It seems that Sony’s going for a pinball theme in the penultimate PlayStation Store update before Christmas. Not content with confirming that Zen Pinball 2 will be flipping onto the next generation system on 17th December in North America and 18th December in Europe, the platform holder’s also revealed that The Pinball Arcade will be targeting a high-score on the exact same days.
Unlike its slightly more fantastical friend, Farsight Studios’ re-release will not be cross-buy compatible. If you’ve already splashed out on the title’s Season One bundle, though, you’ll be able to grab it again at a discounted sum for your shiny new system. There’s no word on specific prices just yet, but we’re sure that all will be revealed in the run up to release.
In addition to the most realistic physics on the market, the PS4 port of the popular pinball platform will ship with several visual improvements, including “per pixel ray casting, area lights [and] shadows, point lights, and screen space ambient occlusion”. In short, it will look almost as good as the real thing. Are you excited for next week’s steel ball showdown? Launch your thoughts in the comments section below.

According to Farsight the Pinball Arcade will also be released on a physical disc as well. https://www.facebook.com/pinballarcade ("The retail PS4 version of pinball arcade is available online now at Amazon http://tinyurl.com/jvzqacx and will soon be on shelves at Gamestop, Toys 'R' Us and other retailers in North America!")
No cross buy, no buy. (Well, no buy anyway as I got the title via PS plus).
I know it plays a more realistic game of pinball, but I have to say I much prefer Zen Pinball's nutty impossible-in-real-life tables. Fantastic Four remains my favourite, and soon I'll get to play it with a Dual Shock 4 at no extra cost. It's the game that keeps giving.
@RawShark That's fair. I quite like both approaches, personally, as it gives each game a bit of variety. It's a bit of a shame that Pinball Arcade's not full cross-buy, though, I agree.
I do enjoy the occasional bit of pinball. Though I was always rubbish on real tables.
Played both demos (Arcade and Zen) on the Vita and couldn't decide which one I preferred, so I didn't get either of them.
Cross-buy on Zen may swing that one in my favour..or I might still sit on the fence for a while depending on price. Interested to see what they do with PS4 visuals.
I think the reasoning for the lack of crossbuy for Pinball Arcade is because of all the upgrades the ps4 version has now over the ps3 and vita versions. They do give you a discount if you already own it on ps3 though, so at least that's something.
