Yakuza 5 is still due out on the PlayStation 3 this year, with SEGA attaching a mid-November release window to the oft-requested brawler. The game's currently available to pre-order on Sony's digital plaza, but is tagged with a place holder 31st December launch. "Unfortunately, it's a little later than we would've liked, and a few weird development bugs that popped up in localisation caused the delay," the publisher explained. "Without getting too technical, there were just certain parts that didn't like switching the Japanese text out for English, and we had to actually search through the source code to find a fix, taking more time than we expected."
While it's nice to know that the title's approximately four weeks away, we are worried that it's going to get short shrift in a month that will also play host to Call of Duty: Black Ops III, Fallout 4, and Star Wars Battlefront. Here's hoping that fans will pick it up anyway, because if there's any hope of Yakuza Zero getting localised, then this is going to need to shift a few thousand copies at the very least. The pressure's on.

Typical Sega: release an excellent Japanese game on a console that is near dead in the west, so when it sells poorly, and it will, they can exlaim: "you see, we told you nobody would like Yakuza 5!"
There goes the only hope I had for Yakuza Kiwami and more importantly Yakuza 6 coming westwards.
@Boerewors My understanding is that SEGA wasn't going to release this at all. I'm pretty sure Sony's paid for the localisation, which makes it even more bonkers!
This is going to bomb like nobody's business. Colossal shame but I still hope we get Zero. Somehow.

"shrift"
You wrote something and it's not perfect, feel the anguish.
@sonicmeerkat Are you sure? Short shrift looks correct to me?

@get2sammyb Adding short changes shrift from a religious confession to a dismissal eh, all right you win this time, but I'll be back to point out times when you make a minor error and shatter your ego.
@sonicmeerkat Haha, it probably won't take long!
I'll be picking up this game for sure if that helps. Getting the new Tomb Raider too.
I feel like there's an opportunity here with PS Now. Releasing a PS3 game outside of Japan now AND digital-only seems like a bad idea regardless of what the game is. Would it be that much more expensive to have done an order-based, limited physical print? Like, you pre-order, pre-pay, and they make that many physical copies?
It'd be cool if they put it on PS Now and give you a code for a month free with a digital purchase of the game.
