releases is the loading times. On PS5, these will only last a few seconds, maybe 10 seconds max. On PS4, however, loading takes significantly longer; after selecting Continue from the main menu, the game took just over a minute to load in. It's hardly a deal breaker, and the inflated load times are to be expected, but it is a luxury we miss whenever we're not using the PS5.
The PS5 has also spoiled other controllers for us, to be honest. While the DualShock 4 serves its purpose perfectly well, playing Forbidden West on the PS4 really emphasises how much the haptic feedback and adaptive triggers of the DualSense brings to the play experience. Obviously if you've yet to use a DualSense controller and sample what it has to offer, you won't feel you're missing out. Again, the PS4's DualShock 4 does its job handily, but you'll know what we mean whenever you upgrade to PS5. It really does add a lot, even if it's subtle stuff you don't notice until it's missing.
Aside from all of that, this is an identical game to the PS5 version, with the same huge map to explore, a long list of quests to complete, and some truly amazing story revelations to discover. The good news is that you're in for a great ride, regardless of what platform you use. The PS4 release might lack some of the things that PS5 brings to the table, but ultimately, it's a perfectly good alternative. What's more, you can upgrade to the new-gen version for free, and your save data carries over, meaning you can easily continue your journey on PS5 when the time comes.

Yep I’ll be playing the PS4 version on my Pro! I have an SSD though, so it’ll be interesting to see how much that improves the load times.
Mainly for @Ralizah’s sake but does this version have gyro aiming or is that exclusive to the DualSense?
Guerrilla are absolute wizards. The fact this open world looks so good on PS4 is really impressive when you consider how gorgeous it is on PS5.
I appreciated this write-up on the PS4 version. Hopefully you guys can do a similar companion article on GT7 for PS4 when that game launches.
These screenshots are mind blowing.

Being someone who plays between a PS5, Switch, and Series X, DualSense isn't missed, noticed, or honestly a big deal breaker when moving back over to a "regular" controller - maybe it's just me. Certainly not an excuse for a $10 upgrade fee that Sony wants to charge on other cross-gen games.
Glad to know the PS4 version still holds its own - though I am not entirely surprised given that this is from a first-party developer.
Digital Foundry said the PS4 versions are basically low settings whereas the PS5 is everything on ultra, but that it still improves on HZD. And also of course at a lower res and potentially half the framerate. The load times are meant to average 8 seconds on PS5 and ~53 seconds on PS4. It sounds like it's basically a step forward from HZD running on a PS4 but the PS5 is just orders of magnitude more powerful than the PS4 which was underpowered even in 2013.
@nessisonett @Ralizah Can confirm the PS4 version does have gyro aiming!
@GamingFan4Lyf I'm the opposite personally. I choose PS for multi plats (unless its GP of course) because the controller feels so much better. I still think the Series X controller feels like cheap clicky plastic and its the only thing that disappoints with the MS package (oh and the fact I need to change batteries every few weeks).
I don't really play on PS4 anymore but find these articles interesting. If I was told the current difference between games would be frame rate (30 vs 60), resolution and load times only would I have still got a PS5?
I'd have probably said no a year ago, but after experiencing those differences it would be a yes now. Just can't go back anymore.
@nessisonett @ralizah gyro aiming is included in ps4 and 5 versions
@Quintumply Thanks for not forgetting about us! Those visuals look insane.
@Bentleyma Still say anyone with a Pro that isn't rocking an SSD is missing a trick.
I haven't got Forbidden West yet but pressing Continue on Zero Dawn's main screen, you're back in the action in about 15 seconds.
No I'll be playing on PS5 but good to hear PS4 Players won't be getting an inferior experience.
Before I got a PS5 I thought haptic feedback was going to be a bit of a gimmick (and would become annoying after a while). But it’s brilliant and adds so much to the experience. It’s the feature I most look forward to games having this gen.
Edit: And adaptive triggers.
@GamingFan4Lyf I feel you, I don't feel like the DualSense adds that much. It can be cool, like for example in Demon's Souls and Astrobot, I liked the way it was implemented and it was a fun little gimmick. But in most games for me, like Re8, where I turned it off completely cause it didn't feel right to me or in Ratchet and Clank where it felt too much and it even caused stickdrift to one of my controllers cause of the constant trigger pressure and heavy rumbling. I went to my settings and put DualSense sensitivity on medium cause I feel it puts too much strain on the controller.
I am expecting Guerilla to make 'sensible' cuts to their game so that in the vast majority of scenes, the overall visual impression is very similar - like Forza Horizon 5 where in side by side shots in motion, it looks remarkably similar, but when you see screen shots, the difference is very much 'generational'...
Its going to be the 'comparison' shots for Horizon: Forbidden West that will show the amount of objects/detail etc that is 'culled'. We already know that certain aspects won't be available on PS4 - like the small vegetation reacting to movement. I'm sure that those on PS4/Pro will be suitably impressed as it will look amazing (compared to other PS4/Pro games)
And to think people doubted GG could pull it off, or the PS4 will hold it back. If anything it looks like the game was downscaled to PS4 rather the other way around.
If you only have a PS4 and a 1080p tv doesn't sound like you'll be missing too much then. Don't think this game is twitchy enough were 30 vs 60 is going to get you killed. Going to assume most people w/ a PS5 have a 4k tv otherwise that $500 was probably not money well spent.
Here's a poll question for ya PS,
What's your gaming setup?
PS4 - 1080p tv
PS4 - 4k tv
PS5 - 1080p tv
PS5 - 4k tv
Apologies to that 1 guy out there w/ the 8k tv. 😁
Yo, as someone who still plays on a launch day PS4, this really warms my heart. Not that I was too worried, I had faith in Guerrilla Games! But I really appreciate this piece.
And I have to agree with Sammy, these screenshots look gorgeous.
@rjejr number 4. Always choose performance mode tho.
If I can score a PS5 this year I'll play it on that, otherwise I'll probably get it on PS4 in a few months. Will be too busy playing Elden Ring for it.
@Quintumply @nessisonett Thanks, folks! I think that makes my decision an easy one. Clearly they went out of their way to make this as good an experience on PS4 as possible.
@StonyKL Rechargeable battery packs for Xbox controllers usually run about $10. It's easier and much cheaper in the long run.
I`m so glad to read the PS4 version holds up. I just received my copy in the mail and can`t wait to start playing. Sometimes I wish I didn`t had a job.....
Great to know as I'm still on a PS4 launch unit. Lol. Dont you have to pay the extra $20 for the 5 upgrade though??
I sold my ps4 lol.all on ps5 + 4k tv. 8k tv is in the list to get. Mebe for the ps6 lol. As best ps5 will do is upscale the 8k
Zero Dawn played brilliantly on PS4 and it plays even better on PS5 so I fully expect the same with Forbidden West. Question has anyone took the advice of critics such as pushsquare and got the £59.99 PS4 version with the free PS5 upgrade? If so, same as me and no option to do it yet? Apparently it’s released tomorrow so another download to come at midnight. Dammit!
@Bentleyma I might be doing the same. I’m planning on playing through Forbidden West when it’s cheaper sometime in the Spring/Summer and I’ve gotten through my current list of games to play. I don’t think I’ll have a PS5 by then so I might be snagging the PS4 version for my Pro given it doesn’t come to PC by the time I want to play it.
This and my oled c1 ps5 version will just look bloody amazing can not wait . I'm sure the ps4 version will look great too
@invictus4000 No, it's a free upgrade path. Buy the PS4 version and you're entitled to the digital PS5 version at no extra cost.
@rjejr I have a standard, launch year PS4 and a 4K TV.
However, I've had issues with nearly every new game that I've bought over the past three years with performance issues. Shadows and lighting are the biggest culprits. In some cases, its just awful compared to older PS4 games. And increasingly, I'm experiencing jaggy graphics and pop ins like its the PS2 era.
I'm holding out for the PS5 for any game that I really care about. Hopefully PS4 Pro owners have a better experience, but I think that people are understating issues on standard PS4 models with a lot of games.
Look spectacular, need to work late tonight and early tomorrow then i'm taking the rest of the day off as soon as it arrives! Sorry friends and family I cleared the diary this weekend.
you've written this as basically an ad for the PS5
I’m glad all my PS4 peeps are getting a great version of the game.
I’m so ready for tomorrow to get here so I can go pick up my Steelbook PS5 version from the local GameStop.
Weirdly enough, I’m the only person at that GameStop who preordered a PS5 version. I looked at the preorder list while I was there. 99% of the orders are for the base PS4 version. I’m the only person who ordered the special edition for PS5.
I figure that’s because of the free upgrade and they don’t have bandwidth limitations. I get 350 gigs per month, and as small as the day one patch is, it sounds like the entire game is on the disc. Works for me; I get a cool case and I save a 90 gig download.
Feel like saying "I told you so", would be beating a dead flying mount at this point.
I'd like to be able to use the dualsense features ( wish the controller worked on PS4 then I'd buy one) but apart from that I'm not fussed about the rest I know I'll enjoy this game on my PS4 pro just as much as I did with zero dawn
@Would_you_kindly
I’m a bit perplexed as to why Sony didn’t update the PS4 to at least recognize the Dualsense as a Dualshock 4.
When they updated the PS3 to support Dualshock 4s I threw a party. I was down to my last Dualshock 3 at the time; I was still playing a lot of PS3 titles at that time. After that update I used my Dualshock 4 90% of the time. I only used the DS3 to turn the system on and off. I remember vividly that the DS4 couldn’t power the system on wirelessly.
@TheRedComet According to Tech/Radar the duelsense works on the PS3 oddly
@rjejr No. 1.
We have a 4KTV, but it's meant for the family. Outside of the occasional party game like Mario Party or perennial favorite like Toejam and Earl, it doesn't really get used for gaming.
So refreshing in this day and age of broken game releases that this one bucks that trend. Well done Guerilla
@BritneyfR_ee
Haptic is cool for immersion but oftentimes it can feel like it gets in the way of gameplay especially in shooters. I was playing Deathloop with haptics and adaptive triggers for a while but eventually I disabled both and the shooting felt just so much more responsive as a result. I almost feel it will be remembered as a nothing more than a gimmick in 10 years.
@rjejr PS5 4KTV
Upgraded my PC when we bought the 4KTV for the family room. Sony releasing a PS5 was the last piece of the puzzle (Can’t swap parts on a PS4 😜)
Movies, gaming, work… Done with 1080p in general.
@rjejr Option 1 still, I'm afraid. However, thanks to the Pro's super-sampling, all looks great and non-jaggy on it.
Plus the internal SSD reduces load time to about 2x the time that the PS5 takes.
The first game made my ps4 pro to sound like an airplane, will this game make that sound too?
I'll be getting it on PS4 anyway cause I can't find a damn PS5. I still haven't seen one in stores. I'm not even sure they exist.
I'll i need to know is how woke is this game?
@phillyjeff
What's up with that woke word lately? Everything is woke now. Oh and what the bloody hell is a Mary Sue? I'm so sick of everyone and their mother saying any strong female character is woke or a Mary Sue.
Was Ellen Ripley woke? Was Sara Conner woke? How bout wonder woman is she woke too?
Our ps4s are going to sound like jet engines running this
Playing it now. It looks great! Big improvement to HZD. You get some pop ups, but nothing bad. Hyped!!
@Deadhunter Im a bigger fan of the PS solution batteries or batterypacks i find it annoying.
@phillyjeff Not as woke as people like you who cant handle a female lead.
