That's something developer Bioware hopes to change with upcoming sequel, Mass Effect 3, as it aims to deepen the lead character's story arc in order to emphasise the hero's emotional turmoil during the war against the Reapers.
One of the things we wanted to do in Mass Effect 3 was deepen Shepard as a character, so you really get to express what your Shepard is feeling and going through, throughout the war, said lead writer Mac Walters in an episode of Bioware Pulse.
We wanted to take that next step with the story telling. Yeah, its a war, yeah its got giant robots we get to shoot in the face, but there is a human side to the story. You are role-playing, and you are role-playing as a human. Why shouldnt that human have an emotional component throughout the game?
Walters continued that the third outing in the Mass Effect series is set to be bigger than any of its predecessors, and that's reflected by the depth of content contributed by the game's writers.
The emotion, and depth of writing that we have in there, has also gone up another level, he explained. When a video game can make you feel something but also be fun and entertaining, then I think weve done our jobs.
Mass Effect 3's due out in March on PlayStation 3.
