Wow, did you see that new Final Fantasy XV gameplay? If you didn't, I suggest that you go ahead and give it a watch through here, otherwise this particular soapbox won't hold much weight. Doesn't look too shabby, does it? Even editor Sammy Barker seems reasonably impressed by it, and we all know that he usually hates anything that doesn't feature cheap pop music.
I have to say, though, that I'm not of the mindset that Final Fantasy XV's newest gameplay clip makes it look like the best game ever made – far from it, in fact. The fresh footage still looks unfinished – which makes sense, seeing as it's taken from last year's build – and there are elements of it that don't look great. The implementation of stealth, for example, is something that I'm pretty sure no one asked for in their Final Fantasy title, and the indoors environment looks like a big empty warehouse that gets used for conventions – except there are no conventions, only robots. It's certainly not the best level design I've ever seen, put it that way.
I'm not convinced that it'll be Game of the Year 2016 based on what we've seen, then, but there's no escaping the fact that I'm reasonably excited for Final Fantasy XV again. Why? Because for the first time in about a decade, it looks like a real game – a tangible, playable, realised game. Not CG concept footage, not a wonky demo that comes with Final Fantasy Type-0 HD, but an actual game that looks like it might release this year.
Okay, so "it actually looks like a game" generally isn't the best reason to get excited, but you have to understand that I've been following Final Fantasy XV for all of my adult life. Aside from being a horrible realisation, that truth nugget allows me to find a strange appreciation in that the journey is almost over. Or maybe it's relief. Either way, I'm sure that a lot of you reading this are in the exact same spot.
I think to some extent, I'm just happy that we'll all be able to move on once this bloody game releases. To put this into context, I'd like to share some official Push Square statistics with you lot. Back on the 16th April 2009, Sammy wrote this site's first ever story on a certain title called Final Fantasy Versus XIII. We went on to write 34 more articles about Final Fantasy Versus XIII over the course of four years. After that, the project was renamed Final Fantasy XV, and to date, we've written a staggering 95 articles about it. In total, that means we've penned 130 articles based upon Square Enix's upcoming game, and that's ridiculous.
In a way, it feels weird to be writing this very Soapbox. A few years ago I was fairly convinced that, as it was called back then, Versus XIII would never see the light of day. I suppose I was right to some degree, but to think that we're getting a new mainline Final Fantasy title at some point within the next 11 months conjures an old kind of excitement – the same excitement that I last felt when I was anxiously waiting for Final Fantasy XII to launch in Europe.
At this point, I just hope that the game lives up to its now legendary name, because if it doesn't, we'll probably still be reading and writing articles about it well into 2017, only this time, they'll describe how Final Fantasy XV was one of the the biggest flops in gaming history. That's a glimpse into a potentially grim future, but right now, I'm somewhat enthusiastic about Noctis and the gang's adventure for the first time in what seems like an eternity, and that's something worthy of mild celebration.
Are you excited for Final Fantasy XV, or are you weary of these immaculately dressed pretty boys? Tell us all about how you've changed over the last ten years in the comments section below.

i remember back in 2006 when i first saw the trailer, I WAS BLOWN AWAY... shiny graphics even by today standards, awesome costume design, one the best character designs i ever saw and dark atmosphere oh boy that was EPIC.
the game made so many changes through the years but i still believe it will be a great game, not that epic thing i saw back in 2006 but still it has so many potentials that can help it to become one the best games in 2016.
who the heck is sammy baker ?
I'm honestly glad it's getting completed. I remember when the whole "Fabula Nova Chrystalis" stuff was a thing. Instead we got what is probably the most unwanted trilogy ever. But I'm glad XV is coming around. Even if it's not a holy grail, at least it didn't stay on the cutting room floor.
Now, about that Kingdom Hearts III........
Have to say my hype is SLOWLY starting to come back for this one, and maybe Square can lure me back into this heir clutches. (Once upon a time they were my favorite developer, now they are an afterthought) I still can't get myself to pre-order this heir his though, I will definitely need to see some review scores first, unless they drop more footage and demos that just absolutely blow me away. I hope entry think the general is even better now than what was shown in this video, as that came from an derived build. crosses fingers
@eliotgballade To be fair, Sammy didn't even notice that when he proofed the article.
@ShogunRok : shocking ... I'm never going on pushSquare again .
I didn't like the trailer at all, too dark, couldn't see a thing, and metal hand rails on concrete stairs is not my idea of a FF setting. But the article already conveyed that the trailer wasn't all that great so no point dwelling.
My favorite trailer so far is the marlbro. Marlboro have always been my FF nemesis w/ that stupid multiple affliction attack. I knew I had to have the game when I saw it in all it's HD glory.

Though to be honest I think I knew when I saw the first screen shot of leviathan, one of my favorite summons.
Still dont have much faith in characterization or plotting, but all the new stuff shown off does look mighty good.
I don't find any issue at all with the stealth system. Why not have it there? That just give the game even more depth, which I like having in my games! I'm pretty stoked for this game after seeing the footage!
@rjejr it was dark on my phone but looked fine on TV and laptop. Try another screen? And I'm pretty sure there were concrete stairs and metal handrails in other FF games
@kyleforrester87 I only watched it on my PC desktop and the only part that wasn't dark was about half way thru when a spotlight came on.
And I don't mind the concrete and steel, I really enjoyed FF 8, played it all the way thru twice back to back, but I've liked every other FFXV trailer better than this one. I enjoy the road trip "this can't be happening" vibe. And the chocobos. It's hardly an FF trailer w/o chocobo. And they have the best music

Though I could do w/o the fishing.
@rjejr yeah I do get what you are saying, still as I said on another thread it's kinda nice to see a new environment - the variety seems cool.
I'd play FF IX over this I think... The characters leave much to be desired.
@BodyW-outOrgans I was thinking about that today though and really these guys look no worse (perhaps even better) than the crew in the FF7 remake, but we know those guys so we are happier to buy into their look. Maybe we should get to know the FF15 guys before we make up our minds!
(I often spend my time thinking about handsome men with floppy hair)
I thought it looked fantastic. A proper and fitting RPG worthy of following my beloved Xenoblade X, and it very well may surpass it.
@BodyW-outOrgans
I actually quite like the clothes Noctis' wearing in this pic.
My least favorite group of characters in terms of looks would probably have to be the ones from Final Fantasy X, though.
pretty hot!!
bwaha! (^. ^ )/
@kyleforrester87
What about this lot?
@WanderingBullet
so, yeah, I'm excited about FFXV, and think Ignis is the greatest ever...
but I'm not going to lie. I would be 100000x more excited about XV if the picture above was the game we were going to get.
I'm really excited for this, I can't lie. The demo that game with Type-0 really sold me on it. I love the group of dudes on a road trip(bro trip?) across the continent kind of thing it has going on. I'll definitely be picking this up when it comes out.
@Utena-mobile
Both Noctis and Prompto could probably look like their female counterparts if they wore hair extensions and had make-up on.
Looks amazing, definitely buying it at launch. I hope the collectors edition comes with a Noctis Statue, would look great along with my other ones.
It looks really good especially the combat & by the time it release we would have seen a lot more of the world.
@WanderingBullet man you don't like Rikku, Wakka and Kimari? You have no soul.
Auron is easily my favourite support character in a ff game. Go back and play it. (yuna and tidus are terrible that I agree with)
@WanderingBullet lol, somehow they look more manly than the boys. I'm with you though, FFX's characters are the least appealing of the lot, in terms of aesthetics, but they still aren't that bad imo. And of course, FF13 takes the award for worst FF cast ever.
@themcnoisy Nothing against the characters, I was referring to how they looked aesthetically. lol
@kyleforrester87 Only played a few FF games myself but I do agree about the characters in FFXIII being the worst amongst the ones I've played. I do however like the character designs for both Lightning and Fang, though. The character design for Hope Estheim when he's older actually looks better compared to when he was young in FFXIII.
@WanderingBullet yeah 13's designs weren't too bad at all apart from perhaps Snow
@kyleforrester87 yeah... idk.. I respect other people's taste, I think my issue is that I have always preferred the "fantasy" side of FF - and not the way they took things starting with VIII, where the characters just look like stylish Japanese people.
@BodyW-outOrgans yeah I agree, by far the best characters as far as I'm concerned are FF9's. It was pretty brave to give the main character a tail and I'm sure it turned a lot of people off the game. Then there's your standard Knight but they gave him rusty armour. Then some dude with massive red dread locks, a big rat, little black dude..an interesting main cast to say the least. Then lots of big hippo NPCs walking amongst humans. Random as hell but loved it.
@kyleforrester87 I LOVE that game and the characters. So outside of the box... True story: I had never played FF IX until within the last year - and I started with FFII on SNES. Needless to say, it is my favorite after FFII (IV). If only all the FF games could be ported on to ps4. I see no reason why this doesn't happen - I feel like its money left on the table, as people would buy the games, and I wouldn't think it would take a whole lot of effort to make happen.
@BodyW-outOrgans a "HD" version of FF9 is coming to PC and Smartphones, not yet announced for PS4 but I suspect it's likely given FF7 being ported over. Of course this only really gives us higher res character models and other 3D assets and enhanced framerate. I say "only", I find the enhancements to be pretty sweet. But I doubt there will ever be a full blown remake of 8 or 9.
There are a bunch of JRPGs that feature mostly female characters. Let us womenfolk have this one. And I don't think they look very girly at all. I see girlier men all the time in Tokyo. Yeah you know, it's a Japanese game. And the character designer is also Japanese. "WUUAAAAT??!" leljk Hardly anyone should be surprised here. Unlike the west Japanese people don't shy away from pretty men. If you want all the chicks this is what you'll have to look like. I wish I was kidding. Either way, it's a game. So the creators can do whatever they want. I don't have to see the same brown haired "every man" boring slightly un-shaved shmuck again so I'm happy.
@Riririn I don't mind the all dude line up at all, and I don't mind how they look either. But they do look pretty damn girly.
@kyleforrester87 Yeah, I don't care about remakes so much as just being able to play the originals on my ps4. My guess is that it would look pretty awesome - the art design on FFIX is beautiful!
@Riririn I'm feel the same way with @kyleforrester87 but I think its only both Noctis and Prompto that looks girly out of the four.
But to me its not really an issue since Final Fantasy has had androgynous looking characters in their previous games as well.
