Okay, so if you didn't already know, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Siege is getting a year's worth of free downloadable content. Maps, new characters, and so on will be released bit by bit over the next 12 months - and that's pretty cool. Ubisoft's tying a season pass into the equation, though, which complicates things ever so slightly.
Unlike what we'd usually expect from a season pass, this one doesn't offer any kind of extensive content packs or expansions. At most, in terms of additional content, it'll throw a few weapon skins at you. However, players who do purchase the pass will have an advantage in that they'll be able to earn renown more easily.
Renown is essentially experience, allowing you to unlock guns and playable operators as you rank up. Nabbing the season pass gives you a 'permanent boost' to the amount that you receive, and also gives you access to extra daily challenges, allowing you to grind for renown more efficiently.
What's more, season pass holders get to play as the aforementioned DLC characters a week before everyone else - and they don't have to manually unlock them.
We're not sure how to feel about this. On the one hand, season passes can offer good value when you're being provided with big expansions, for example, but on the other, many season passes are simply stuffed with meaningless crap. Rainbow Six: Siege doesn't seem to provide either - it's almost like the sort of bonuses that you'd expect when buying your way into a free-to-play title.

Hahaha! Oh Ubisoft, you never learn, do you?
Paging @Anchorsam_9!
Yeah not a fan of that approach. For me it's about respecting time and by effectively buying your way with such a mechanic I don't think this does that.
@get2sammyb Its like Ubisoft have discovered that people actually like Rainbow Six Siege and are slowly trying to annoy all of them. Micro transactions and season passes are one thing, but combining both of them?
So it's a lump sum microtransaction / pay to advance pass. Huh. I really hope people don't support this.
@Anchorsam_9 It's also the worst season pass in existence.
You know the games industry is getting worse when developers promote season passes to a game more than the actual game itself....
Sounds a bit like Turn 10s vip membership for forza.
Sounds lame to me, but then I'm not much interested in the game in general.
Makes it easier to skip this one.
So they want us to buy the season pass and then stump up some more cash when the next map pack is out, I may genuinely not buy this game now and it was 100% on my list, with so many other game's out I really can afford to miss this one.
Laughable.
It seems to me they planned to release half a game at full price, heard some backlash, realised it wasn't what people expect for a full-price supposedly AAA game, then decided they better offer more - hence the year of free ahem "extra content" to follow. Sounds like they felt a need to buy time to pad it out and justify the price.
When they announced it, it was a 100% buy for me. That all but disappeared with the revelation that there's no single-player. All this extra BS just confirms that it's off my list.
