Sony decided against making its next home console digital only, the Wall Street Journal reports.
The publication claims that the company had considered removing the optical drive from the PlayStation 4 – rumoured to be codenamed Orbis – but decided against the move due to poor Internet speeds.
The report echoes comments made by new Sony gaffer Kaz Hirai, who said that a complete switch to digital for its console business is still some way off.
Meanwhile, rumours suggest that Sony is on the verge of buying out a major cloud gaming service – with the deal set to be announced during E3.
The Wall Street Journal concludes that the next PlayStation console is set to release in 2013, which lines up with other rumours we’ve heard.
It's going to be an exciting 12 months.

Good good!
Yeah, digital only, b/c it worked SO WELL for the PSPgo that the follow-up Vita system did away with the idea. I'm thinking that option was considered as seriously as giving the system away for free. And can the PS4 REALLY release in 2013 w/o a big reveal at this E3? Wasn't the PS3 delayed about a year after it's originally scheduled launch date? I think the PS2 might have been delayed as well, though maybe it was just hyped up super early to kill the Dreamcast? I just can't imagine a system launch w/o at least a 1 year hype machine campaign.
Oh, and why kill an optical drive on the PS4 when the PS3 blu-ray drive won them the war over HD? I know blu-ray players are cheap now but a PS4 without a DVD/blu-ray player seems a step in the wrong direction as well.
thanks god! i love keep physical copies esp limited edition ones
They all need to understand that most ISP's are capping our monthly data at 250 gigs as well. Until we all have unlimited data usage, this will never work.
So it's a rumor that another rumor was wrong?
