Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll know all about Kickstarter. The crowd funding website has already, ahem, kickstarted the development of a couple of high profile games, and now localisation specialists MonkeyPaw Games and GaijinWorks are hoping to get in on the lucrative action.
The companies want to bring obscure PSP dungeon crawler Class of Heroes II to the West, but they need your help to do so. While a digital release is already planned, the duo intends to raise a cool $500,000 in order to produce an enormous physical edition packed with more gubbins than you could possibly ever store.
If funded, the Deluxe Edition promises to include a custom box, a soundtrack, and other secret items that are still being prototyped. Bet you’re gagging to spend your money based on that description, huh?
To be fair, depending on the amount of money you pledge, the companies are also promising such sought after accessories as pocket watches and music boxes. Oh, and a trip to E3.

I like this kind of stuff that's pretty cool. Unfortunately it's just not my cup of tea. I hope they do this to localize games I'm interested in, but first person RPG dungeon crawling is definitely not for me. I tried the Wizardry demo and it turned me off from the genre pretty quick. But with that said I hope it works for them because apparently that would lead to more Kickstarter campaigns.
I want to participate in this, but I'm not sure if I want this game at all. It's too bad it's not Valkyria Chronicles III instead.
Kickstarting a physical release of a PSP game when a digital release is already on the way? Who in their right mind would pay into such a hair-brained scheme at this point? IF I wanted the game at all (which I don't...I much prefer Etrian Odyssey), I'd just download it and play it on my Vita. I have absolutely no intention to ever buy another UMD, and I know there are a LOT of people who are with me on that one.
That said, having read more of the kickstarter page, it appears they're also using the money to improve the original programming and make it a better game overall. I'm all for that, I guess. But I still think making a new UMD in 2012 is silly at best.
@Stuff: I think the most important part of this campaign is here:
Gaijinworks has been working closely with MonkeyPaw Games, laying the groundwork for licenses, expanding relationships with Japanese publishers, and setting up a structure that will allow us to test Kickstarter as a method to, well, kick start the US J-RPG market. Here is the chance to help grow the segment and prove that there is a market for great J-RPG games, regardless of the platform.
I think that's a pretty noble cause considering how many of these games never make the jump. I just feel like this is the wrong game to do it with. :/
I love love loved Class Of Heroes 1, so I'm very excited about this project, and have already added my support.
I also hope people understand this is mainly testing the waters to see how popular RPGs really are. If you want Valkyria Chronicles III translated, or any other RPG, here's your big chance to say "Yes, we want these games. Take my money."
@Kimiko: Sorry, but I'm not going to try to say "I love JRPG's!" by supporting a specific title of that genre which I do NOT care for. I've been showing my love of the genre by buying the games I do want for years...if that's not enough, there's nothing I can do about that.
