That didn't take long, did it? After yesterday's reports, Sony has told Wired that PlayStation 2 games are coming to the PlayStation 4 via emulation. However, while the firm confirmed the feature, it stopped short of sharing any specific details. "We have nothing further to comment at this point in time." See you at PlayStation Experience, then?
Rumours regarding PS2 Classics being added to the new-gen system's PlayStation Store have been rife for a while, with PEGI ratings and unnamed sources all saying the same thing. But tech site Digital Foundry got to the bottom of matters earlier this week by studying a trio of Star Wars titles made available as part of the PS4's swish Darth Vader bundle – all of which employ emulation.
The exciting thing is that it seems like the platform holder has not only figured out a way of improving the presentation and performance of the titles, but also managed to incorporate Trophy compatibility. With the feature seemingly already embedded into every PS4, it's just a case of Sony rolling out the games now. We're sure that we'll learn more soon.

If Dark Cloud 2 is one of the games that will be emulated I will cry. That game was my childhood.
@vagineer1 Fingers crossed!
@vagineer1 right there with you
Then again, considering the PEGI ratings for some games (Including Dark Chronicle) in Europe recently. I wouldn't be surprised if DC2 was emulated. I'd still cry though.
This will be PSN most likely, and not linked to emulation of actual physical games.
Which I'm fine with! But I think others may have expectations that are a little clouded.
Now we just need Burnout 2 and 3.
Please please Rogue Galaxy I have always wanted to play it
@sub12 I'm fine with that. Most of my PS2 games are pretty badly scratched. Though most of them still work alongside my PS2, I'd much rather be able to buy them digitall so they will never degrade or get scratched.
Oh my! This is the best piece of news I could ever read about any kind of stuff related to my one and only PS4! I'm serious.
It seems weird to me that they would have figured out how to make the PS4 compatible with PS2 classics, but not PS1. I'm pretty confident they'll announce both at PSX.
Yes! Excellent news! Timesplitters 2 and Future Perfect please, if you could be so kind
War of the monsters please.
Get the Tony Hawk games on there and I'll be a happy man.
@DrClayman Yeah, this will almost certainly include PSone Classics as well. It's just... All of the information we have so far is about the PS2, so we need to wait for more before we can start talking about PSone.
I really hope to have more games than what ps3 had.
My top picks will be :
Final Fantasy XII, unless we do get the HD
Champions of Norath
Baldur's Gate
Demon Stone
No thank you i will only play upgraded versions i will keep my good memories in tact. Well this a pity i was hoping to some PS2 classics remasterd.....
Ps2 : Backward compatible with Ps1 game.
Ps3 : Backward compatible with Ps1 game and eventually Ps2 game via PSN.
Ps4 : Nothing initially and eventually Ps2 game via PSN.
It's nothing new as far as I Know. PS2 classics were already there on PS3. Sure there is trophy and all but in the end, people will have to pay ''again'' for games they already own... To me, it's just trick to make more money. I don't say when it's an HD upgrade like Metal Gear Solid HD or FFX but only a rerelease like this ? Why not put the backward compatibility from the start.
I don't understand why the Tony Hawk's Pro Skaters 1-4 have not been released as PS1 classics already. It makes no since, I was able to rip the discs to play them on my custom firmware PSP and they ran perfectly fine so it must come down to Activision making it happen. Which is why I don't expect any Tony Hawk PS2 games to show up on PSN either. This means we definitely need Disc support!
I think the problem with Tony Hawk is music licensing issues. I bet they can't re-release them without negotiating terms for all of the songs again.
Viewtiful Joe 1 and 2!
I would really love to play Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus. Slightly enhanced visials and trophy support would be excellent additions to an already polished, fun, deep game. So now i think is the time to talk about being able to stream yourself playing Ps2 games, directly from your ps4. I Think the share featute is absolutely going to explode after this holiday season. It has been on the rise since the console launched, but adding classic, nostalgia driven titles to be streamed, along with the holiday blockbusters is going to be a viewers paradise.
I actually have a bunch of ps2 discs still. Couldn't imagine rebuying them with the disc sitting there though.
That's cool. I'd still like to be able to use my original discs but I'm not going to complain about new games to play.
Persona 4 to me!
I have my PS2s and component cables. No need.
Very doubtful that Sony will be implementing code in the emulator to recognise points at which to award trophies for potentially every disc released. So probably PSN only. And probably ridiculously priced.
@soracloud28 I forgot about that 1 my PS2 broke down when i bought it and the one with the girl and the dog nothing more.
@Frank90 Buy a vita tv and you problably get a better looking 1 with more content.
Interesting news, do we know if any of these games might have platinum trophies? Just curious.
I want to play Virtua Fighter 4 (original version) and Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution, The Simpsons Hit and Run, as to start
@Flaming_Kaiser, the game with the girl and dog i think you are referring to is Haunting Ground, it was rated on ESRB I think some years ago
This is great news! Hopefully the digital versions we've already purchased on PS3 can be transferred over.
@LieutenantFatman The Star Wars ones don't.
@get2sammyb pants. Hadn't thought of that. It would likely be a nightmare to do that now.
@GamingPenguin yes. YES.
I say they should incorporate a feature like Xbox did. Any games that are supported you have on disc you can insert it and it'll download it from the store, but you still need the disc to verify to play it. Like Xbox.
Where can I go to request that feature or let them know lol please @get2sammyb
Hell yeah.. Fatal Frame 2, Silent Hill 2, Haunting Ground, GTA SA, Bully, Resi Evil 4... the list keeps going
@Alpha PlayStation Share blog, politely tweet Shuhei and Adam Boyes. Worth mentioning that Sony's not really said much about this yet, so they probably won't answer.
Awsome we can play old overpriced game's. Again.
@get2sammyb of course I'd kindly tweet them lol. I will probably tweet them at a later date, however I doubt they would ever reply anyway to me lol.
But the PlayStation Share Blog? Never heard of it. Thank you gonna go look it up right away.
I need to play clubworld, i need the bouncer, i need the first tekken tag, and wwf smackdown (thats the name right). Oh yea and midnight club...oh yea
@Flaming_Kaiser I can't spend another console, after Wii U, Ps4 and 3ds, unfortunately. So this is my best chance too play Persona 4.
I would love it if The Warriors, Timesplitters and Star Wars revenge of the sith were put on the store. Very doubtful any of them would be picked though unfortunately...
I am kinda mixed on this. On the one hand this is great news on the other hand, how many games will be available? It's will be one thing if we could use the PS2 discs like the Xbox One does with 360 games but it we have to but them digitally, a few things worry me.
1) Price how much will each game be
2) This is the big one, Third party games and licensing issues. As @get2sammyb brought up games that use licensed music like the Tony Hawk games and GTA games for example. I assume they would have to make new deals with the artists and products. What about companies that have since went out of business like THQ? Would we see games like the Smackdown VS Raw series come to the PS4?
Yeah after dealing with a similar promise made by Nintendo with the Wii U's VC I am a bit weary. While I have no doubt that the first party games won't be a problem it's the third party games that I want to hear about.
Dark Cloud is amazing and all, but I still REALLY want to play Magic Pengel. I don't know why, but I have always wanted to play it and never had the opportunity before, partly due to it's obscurity.
C'mon Sony, pleeeease?
@Krinkle_Kaptain I never played the bouncer due to the terrible reviews and as it was out early on in the ps2 lifetime, I had a GameCube. What's it like?
@Unashamed_116 yes what a game, future perfect was an underrated gem. Would love a showdown in the hangar as Viola the jester against the gingerbread man using tommy guns again. Make it happen Sony!!
@xMEADx On the vita store ps1 games are comparatively cheap. £7.99 for final fantasy is the dearest. I only paid £4 for ridge racer type 4 - arguably the best in the series. So there's hope yet. Driver is £1.90 I think.
I'm goin berserk as soon as the games drop.
I have $500 right here to spend with you on a PS2 library Sony. Make it happen
Dark Cloud 1&2, Silent Hill 2&3! That would make my life.
Recently bought Suikoden III, Persona 3 and 4, SMT: Nocturne as PS2 Classics on PS3. Those are pretty good value at 9.99 digital. I probably wouldn't buy a PS4 until there's more ability to transfer those, plus PSN and PS1 games to it. My crappy broken PSP can play the PS1 games, so I think they can figure it out!
i would really like it if i can put my harry potter 2 disc or shadow of the colossus disc into my ps4, sit down with my dualshock 4, and play. it doesn't make any sense money wise, but if sony did make it disc-based backward compatible, a lot of people would be very happy
but no, i dont expect them to.
@Frank90 Persona 4 IS available already on the PS Vita.
@skaarj217 yeah, but Vita is not available to me! hahhahaha
