Its details may be shrouded in secrecy, but Sony wants you to test the next PlayStation 4 firmware update. "Starting today you can sign up to be a beta tester and get a sneak peek at some of the features making their way to your PS4," wrote marketing boffin John Koller on the PlayStation Blog. Exciting, eh?
The beta program will begin in early March, and you can register your interest in taking part through here if you're in North America and through here if you're in Europe. Don't worry about bugs and stuff – you'll be able to roll back to the previous system software at any time if things go a bit gaga. Nifty, huh?
As alluded, there's no word on what features the stress test will include, but here's hoping for folders, online notifications, and name changes. We'll update you with the full patch list when details inevitably leak. In the meantime, let us know what you're hoping to see added in the comments section below.

Hoping for a big one here.
Hoping they add a feature, that tells your playtime of games. Would love to know mine.
I was in the Beta for the last big update and so wonder if I need to register again for this one.
My big hope is that they offer external HDD support for storage. My internal is already full and I do find its affecting my decision to buy or even try some of the PS+ IGC games. I don't really want the hassle of buying a new internal - these seem more expensive for less storage capacity and you need to reinstall the OS, reinstall all games, patches, digital content etc too. - that's nearly 500gb in my case. Plugging in an external HDD and just moving all my games across (or just installing new games to it) is so much easier.
@BAMozzy Yeah external hard drive support would be great.
I'd also like to see folders, or failing that, at least the ability to pin favourite games/apps to the left of the bar. Notifications for when friends log on would also be pretty handy.
When you update your internal drive I thought you could back up everything to an external drive including all your games then just reinstall it all.
The only new feature I would be after is the ability to either appear offline or show that you are busy etc
@BAMozzy @Quintumply I too hope that we'll get external hard drive support someday. That and also friends log on notifications.
I really have no complaints with the PS4 menus, they're fast, easy to navigate and work hell-of-a-lot better than the PS3 menus.
Well. I kinda wish you could mix and match themes by using music from one and artwork from another.
I would like the ability to be able to stop updates automatically downloading for games that I've already finished with but don't necessarily want to delete from my hard drive (as I may go back to them at some point).
As it stands if I "delete" the update (the only option available I think?), then it deletes the whole game install. I just want to stop the download...
Please make it happen Sony...
@Expa0 Agreed. The PS4 menus are lovely to navigate. makes going back to PS3 feel a bit like pulling teeth!
@dodoo I thought you could turn off automatic updates for games
@dryrain Yeah you can.
I'm happy for auto updates to download on games I'm still playing/yet to play. I just want to be able to stop them for games I've finished with that's all. At the moment deleting the update deletes the whole install...
Something to tidy up the homescreen, its ok but looks a bit of a mess. Some way to organise games apps etc alphabetically within folders? Ps3 could use this too! External hdd support is a must really.....not quite related but meh they could do with improving the ps store for the ps3/vita, they are diabolical slow, always have been since birth and constantly drop out for whatever reason - its not my broadband either as the ps4 store seems to have none of these issues!
I hope it's the ps4 to pc/Mac streaming capability that shuh tweeted about
Friends come online notifications!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!
I get quite a lot of notifications as it is, who's joining chat etc. So I really hope Sony doesn't add friend notifications that popping up with other notifications would be a nightmare, it doesn't take 2 seconds to see who's online anyway. But I'm looking forwards to what Sony does add, as long as it's not friend notifications.
Edit: Totally agree external HDD support is a must, I hope Sony adds it.
I've registered my interest so let's see if anything comes of it
Searchable communities would be a plus in my book...that is, if Sony wants anyone to truly utilize that feature.
Hopefully a way to pin my favourite games where I want on the bar and I would be quite satisfied. Folders mean I have to press X an extra time haha.
I don't want name changes. Why not stick with the name you created?
@iSillyBoiJudas because some people made there accounts years ago when they were young and stupid
I have a lot of hope in this update for some reason
