Fallout 4's incoming survival mode is sounding more and more like a rather drastic gameplay overhaul as opposed to a new difficulty setting. Currently being beta tested on PC, the new mode makes living in the wasteland a much more realistic and brutal experience, and Bethesda's gone ahead and detailed everything that you can expect.
Survival mode promises tough new choices for starters. Because you can only save your game after sleeping in a bed, you'll need to weigh up your options as you explore the Commonwealth. If you're missing a chunk of health and there's a party of Super Mutants up ahead, you'll probably want to avoid combat. Likewise, you'll need to carefully consider your loadout since ammo now has weight, and you'll also have to think about hoarding food and other necessities so that you don't expire.
What's more, fast travelling is disabled during survival mode, which means that you'll have to plan your journeys across the wilderness. Meanwhile, combat is much more deadly for both you and your opponents, as damage has been increased across the board. The developer hopes that this'll make encounters more tactical affairs that force you to use your head when the going gets tough.
Top all of this off with new illnesses, medicines, less effective companions, and even a new perk that sees you build up adrenaline during combat, and you've got an interesting new way to play Fallout 4. If you want to pick apart every detail, be sure to click through here and check out Bethesda's official blog post on the matter.

This sounds like what I always imagine Fallout should be. It gets boring swiftly when you hit a god-like status in the wasteland. Combat is just a chore and I have enough ammo to kill everyone 30 times over. This is going to be a great challenge.
How is damage output gonna handled i wonder.
Gonna look through the link for that.
Damage taken and received gone up.
All is well
This is what I've been waiting to start a brand new playthrough for. Sneaking around to avoid some of the nastier enemies will add to the suspense of it all. Can't wait.
I really liked the idea of this in Fallout New Vegas. However after a short while it just got annoying. Still managed to soldier through to the end though.
Yes! That's what I'm talking about. Only commented earlier today on the other Fallout article asking about details regarding Survival mode. Thanks Pushsquare!
I'm waiting for this to see the two endings I'm missing! Hope we don't have to wait for the next dlc to see it coming!
Sounds like a great update, the lack of fast travel and wonky saving system sucks though, it outta give new trophies for completing the game in survival mode too.
@BenTarrant I've seriously got to put more points into Scrounger. I've got enough ammo for the weapons I barely use, and never enough for any weapon I have that's actually powerful (my gauss rifle comes to mind). Heck, I'm playing on Hard and I don't remember the last time I found a weapon that was worth picking up. I only have a few points into any of the crafting-related perks so I can barely add a clip to my weapons. I decided to max out Luck so I've been putting most of my points into that tree. My crits are insane. Hahaha.
But yeah, I seriously need to find some damned weapons that are better than the Overseer's Guardian I picked up like twenty levels ago.
This mode scares the hell out of me, despite it being far truer to what I think Fallout should be. I'm so spoiled playing on hard and only dying when I seriously effed up (usually by forgetting I'm not invincible or not checking for mines).
In FO3/NV/4, I don't even bother with food, so this would be a nice touch. The only saving while sleeping in a BED (not even a sleeping bag) thing scares me, as I hate losing hours of play, but it also really ups the stakes which is nice.
My only real complaint is lack of fast travel. It seems like every new quest I pick up is a forty minute run to the other side of the map, through Raider and Super Mutant territories. I'd be afraid to go more than fifteen minutes travel away from Cabot House. Hahaha
Sounds 'Similar' to Rise of the Tomb Raiders survivalist mode...
I'll start a new save to give it a go, the perk system seemed largely redundant on my main save as after a while I was too powerful anyway. This will make some of the perks at least much more valuable. One thing is certain, with the no fast travelling I won't be bothering to build the settlements in this mode and subsequently won't have to bother with all the junk
@stevie85
I've never tried this, but I feel like I would come to your conclusion based on the details above, interesting for a short while, annoying afterwards.
I've been playing on survival mode since day one and the health recovery rate after eating or stimpacks is brutally slow and with legendary enemies absorbing bullets it's pretty tough at times. This is gonna be a real challenge, only the lack of fast travel will probably get on my nerves, sometimes you just need to use it. Leave the companions at home, they find trouble for you at the worst possible moments
Wish this was an option when it released, would have definitely went this route. As it stands now I mow through the wasteland on the hardest setting with ease, never needing VATS or power armor. The added weight to the ammo is really crucial IMO. Not bothered by the no fast travel option as I don't fast travel anyways. Even after all this not sure it will be enough to drag me back, after more than 200 hours I am thoroughly burnt, probably only far harbor will bring me back in.
@A1RB4G I always choose the Lone Wanderer perk for that very reason.
Sounds perfect. I was really hoping for such a mode after New Vegas. Game save #2 will be hardcore
Looking forward to this.
