Sony pulled no punches during its hotly anticipated PlayStation Meeting earlier this evening, sprinting out of the gate and announcing that the PlayStation 4 is coming this holiday. The system – which has been the source of much speculation for months now – has been in development for five years, and adopts a developer-driven design. It sounds like the platform holder has really learned from its errors with the PlayStation 3.
As rumoured, the console will boast a PC-like architecture and will be particularly simple for studios to get to grips with. It will boast an enormous 8GB DDR5 RAM and almost two teraflops of power. All you need to know is that games will look absolutely exquisite on the system, as evidenced by some of the titles on show.
The system will ship with a new DualShock controller, which features improved triggers, reduced latency, and the much speculated touchpad. It also boasts a PlayStation Move-like sensor bar on the top, which partners with a new camera.
Even better, the console will function like a social network, allowing you to keep track of your friends through the vaunted ‘Share’ button. You’ll be able to broadcast gameplay through the power of the cloud, as well as play games while they’re downloading. Even better, enhanced Remote Play will allow you to stream any titles directly to the PlayStation Vita and play them if your television is otherwise occupied.
The console is due out this holiday, though the platform holder failed to mention territories or price. No final hardware unit was shown during the presentation; presumably that will follow at E3. While we wait for more information, let us know your thoughts about Sony's press conference and the PS4 in the comments section and poll below.

HYPE!
HYPE HYPE HYPE! I thought the event was very impressive overall. Cannot wait for E3.
I'll wait for awhile. Honestly, I thought the event was pretty dissapointing. The system seems really cool, and I'm psyched for infmaous, but thats it really.
Killzone, man! Killzone blew my mind.
@get2sammyb All that colour...
Day one for sure as long as either Killzone: Shadow Fall or inFamous: Second Son is there. I'd prefer inFamous but both look awesome. I thought Sony did a pretty good job, don't really know how anybody could be disappointed.
I dont know I want to wait and see the game line up and what MS has to offer. I only have enough room/money for one other system so it all depends what MS has to offer and which one of the two I will go with this generation.
I went with a PS2 two generations ago over Xbox, but this last gen I went with the 360 over the PS3 let see who will connivance me the most this gen.
I did not really get all this social stuff. Seem prety useless to me. I wanted remote play with Vita but it was not made clear, they said aiming for it though... As for the games a final fantasy at launch would convince me to buy the console but square sort of trolled us by announcing the development of a ff title with no real info. I bet that we will see it in 2020 or something. Since I don' t play shooters I had little more too see.
Am I the only one that when I say witness I though of Myst,an old adventure game for ps1?
Anyway I will see more game announcements, the price and the details about remote play and I will decide later.
Nope. Sony messed up with the PS3 to me, so I'm not interested
@get2sammyb Killzone: Shadow Fall and InFamous: Second Son are going to guarantee that I have a PS4. My heart is beating at an inhuman speed right now, my hype meter is beyond it's maximum capacity.
Wii U is dead when the PS4 drops! LONG LIVE SONY AND PS4!!
@Belmont
Exactly. I thought they were very unclear about remote play too. They said they are unlocking remote play, and that the ps4 can remote play games to the Vita. But I don't think he said every ps4 game will remote play to the Vita. And he sure as heck didn't say all of your digital ps3 games will remote play to the Vita. That would be the real selling point for me at launch.
If they botch remote play again and selectively choose what will and won't remote play and pretend to roll out ps3 games for remote play but stop after the first bunch and stop talking about it — then I'll be very comfortable waiting a year or 2 to upgrade to ps4. I'm not going to preorder, I'm just going to wait and see after launch if they held their promises.
And The Witness was definitely Myst.
@Black-kyurem: ANd PS4 is dead when the 720 drops!
I have to wonder what it needs 8gb of ram for? All i know is that this will be expensive.
@Eternal-Cyprees It would need a moderate amount of RAM in order to download games as you play them, or even stream games live. 8GB isn't massive but it should be more than enough.
I also need to know what they're going to do with Playstation Plus. My subscription goes well into 2015 I think so if they start giving away PS4 games I can't even play that'd be a pretty good reason to upgrade as well.
There's nothing to be hyped for right now. inFAMOUS and Watch Dogs looked cool, but that was about it. Ill definitely get one, but not at launch.
I don't understand what the Killzone hype is about. Doesn't look like anything the PS3 can't handle. Beneath the pretty visuals and all the explosions, it'll probably be just another FPS game with nothing to set it apart from the other titles in the genre.
And where were the Vita games? Do they even care about that thing?
Kinda a let down. No real Vita stuff. And PS4 looks good, just has almost no games that looked good.
This was still more info than e3 had, or probably will have.
InFamous is the only game that really interests me right now. Not worth getting it day 1, but damn the PS4 is going to be BEAST!
New Killzone and Infamous are both really impressive (although my streaming quality made them look like utter crap), the cherry on the cake would be Watch Dogs or that new Capcom IP for some really strong starting titles. I have to say I don't fancy car games, they kind of bore me fast, but I'm still looking forward to this AutoClub thing.
Yes, as far as I've seen from tonight, there is pretty of material for a strong launch, of course it will be hard at start to be better than an already good PS3, for titles aspect (given that I do not have a PS3 atm).
I'll buy one, for sure. They showed more games than I was expecting this early on, and there will definitely be more revealed throughout the year.
@Tasuki
And all could be dead if the Steambox comes to fruition.
Were there actually any pictures of the console/was there a console in attendance? I haven't seen it yet.
Backwards compatibility?
I don't really care about the PS4 at this point.The meeting went pretty much exactly how I expected things to go.
I like the new Controller and camera set up. The only Social feature I like is the easy streaming/viewing of gameplay video.
The only games I'm interested in are Knack, whatever that thing that MM showed off was and The Witness (but I will probably be able to get that on PC) and none of those are system sellers for me.
I'm definitely getting a ps4 but not at launch.
Dude, 8gb DDR5 AND remote play????
Y'all are haters!
I'm just not ready, personally. That said, I'm sure that the new system will be impressive.
Was there any mention made of if online gaming/streaming services like Netflix will be free? That could definitely be a dealbreaker for me if the new system goes the way of Xbox Live with annual fees (a load of BS in my humble opinion). I don't want to pay Sony to watch Netflix on my gaming system when I'm already paying Netflix, Plus totally pwns Xbox Live. I guess I'll wait and see...
killzone and infamous...i need two ps4 man...
I hate that Jack Tretton just wrote on the PSblog:
“it’s our long-term vision to make most PS4 games playable on PS Vita”
their vision isn't all ps4 games, and it's a "long-term" vision at that.
I'm still thinking about which console to choose for this gen. I know what the PS4 and the Wii U has to offer but I am going to wait to see what the 720 has in store first.
No love for Blizzard
Not showing the console was a good idea, now they have something to promote for E3.
If the console is $400 it will require PS+ or Gold or something, too much nonstop bandwidth.
Yes, Witness is 3D Myst.
Dat killzone, and even Knack looked interesting. Give me a price no more than $400 and we have a deal.
nothing I saw would make me an early adopter of the PS4. The only game that looked interesting was The Witness. Killzone was so boring I lost interest in watching it. The rest of the game reveals were boring sequels or multi platform games. If a PS4 game is also available on the PS3 and/or other systems what is my incentive for buying a PS4? Watch_Dogs is out on PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U and PC. I did like the look of it. However, why would I need to buy new hardware to play the game if there is only cosmetic differences?
@Irkin004
I'm almost positive it'd be around $450... I mean, all that tech is gunna sell at a loss anyways, right?
As for me, I really liked that Media Molecule sculpture thing, that really got me excited!
Why didn't they show the actual machine!!!!!!!!!
Pretty good showing by Sony!
The features for the PS4 sound interesting (particularly the Vita-streaming), the controller looks great, and they provided a nice mix of new IP and established franchises.
Unfortunately, I won't be getting one at launch (I only allow myself to buy Nintendo products at launch), but I'll definitely be picking one up in the future.
@Ginko - The final design may not be ready yet...or they want to save it for E3.
Well...
Many of you will have read me state that I'm probably not investing in another console other than another Vita. Well, Sony just sold me a PS4, very dependant on price and functionality at launch mind you, but yeah, I'm in.
If you for some reason still perfer xbox 360 over PS3, Sony is making really hard for you to nit pick reasons not to like the PS4
There's not a whole lot more I could have asked for in a console. The GUI looked a bit iffy, but it's something I'd have to use before I can really judge. I love the social aspect of the hardware and I loved the games they showed. It's looking like a one man race to me.
yeah i'll be getting it but not at launch i never do get a new console right away i always give it about half a year before i get them
@nathanuc1988
Pretty much my thoughts. Nintendo has still done nothing to get me interested in Wii U and while I'll give MS a chance to impress me I fully expect the next Xbox to be a Halo tv player and nothing more. For what it was Sony had a good showing and E3 will likely be even better.
Good show, I'm pretty exited about it. But where's the last guardian?
For me the only good thing about the share "feature" is that, finally, we'll be able to take snapshots of the games.
Holiday is christmas??
@coroum
It'll come out in November.
I'd love to get one day one. I'm going to shoot for it, but I still have the Vita to get, so we'll see >_>
I think i will do what i did last generation, buy all the systems,get all the benefits from each, and then laugh at everyone bickering on what console is better than the other
cause in all honesty, all the game systems this generation will be a blast to play, and im not missing out on any of it.
