We're afraid that it's yet more disappointing news for Street Fighter V, as its opening Japanese sales figures are in. We already know that the brawler hasn't done especially well here in the UK, and it turns out that it hasn't quite set Japan alight, either. Capcom's latest sold through 41,990 copies on PlayStation 4, which isn't terrible, but you'd expect a bigger splash from such an anticipated release.
The console exclusive was actually beaten out by Attack on Titan, which launched on PS4, PS3, and Vita. Omega Force's adaptation sold best on Sony's handheld, but the new-gen version only shifted around 1000 less copies. Other than that, the software charts remained somewhat standard, with Dragon Quest Builders and Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 sticking around the top 20.
Meanwhile, on the hardware side of things, PS4 and Vita numbers both enjoyed a small boost, but that's to be expected with the arrival of several new titles.

Everybody was pointing and laughing at Rise of the Tomb Raider's sales on Xbox One. This is looking like a bigger disaster. Lots of factors playing into what's going on but I still expected, despite all the launch problems, that SF would be doing better than this just based on name. I think people have just had enough of Capcom.
What did they expect by releasing an unfinished game?
@Tasuki
DriveClub wasn't exactly filled to the brim upon its release either but it still sold fairly well. I think maybe people are getting a little more cautious with how they spend their money but I also think it goes deeper than that. When a company has as poor a recent history as Capcom, it's tough to rebound from it, and then when said company is still doing things that don't make much sense, it compounds the problem
@JoeBlogs
Agreed. The fact we're seeing talk in the last week about an arcade mode as a possibility shows me that Capcom is at least listening. It's just a shame it took pleading from consumers for it to happen. Something like that is so very basic it's beyond belief it wasn't in there. If this were a free-to-play or $30 early access game, I could understand some of the decision making but for $60 more content needed to be in there, period.
@Gamer83 This is Japan though. Can you already say it's a bigger disaster? I mean critically this game bombed but sales wise we still don't know. I,m not defending anything because i will never buy a fighting game. To repetitive
@Sanquine
We'll see what happens when the North America numbers roll in. I'm not sure this is going to end up being worth the money Sony spent for it though.
Playstation on top of Nintendo in both hardware and software in the homeland. Nintendo has to be panicking behind close doors right now.
Evo 2016 is when we'll no doubt see the biggest push for SFV - that'll be front and centre of Capcom's plan for the rest of this year, I imagine.
However, while I have little doubt that there'll be a lot of hype surrounding SFV come tournament time, it's disappointing to see so much negativity surround what should have been a smash hit.
@JoeBlogs
Hopefully Capcom does feel the kick up the arse and they realize that they need to approach launches and initial game content much better.
Knowing Capcom though, they will probably take this as a sign that the fighting game genre is drying up,.......which, given the sales of Mortal Kombat X, is in no way true.
@ShogunRok
But.....the good majority of people who buy fighting games don't really care about EVO and the pro scene. Yes, that scene keeps a game relevant for years to come......but what Capcom needs to do is appeal to the casual fighting game audience (like me!). I've bought MKX, SFV, DOA5, and Guilty Gear Xrd for the PS4.....and I could care less about the pro side of things, I just want a fun fighting game with good characters and gameplay. Capcom should just launch a second marketing blitz around June when the story mode and what not is added.
The pro / tournament side of things is an important segment, but it's not everything, thats why people are so pissed here.
This rationale that fighting games need to be highly geared towards for the uber pro / tournament side of things (at the expense of the more casual audience) needs to stop. MKX did it right, and I don't even really even care for Mortal Kombat from a gameplay or aesthetic angle.
@sub12 Well yeah, but I'm just talking about how the game's perceived rather than how it's actually doing commercially. The ongoing backlash regarding things like arcade mode are enough to make you realise that people aren't happy, and that there's a chance the game would have performed better had it been better received by a wider audience.
Street Fighter will only get better and better. They said they're not releasing a super/ultra whatever edition so this is the one that'll last.
Now can someone please localize Kantai Collection already : p
1.[PSV] Kan Colle Kai (Kadokawa Games, 02/18/16) – 140,757 (New)
What the hell is this and why has no one mentioned it so far? 140k on vita. Holy Megacash Batman.
I don't get this narrative that SFV hasn't sold well, it came 2nd in the UK where that chart is chock a block with multiplatform games. Did people seriously expect it to outsell Black Ops 3? And we don't know how well it's sold on PSN, it just smacks of "let's give the game more negative press"
@adf86
Maybe Capcom should be a bit pro-active in combating the bad press vice just releasing statements on server maintenance and ignoring pretty much everything else.
I don't know I think that in the long run SFV will sell a lot. Just because the game will be getting better and better. I'll buy next month or in April, I don't know yet.
Good.
This sends a message loud and clear. I'm proud of my fellow gamers for finally standing up to this kind of nonsense.
@XCWarrior I doubt Nintendo are worried. Most people are probably waiting for the Nintendo NX and which system the new Zelda will be on.
xbox one 162 consoles sold lol.
I don't know... I feel Capcom trying to appeal to casuals is one thing that'll come back to bite them... And trying to force the game out to have it ready for the new Capcom Pro Tour season is another bad move.... It shipped with little content and server problems to boot. I also think constantly being connected to servers kills the experience when servers can't handle the load. That said , I still really like SFV, but I still put it behind Third Strike and Ultra SFIV. Combos come to easy for veterans and the v-skills feel like some are forced as some aren't very good or as effective as it could be, leaving SFV feeling a little stale .... That said I still really like the game. The core fighting mechanics are still Street Fighter, it's just not as satisfying landing combos like it was in SFIV or SF3 . The "casuals" that Capcom is targeting really don't care about learning combos and will only mash buttons.... Once they get rekt and styled on by online warriors they'll quickly leave the game, I feel ... And the hardcore crowd will be left with a slightly watered down experience ... That's what I feel anyway
Rant over
I don't honestly think the lack of features fuelled this supposed underperformance in sales, as I don't believe many people know. I feel the retail price for a fighting game is what is putting people off. Plus, I don't think these games are in vogue anymore. Black Ops is doing well because that is what the mainstream audience buys. These guys don't usually post on specialist gaming websites. Sure the game is great and I will buy it down the line with a price drop and a content boost.
The reason is simple, it is somehow lacking content that will arrive soon and boost sales. We have to wait before saying SFV is not a successful game. I'm sure that it will have good numbers in one year.
@ShoryukenKid Actually, pros have been praising the game for the focus on its neutral game and simple play style. The majority of them, anyway. Also, old school pros seem to have been coming back in to the scene because it reminds them of the other classic SF titles. Combos were always there in Street Fighter, but SF4 took them to a whole new level, which wasn't really the norm.
SFIV was a good game, and I enjoyed it a lot, but it was way too vortex heavy (assuming you know what this means.) I like V better for the simple fact that it's not riddled with option selects, not yet at least.
Third Strike was fun though; a classic game. I can't wait for Alex to get in.
Here's a thought, maybe capcom should put a good sum of original thoughts into a new street fighter game instead of rehashing the same damn characters over and over again. I mean honestly, stop it. O.O
@Excep7ional I get what you're saying , and like I said , I do like SFV (been playing nonstop it's just when compared to older Street Fighters , combos don't feel like they are hard to do... I'm not talking about 40+ hit combos , I'm just saying the timing is very lenient compare to say Third Strike (yes a classic and my fave SF In third Strike you earned your combos and I guess the work I had to put in a game like Third Strike was very satisfying to my anyway when I finally nailed a certain combo I saw pros doing. To me SFV is simplified and while still very fun, I just don't get that feeling like I did in Third Strike . I guess being simplified was Capcoms goal though and they achieved it by still creating a deep fighter without the one frame links SFIV and Third Strike were known for.
@ShoryukenKid I understand what you're saying completely. I spent hours upon hours in the training room practicing my 1 frame links, I did those without plinking (a technique pretty much everyone used to make the combos easier). 3rd strike was the same
for me. People didn't believe me when I told them I played on a d-pad instead of an arcade stick, lol. I admit, seeing all of that pay off was very satisfying. I'm not saying I don't miss that, but I'm glad with the direction SFV is taking.
The combos may not be tough to pull off anymore, but the matter of getting to pull those combos off in a match where you could get punished super hard (thanks to the crush counter mechanic) in the first place, is equally satisfying to me. That's just my opinion though, but I can understand how you feel. Anyway, add me. My ID is FidoChinx on PS4. We could run some casual matches sometime, if you want.
@bigdoggy Do you mean new moves for the characters or just new characters completely?
@Excep7ional all new characters. This would also mean new moves as well. Sorry but im sick of the same old characters every single time with prettier graphics, la de da. Ever since Street fighter came out. Honestly i can't take it anymore.
@Bigdoggy Lol that would certainly be interesting. Although last time Capcom did that (Street Fighter III) things went South so hard. For the most part, people would love to have their favorite characters in Street Fighter. The characters are Iconic and nobody would want to see all of the excluded like that. 4 or 5 new characters each installment would be enough, in my opinion. However, A new fighting game from Capcom would be a much better bet, period. That way, they wouldn't have to piss a lot of people off by by removing characters and leaving SF alone, and giving everyone else who wants something new a breath of fresh air. When it comes to fighting games, people know Capcom would do a good job, gameplay wise, so it would pretty much work out for everyone.
@Excep7ional i thought street fighter 3 still had ken, ryu, blanka. I rhough vega was the only one missing. I mean they still do the exact same moves as they did years ago. There is nothing fresh about the game.
Of course they would do a good job gameplay wise, its the exact same moves.
@Bigdoggy Ryu, Ken, Chun Li and Akuma were still there, but other than those 4 the cast was completely new and different. It was like they were guest characters in a completely new series. Blanka, Vega, Bison, Balrog, Cammy, and the rest of the Street Fighter 2 characters weren't in the game.
And I was talking about the hypothetical new game they make, would be good, not Street Fighter. Don't know what to tell you about the moves though. Pretty much every fighting game has characters that keep their signature moves throughout every new game; what makes fighting games new and fresh would be the different mechanics they add to whole system, for example: Focus attack in SF4, V trigger in SF5, and the new specials in Tekken 7.
