Tough guy

Sony’s released the third video in its PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale strategy series. This time the short focuses on popular PlayStation hero: PaRappa the Rapper.

In the accompanying blog post, combat designer Ray Shen explains that he spent a lot of time researching the character in order to capture his unique feel. “Besides thoroughly replaying PaRappa’s games, I also checked out his soundtrack, anime, merchandise and advertisements to get a full sense of his appeal,” he says.

PaRappa excels in close combat, where he uses his kung-fu skills, skateboard and love of music to launch devastating attacks on the other characters. The dancing dog is also one of the few fighters able to generate AP without attacking, courtesy of his Boxy Boy stereo. Unfortunately, the AP can be collected by any of the other players, so you’ll need to protect the boombox if you decide to place one on the battlefield.

Despite having some unique moves, Shen believes that PaRappa is an accessible character. You can check out the singing superstar in action courtesy of the trailer below.
