There have long been rumours swirling around that Sony has some sort of Japanese role-playing game in development. The whispers first began months ago, and they keep popping up from time to time. Of course, it goes without saying that an exclusive JRPG would certainly be something to get excited about, so we can see why these rumours persist.
However, Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida has effectively pooped on the party, simply answering "no" when asked if the Japanese company has such a title in development. We'd obviously love to pad this story out a little more, but that's sadly all we have to work with.
Having said that, if Sony does have a JRPG in production, then Shu wouldn't be giving the game away by saying yes, would he? We're probably reading far too much into it, but that cheeky half-smile at the end of this Twitter video is enough to keep us hoping.

They don't need when the likes of Square Enix and KOEI Tecmo are making plenty already for PS4, plus level 5 have yet to announce there PS4 exclusive.
I think he meant no as in there isn't a "JRPG" in production, not necessarily an RPG in general. A first party studio at this point is probably working on things with more of a global appeal, and wrpgs have seen success as of late in japan. At least I hope that's what it means lol.
Why would he give it away that there was one in the works? It's nice having surprise reveals, and it should stay secret until it's ready to be revealed.
I'd settle for a few more RPGs don't have to be, J. Also, I really am curious to what level 5 is working on. They confirmed they were doing something early this year but in that time span they're working on a bunch of Nintendo games.

And it probably isn't even considered "lying" denying there is one in the works, because the term J-RPG, or western RPG for that matters, isn't something a guy like Shu would use. He would always argue fhat such a title which we call J-RPG, is simply an RPG meant for everyone to play and which was made wit lots of cultural influences.
If I were a betting man I would say there is a RPG in development where we don't know off, maybe in the early stages. Studio Japan had a small team splitting of to focus on RPGs, mainly co developing them, but maybe they decided to take a swing at it themselves. It could be a Bravely Default kinda title which you don't expect on a home console and isn't sold for a full retail price. Although there are some great Japanese made RPGs in development I don't think Sony has already thrown the towel in the ring all together when it comes to the Japanese home console market and I think they'll try an attract a bigger Japanese audience by catering specifically to them with some exclusives.
aww... thos bold "No" is heartbreaking... I wish to see an AAA JRPG from Studi Japan
...please make a sequel to Legend of Dragoon...
Thing is, saying "yes" is as good as announcing it in terms of player expectations and "why has this game been in development for 4 years"-type questions. Of course, sometimes "no" really does mean "no", as Bill Crosby found out.
@Boerewors Well you have to bear in mind, anything that's on both PS4 and Xbone might as well be a Sony exclusive in Japan. KH3, FFXV, the possible eventual Xbone release of FFVIIR... They're all effectively just scoring points for Sony in Japan. It's actually more of a western thing, especially in America, to a lesser degree the UK, that they have to differentiate themselves from Microsoft in that way. Their biggest enemy is themselves; it's not a case of it being on PS4 but not Xbone, it's way more a case of it being on PS4 but not PS3 (or Vita) as far as Japan is concerned.
I'd love a new adventure with Oliver and Mr Drippy.
